[001] - amforth 1.0
by Matthias Trute (http://freshmeat.net/users/mtrute/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 02:29
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
About: amforth is a distribution of Forth running on the AVR ATmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It is ans94 Forth oriented with some
minor exclusions and a few words from the extension word sets. It is
written in assembly language and Forth itself. The main development uses
ATmega8 and ATmega32 controllers; other ATmega controllers should work
with small adjustments.
Changes: This release adds new words (['], user) and support for the
ATmega169 used in the AVR butterfly.

[007] - Crossroads Load Balancer 1.23
by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 02:25
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
About: Crossroads is a load balance and failover utility for TCP-based
services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and features
extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup calls",
highly configurable dispatch modes of client requests to back ends,
detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend calls
fail, support for "sticky" HTTP sessions, and more. It is
service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, DNS, MySQL, etc.
Changes: ACLs (allow/deny lists based on client IP address) were tested,
and there is a new hook for an external dispatch helper ("dispatchmode
externalhandler") for cases where Crossroads' internal dispatch methods
aren't sufficient. A new "username" directive can be used to set the
effective UID when calling external helpers. Some code was cleaned up, and
the documentation was expanded.

Communications :: Chat
Internet
About: ctrlproxy is an IRC server with multiserver support. It runs as a
daemon and connects to a number of IRC servers, then allows you to connect
from a workstation and work as the user that is logged in to the IRC
server. After you disconnect, it maintains the connection to the server.
It acts like any normal IRC server, so you can use any IRC client to
connect to it. It supports multiple client connections to one IRC server
(under the same nick), allowing you to connect to IRC using your IRC nick,
even while you have an IRC session open somewhere else. It supports logging
(in any user-specified format), password authentication, and CTCP (in case
no clients are connected). IRC servers can be contacted over IPv6 and/or
using SSL. Automatic identification with NickServ is supported, as well as
various types of backlog.
Changes: Several minor crash bugs have been fixed. Support for older
versions of GLib has been added. More data is cached now, which avoids
excess flood messages from the server in extreme situations. The
documentation has been updated.

Multimedia :: Video :: Display
About: FlowPlayer is a video player for Flash Video in FLV format. The UI
is clean and simple. The player is easy to configure and embed into your
home page, site, or blog. The player supports progressive download with
HTTP and also streaming with Flash Media Server and Red5.
Changes: The volume slider has been changed to adjust the volume while the
slider is being moved. The previous version adjusted it only after the
mouse button was released. This release resets the play/pause button
correctly when the clip ends and looping is not used. Looping does not go
to the splash after the last clip in the playlist is finished. Instead,
the playback loops to the first clip after the splash. This is valid also
when only one video is configured to be played using the 'videoFile'
config option.

Education :: Testing
About: Kanatest is a Japanese kana (hiragana and katakana) simple
flashcard tool. It offers fourteen lessons and three drill modes:
hiragana, katakana, and mixed mode. The tool displays randomly selected
kana characters (respecting mode and lesson) and waits for the user answer
(expected as the romaji equivalent). This process continues until all
questions are answered or all questions are answered correctly (depending
on options). At the end of test, information about drilling time and
correctness ratio is displayed. The results are stored, and a user can
review his performance at any time.
Changes: The main change is to use fonts instead of images for kana
characters. The other new features are a built-in kana chart, powerful
statistics, enhanced options, and more.

Education :: Testing
About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.
Changes: Users can now delete and rename internal mail folders. Additional
access control features for portfolio files are available. Users can reset
their own password if it is maintained within LON-CAPA (rather than, for
example, Kerberos). Storage quota can be set on different levels. "\OR"
(multiple correct answers in different formats for numericalresponse and
formularesponse questions) is supported. The German translation has been
updated. All transactions which change due dates and number of points and
documents included in the course are logged, and the complete history can
be displayed.

by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 07:12
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: Pantheios is a C/C++ logging API library. It offers an optimal
combination of complete type-safety, efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (platform
and compiler independent), and it upholds the C tradition of only paying
for what you use. Pantheios supports logging of message statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogenous types. Pantheios supports
filtering of log messages based on severity level.
Changes: A missing implicit link header for be.file was added. A time
formatting error on Win32 was fixed. This requires the latest STLSoft beta
from http://stlsoft.org/downloads.html.

by CJ Niemira (http://freshmeat.net/users/cniemira/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 10:56
About: phpMyID is a small, fairly lightweight, standalone, single-user
Identity Provider for OpenID authentication. It comprises a single PHP
script that can be used by one individual to run their own personal OpenID
"IdP." The program requires no external libraries, and has very minimal
requirements. It should run on almost any server that runs PHP 4 or 5. It
requires no database, and does not access the file system beyond session
handling.
Changes: Bugs related to PHP "safe mode" altering the authentication
realm, debug logging, and immediate mode have been addressed. Config files
can now be decoupled from the main script.

[034] - Seed7 2007-01-04
by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 14:23
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.
Changes: The hash type was changed to maintain the size of the hash
instead of computing it. The &:= statement for the type ref_list was
added. The compiler was improved to support 'in var' parameters. A new
include file (complex.s7i) to support complex numbers was added. Support
for the bigIConv, bigOrd, cmdMkdir, drwPArc, drwPCircle, drwPFEllipse,
filBigLng, filBigSeek, and filBigTell functions was added to the compiler.

[035] - Shed Skin 0.0.17
by srepmub (http://freshmeat.net/users/srepmub/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 07:19
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Shed Skin is an experimental Python-to-C++ compiler. It accepts
pure but implicitly statically typed Python programs and generates
optimized C++ code. This means that in combination with a C++ compiler, it
allows for translation of pure Python programs into highly efficient
machine language. For a set of 16 non-trivial test programs, measurements
show a typical speedup of 2-40 over Psyco, about 12 on average, and 2-220
over CPython, about 45 on average. Shed Skin also outputs annotated source
code.
Changes: Assignment lists ([[a,b],[c,d]] = matrix) are supported. "_" was
made into a special assignment target (so it can be dynamically
overloaded). Support for the "__name__" attribute of modules was added.
Exception handling was improved. The limit on tuple/list unpacking was
removed. Printing of floats was improved.

[042] - WidgetServer 1.2
by Dirk von der Weiden (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvdw/)
Thu, Jan 4th 2007 05:46
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: WidgetServer is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables
an application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server
Swing app, or as a Web app without any change and without loss of
functionality. A rich widget set is supported that includes tree views,
tabbed panes, split panels, and much more. A unified widget-based,
object-oriented programming interface for Web and Swing GUIs is offered to
the developer to control and assemble the GUI. Web applications are fully
AJAX enabled. For Swing client/server applications, the framework handles
client/server communication, including compression and security layers. A
GUI builder is included.
Changes: This release has been tested to be compatible with IE 7, FireFox
2, and Java 6. HTTP session timeout now works for Swing based thin
clients. Invalid Swing HTTP sessions are recognized by the server, which
closes the client automatically. TabbedPanes are able to render any other
component (like a "Tab-Close-Button") in tabs. Accelerators for menuitems
in pulldown menus and context menus were added. The halfobject
communication layer has been refactored to speed up low bandwidth
communication.

Thu, Jan 4th 2007 10:33
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Zoidcom is a high level, UDP based game networking library for
C/C++. Applications register their gameobjects with Zoidcom, and Zoidcom
will manage when which object and which internal data of that object is
sent to whom. It uses bitstreams as a native datatype and thus is very
bandwidth efficient. Support for filetransfers and many other things is
included.
Changes: This release adds the ability to send raw UDP packets to any
destination, direct support for wchar_t strings, forcing order of object
replication through object dependencies, and bandwidth optimizations.
There are some bugfixes.
