  Sun, Jan 7th 2007 22:02

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: cpulimit is a simple program that attempts to limit the CPU usage
of a process (expressed in percentage, not in CPU time). This is useful to
control batch jobs when you don't want they eat too much CPU. It does not
act on the nice value or other scheduling priority details, but on the
real CPU usage. Also, it is able to adapt itself to the overall system
load, dynamically and quickly.

[013] - Heirloom mailx 12.2
  by Gunnar Ritter (http://freshmeat.net/users/gritter/)
  Sun, Jan 7th 2007 17:18

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Heirloom mailx (formerly known as "nail") is derived from Berkeley
Mail and provides the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx
commands. Additional features include support for MIME, IMAP (including
caching and disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character
sets, maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring,
and a Bayesian junk mail filter. Mailx can be used as a mail batch language
in nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.

Changes: MIME message parts that are not of type "text/" are now always
encoded in base64 to avoid issues with CRNL conversion. Character set
conversion is now applied to attachments if they have the "text/" content
type. An interoperability problem concerning maildir folders has been
fixed. An invalid memory access when determining the current message in
threaded mode has been fixed. It is now possible to build with more recent
versions of Mozilla NSS.

[014] - imieniny 1.1.1 (Superkaramba)
  by F Cardone (http://freshmeat.net/users/fcardone/)
  Sun, Jan 7th 2007 17:47

Office/Business :: News/Diary
Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: Imieniny reads a list of names and the dates on which those saints
are commemorated in Poland. The "name-day", i.e. the day on which a saint
bearing a person's name is commemorated, is important in Poland, and is
celebrated like a birthday. The program, given a date, will display what
people have their "name-days" on that day. Given a name, it will display
when that name has its name-day(s). Since people in Poland like to send
little "mini-poems", a selection of these is included.

Changes: This theme uses the "-a caps" option (prints alerted names in ALL
CAPS), and therefore depends on imieniny 1.1 or higher.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: KPhotoAlbum (formerly known as KimDaBa, KDE Image Database) is a
tool for indexing, searching, and viewing images and videos. The indexing
is done by telling KPhotoAlbum who is on the images, where the images were
taken, and (optionally) adding descriptions. It is highly optimized for
easy indexing of images, so that it is possible to use it with thousands
of images. It also allows you to browse your images easily, based on the
properties (person, location, keywords) you specified when indexing.

Changes: This release is capable of categorizing and showing videos.
Sub-categories are now shown as hierarchies in the browser and in the
annotation dialog. In the annotation dialog, it is possible to put an item
into a sub-category simply by dragging it in there. There are several other
new features and bugfixes.

About: Papyrus is a 2D C++ scenegraph (canvas) library that utilizes the
cairo library to perform drawing operations. Similar canvas libraries are
the Gnome Canvas, Diacanvas, and the QT Canvas. Numerous canvas primitives
are available, including arcs, rectangles, polylines, and line markers. An
optional companion library, Papyrusmm, provides a set of Gtkmm widgets
which includes viewports (a canvas display widget similar to
Gtk::DrawingArea) and other UI widgets related to drawing interfaces.

Changes: This release features a working implementation of the Grid item.
A Grid is a canvas item that inherits from Drawable, and thus can have any
of the standard affine transforms (scaling, rotation, translation, skewing)
applied to it. It provides an API that allows for independent line drawing
styles of the X and Y axes, each border, and X and Y interval lines.
Additionally, initialization of the X11 color map has been split into four
files to make compilation easier on machines with 512MB or less.

[029] - Password Manager Daemon 0.3
  by Ben Kibbey (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjk/)
  Sun, Jan 7th 2007 16:51

Information Management
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: Password Manager Daemon serves clients data via a local socket. The
data is stored in an encrypted XML file, and the client must provide the
key to modify it. There is a library included to make patching
applications to use the daemon easier. The library also supports gpg-agent
for password/key retrieval.

Changes: The SETATTR command has been renamed to ATTR, which now includes
three new sub-commands: SET, DELETE, and LIST to manipulate element
attributes. A special attribute TARGET will "point" to another element in
the document. Command line options have moved to a configuration file. The
daemon no longer base-64 encodes or decodes the data. The client can do
that itself. There are a couple more protocol changes.

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: pdfTeX is an extended version of TeX that can create PDF directly
from TeX source files and enhance the result of TeX typesetting with the
help of PDF. When PDF output is not selected, pdfTeX produces normal DVI
output, otherwise it produces PDF output that looks identical to the DVI
output. An important aspect of this project is to investigate alternative
justification algorithms, optionally making use of multiple master fonts.

[031] - phpDIR browser 3.0
  by phpdir (http://freshmeat.net/users/phpdir/)
  Sun, Jan 7th 2007 22:56

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: phpDIR is an easy to use and install script that can list files and
folders, including file upload/download. Installation only requires the
configuration of 2 parameters. The whole package consists of a single
file. The application also supports admin sessions to delete, rename, and
chmod files or folders. Invisible files can be configured. Folders can be
downloaded as archive files. There is no need for additional PHP modules
on your Web server.

Changes: The entire code was optimized and ported to PHP5. File browsing
for any given root folder, a simple terminal, auto login, and the ability
to define your own temporary directory (for tar downloads) were
implemented. The option to download a tar archive is not shown if no
writable temporary directory is present. A temporary folder is no longer
created when listing a directory. Download of HTML and PHP files now
works. The temporary folder structure has been removed from the created
tar files. Tar files will no longer contain hidden files. Downloading of
hidden files by name guessing is now prevented.
