[001] - Absolute OS 11.0.7
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 06:15
About: Absolute OS is a fast Slackware derivative Linux distribution that
uses a Icewm and ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes with
Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, Azureus, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp, StarDict,
and many other titles all set up and ready to run. Several utilities are
included to ease configuration and management. It is compatible with all
Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a Slackware disk,
except that any choice of packages is removed, as it just installs
everything.
Changes: This release adds the proper faad2 version for use with
audio/video conversions using ffmpeg, and the needed libmp4v2. It updates
usbdrive (for USB sticks/devices) to properly handle USB sticks as a user
and when swapping between different devices. It includes a commandline
unrar utility. It turns off sshd in services by default.

[002] - ADOdb Lite 1.42
by Panama Jack (http://freshmeat.net/users/panamajack/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 01:26
Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet
About: ADOdb Lite is a small, fast replacement for ADODB that uses 1/6th
of the memory and is up to 300% faster, while being compatible with a
subset of the most commonly used ADODB commands. It supports Frontbase,
MaxDB, MiniSql, MSSQL, MySQL, ODBC, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and Sybase.
Changes: Query tracking was added for performance testing. There are three
new database array variables: $db->query_list, $db->query_list_time, and
$db->query_list_errors. These variables will contain every processed query
and the time it took to process the query for the current instance of the
database object. This will allow easy tracking of every query on any page
and the amount of time it took to execute each query. In all drivers, a
return variable by reference error was fixed when returning an empty
record set.

[007] - Construct 2.00 (release)
by ganges master (http://freshmeat.net/users/gangesmaster/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 10:39
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Construct is a Python library for declaratively defined data
structures, called "constructs". These constructs can both parse data into
an object and build an object into data. Constructs handle fields of either
byte or bit granularity, structs, unions, sequences, repeaters, adapters,
validators, switching, pointers, on-demand (lazy) parsing, and many more.
The library defines a large number of primitive constructs, as well a
large inventory of file formats and network protocols.
Changes: Construct2 is a rewrite of the library, making it faster and much
slimmer. The library is now byte-oriented instead of bit-oriented, so it
uses eight times less memory. It can parse files directly from the disk.
Meta constructs now use lambda instead of eval. Textual processing
(context free grammar) was added. On-demand parsing was added. Thorough
unit tests were added. A full online tutorial is available.

Internet
About: CorneliOS a Web based virtual operating system that runs on top of
a host system and offers services via HTML or XHTML over the Web. It
offers a secure environment that supports multiple users, large amounts of
data, and timesharing. It offers a user interface that looks familiar and
is easy to handle and learn, while still introducing some new concepts. It
acts as a software integration system (especially for Web applications),
and allows users and developers to create their own applications and to
share them.
Changes: A fatal bug that crashed the CMS was fixed. A feature that
catches such bugs was implemented. A new 3-level documentation philosophy
is used. /csr/system/releasenotes was added. Other minor additions,
changes, and fixes were done.

[009] - CryptoBox 0.3.2 (CryptoBox-Server)
by Lars (http://freshmeat.net/users/sumpfralle/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 03:55
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based
About: The CryptoBox project wants to bring data encryption to the masses.
It provides two packages: CryptoBox-Server and CryptoBox-CD. The
CryptoBox-Server package adds hard disk encryption to a file server
(running Samba, NFS, DAV, etc.) without annoying its users. The
CryptoBox-CD is targeted at users who want to set up an encrypting file
server without bothering about complicated administration issues.
Changes: Support for more than one hard disk was added. Manual
partitioning is allowed. LUKS is used for hard disk encryption. Plaintext
partitions are supported. The time and date can be changed. Flexible
feature management was implemented to enable and disable specific plugins.
Prepared RAID partitions are used.

[010] - delsafe 0.4.0-beta01
by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 19:28
About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.
Changes: File protection for new versions of rm is now expected to work. A
few small bugs have been fixed.

Fri, Jan 12th 2007 13:47
System :: Filesystems
System :: Installation/Setup
About: GNU Parted is a package for creating, destroying, resizing,
checking, and copying partitions and the file systems on them. This is
useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganizing disk
usage, copying data between hard disks, and disk imaging. It contains a
library, libparted, and a command-line frontend, parted, which also serves
as a sample implementation and script backend.
Changes: This release includes fixes for backtrace handling. In addition,
libparted now dynamically allocates exception message space. The library
also introduces a new function called ped_device_cache_remove() to remove
a single device from the cache. The parted(8) command line tool has been
improved. Zero size devices are now correctly shown as 0.00B rather than
-0.00kB. The 'print list' command is an alias for 'print all', and
'mktable' is an alias for 'mklabel'. The 'print devices' command is new in
this release.

Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
About: gpsd is a daemon that listens to a GPS or Loran receiver and
translates the positional data into a simplified format that can be more
easily used by other programs, like chart plotters. The package comes with
a sample client that plots the location of the currently visible GPS
satellites (if available) and a speedometer. It can also use DGPS/ip.
Changes: Many changes were made, perhaps the most obvious being the switch
from the GPL to the BSD license to facilitate commercial use. Drivers have
been updated. Regular regression testing and automated audits with
valgrind, splint, and code analyzers are performed. Unbounded string
functions have been eliminated. Performance and reliability is improved.
New optimizations were made for embedded deployments. Higher integrity
data handling was implemented. New client programs have been added. The
gpsd on-the-wire protocol has changed; hand-rolled parsers should be
verified against the documentation.

by kju (http://freshmeat.net/users/kju/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 06:42
Internet
System :: Networking
About: gwhois is a generic whois client (and server) which strives to
know the right server to query for each and every top level domain and IP
address. You can ask gwhois about a domain or IP address, and it will
automatically forward your query to the appropriate server. It even
queries whois servers that can only be reached by a Web form, and outputs
the results as text. It can be used as a client or as a relaying server,
so you can use your normal whois client to ask gwhois.
Changes: This release adds a method to make multiple lookups for the same
query. This is needed for the .vg TLD, which provides different
(complementing) data through whois vs. the Web interface. RIPE-Database
recognition of limerick objects has been corrected, and recognition of
poem objects added. The new four-byte AS numbers (e.g., "AS3.1") are now
recognized.

[021] - Internet DJ Console 0.6.9
by Stephen Fairchild (http://freshmeat.net/users/psoriasis/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 21:02
About: Internet DJ console is a graphical shoutcast/icecast client that
runs under GTK+ and the JACK audio connection kit. In short, it's an
Internet radio app for making a live radio show or podcast. Features
include two main media players with a crossfader, a jingle player,
microphone signal processing (compressor and noise gate), IRC track
announcements with X-Chat, an automatic stream shut-off timer, MP3 or Ogg
streaming and recording at various bit rates, aux input for connecting
external JACK aware applications, and audio level meters.
Changes: A context menu was added to the main window. An unclean CTRL+C
shutdown issue was fixed. Segfault protection was added to the
write_channel_data function. libsndfile is now used for decoding .wav
files. Deprecated gtk.threads_enter/leave instances were replaced. The
xlplayer_create function now returns only after the player is fully
initialized. The idjc-gui.py module directly waits on the mixer to
initialize. A xine config file was included to streamline xine-lib
initializations, preventing problematic memcpy probing and the loading of
unnecessary modules.

About: Jhead is a command line driven utility for extracting digital
camera settings from the Exif format files used by many digital cameras.
It handles the various confusing ways these can be expressed, and displays
them as F-stop, shutter speed, etc. It is also able to reduce the size of
digital camera JPEGs without loss of information, by deleting integral
thumbnails that digital cameras put into the Exif header. If you need to
add Exif support to a program, this is a simple program to cut and paste
from. Many projects, including PHP, have reused code from this utility.
Changes: The "-mkexif" option to create a new minimal EXIF section in an
existing image was added. The "-ds" and "-dsft" options to manipulate the
EXIF date and time were added. Image and thumbnail rotation flag handling
was fixed.

About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules, whereas the Classic module can be assimilated to an
improved version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that
you can readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging
systems, such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with
Servlet containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily
build your own modules on top of the Core module.
Changes: This version contains a whole new chapter about logback
configuration. Several other documentation pages have been improved.
Logback now uses Generics in many components. A JMX Configurator now
allows users to see and modify loggers or reload configuration, among
other possibilities. A JMSTopicAppender and JMSQueueAppender are now
available, as well as two new filters: LevelFilter and ThresholdFilter.
Refactoring was done in the filters objects to ease the implementation of
custom filters.

About: Mavscript allows the user to do calculations in a text document.
Plain text and OpenOffice Writer files (odt/sxw) are supported. The
calculation is done by the algebra system Yacas or by the Java interpreter
BeanShell.
Changes: Greek letters and Unicode characters in general can be used in
variable names. While the Java interpreter BeanShell natively supports
Unicode, the Yacas algebra system does not. This release adds Unicode
support to Mavscript for Yacas too.

an intelligent ECU interrogator, very flexible data logging, and a
configurable and extendable GUI.
Changes: A tab was added for Rotary Trailing support for MSnS-Extra.
Numerous internal bugs were fixed. Logviewer fixes were made. Major Locale
fixes were made regarding datalogging and tab conversion functions. Fixes
were made to logviewer to improve stability and viewability. The build
system was fixed so that the win9x one actually runs on Win9x. The Windows
EXEs were renamed to be more descriptive for the end user.

About: Msort sorts files in sophisticated ways. Records may be fixed size,
newline-separated blocks, or terminated by any specified character. Key
fields may be selected by position, tag, or character range. For each key,
distinct exclusions, multigraphs, substitutions, and a sort order may be
defined or locale collation rules used. Comparisons may be lexicographic,
numeric, numeric string, hybrid, random, by string length, angle, domain
name, date, time, month name, or ISO8601 timestamp. Keys may be reversed
so as to generate reverse dictionaries. Optional keys are supported.
Unicode is supported, including full case-folding. Msort itself has a
somewhat complex command line interface, but may be driven by an optional
GUI.
Changes: A bug has been fixed that caused a segmentation fault when
certain key-specific command-line options were used prior to any
key-selector. Makefile.am has been modified to force linkage with GMP
since on OpenBSD and Mac OS X the autoconfiguration system apparently
doesn't take care of this.

[045] - Simplebackup 1.8.1 (Stable)
by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 06:07
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Simplebackup is a cross-platform backup program. It reads a
configuration file, then it builds a compressed file for each of your
backup directories or files on your backup list, and places the compressed
files into another location. For example, this location can be a network
mapped drive in Windows, an NFS mounted drive in Unix, another hard disk,
an FTP server, an SFTP (Secure FTP) server, an HTTP (WebDAV) server, one
or more email accounts, or a tape device (Unix only). This will duplicate
your information, doing the so called "backup".
Changes: This release fixes two bugs in the algorithm that builds the
restoration list, a restoration problem, a problem which caused
simplebackup to be paused (forever) during restoration if the restored
files already existed (this only occurred with the rar and 7z formats),
and a bug related to sftp (secure ftp) support on Unix systems that was
preventing it from working.

by ashtong (http://freshmeat.net/users/ashtong/)
Fri, Jan 12th 2007 13:59
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
About: Spam Trainer makes it easier for GNOME users to train spam
filtering software (e.g. SpamBayes or SpamAssassin) that "learns" how to
tell the difference between real email (ham) and unsolicited messages
(spam). Not all email clients have spam filtering (and training) built
in, and training external filtering programs can be fiddly. Spam Trainer
provides easy (drag and drop) training from the Evolution mail client, and
should work just as well with any email client that supports the drag and
drop protocol implemented by the GTK+ toolkit.
Changes: 0.1.4 didn't run correctly with recent releases of Mono, and the
configure script failed on some more recent Linux distributions. 0.1.5
should address both these issues. There are no extra features in this
release.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: Virtual server monitor (vsmon) is a monitoring tool for
Linux-VServer that gives a system administrator a global view of all
vservers running on his park. vsmon aims to be a monitoring solution only.
For now, it does not offer control over the vservers' life cycle (e.g.
provisioning, start, stop, and restart operations). To use vsmon, you must
deploy one backend on each vserver host and one frontend, preferably in its
own vserver.
Changes: The frontend was reworked to display a summary of all hosts. An
owner can be assigned to each vserver. The backend can be used on hosts
without Linux-VServers, and it no longer obtains IP addresses. The libdnet
dependency was removed. The parsing of /proc/"pid"/stat now works for
kernel 2.6.18. A Nagios plugin was added, which enables the use of the
vsmon backend to monitor a host disk, memory, and swap. The plugin
monitors all mount points according to an "intelligent" algorithm, which
determines warning and critical thresolds as a function of the total size
of the partition.

and ideal for voice chat during netgames. It doesn't require any servers
or other infrastructure.
Changes: AES encryption was added. A username can be use to make calls
instead of an IP address. wt-locator server was added for locating users
by name and working around firewall/router NAT. Something vaguely
resembling a user guide was written.

About: The Wayback Machine is a pure Java implementation of the Internet
Achive Wayback Machine. This implementation is focused on modularity, with
flexible core data structures to allow new and experimental user interfaces
and document indexes. It includes an internal ARC file indexer, allowing
easy integration with the Heritrix Web crawler.
Changes: A sorted CDX flat file ResourceIndex implementation was added,
allowing for much larger data sets. Support for ArchivalUrl Date-Range
requests was added. Character set detection was improved so pages are not
mangled when server side modification occurs. Several new command-line
tools were added for generating and updating each ResourceIndex type.
Indexing and merging processing were separated into different threads.
Bugfixes were made to allow integration with NutchWax full-text searching.

[061] - X Python Newsreader 0.7.0
by Nemesis2001 (http://freshmeat.net/users/Nemesis2001/)

Communications :: Usenet News
About: X Python Newsreader (XPN) is a multi-platform newsreader with
Unicode support. It has features like scoring/actions, X-Face and Face
decoding, muting of quoted text, newsrc import/export, find article and
search in the body, spoiler char/rot13, random taglines, and configurable
attribution lines.
Changes: This release adds basic mult-iserver support. This change has
required some modifications to the groups db format; in order to keep your
subscriptions, you need to export to a newsrc file from XPN-0.6.5 and
reimport it in XPN-0.7.0. It is possible to use Function keys for
customized key bindings. The command used to test the connection in has
been modified order to prevent hamster hang-ups. A bug that caused XPN to
crash trying to export newsrc file with empty groups subscribed has been
fixed. A bug in the "Apply Scoring and Actions Rules" feature that caused
XPN crashes trying to apply the !kill rule has been fixed.
