Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
About: The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts.
The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.
Changes: Support for kernel 2.6.19 was added. Several AC97 problems were
fixed. Fixes were also made to the Apple Onboard Audio driver and to the
CA0106 driver. Support for several new devices was added to the HDA codec.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".
Changes: A bug related to the execution of target scripts on Solaris has
been fixed. Disabling a target now degrades VRRP priority by its tracking
value (if VRRP tracking is active).

About: hdparm is a Linux shell utility for viewing and manipulating
various IDE drive and driver parameters. Most drives can benefit from
improved performance using a command similar to "hdparm -qm8 -qu1 -qc1

Changes: A new "-H" flag for (Hitachi) drive temperature was implemented.
A new "-s" flag to control power-up in standby was added. Recognition of
SMART Command Transport (SCT) and the display of UDMA modes 3/4/5 was
added to "-i". "-I" display output was cleaned up. A bug in "-C" was
fixed. The "--Istdin" option was fixed to be pipe-safe. The

[028] - Hilbert II 0.03.01
by m31 (http://freshmeat.net/users/m31/)
Wed, Jan 17th 2007 08:09
Documentation
Education
Internet
About: The Goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. Any proof of a theorem in this "mathematical web" could be
drilled down to the very elementary rules and axioms. To make it more than
a huge number of logical correct formulas, it also contains information in
"common mathematical language". Think of an incredible number of
mathematical textbooks with hyperlinks, and each of its proofs could be
verified by *Hilbert II*. For each theorem, the dependency of other
propositions, definitions, and axioms could be easily derived.
Changes: This mongaga release of Hilbert II includes a formula checker
that can determine whether a formula is well formed. Detailed error
messages are produced if it is not. A new document describes the formula
and term language and the possible error codes. Furthermore, it is now
possible to export QEDEQ modules in XML form. This enables a round trip
engineering of the XML files. Under the hood, the trace function is now
based on Apache's Common Logging API. An adapted visitor pattern for QEDEQ
modules has been implemented.

[029] - host 20070117
by Greg A. Woods (http://freshmeat.net/users/woods/)
Wed, Jan 17th 2007 16:41
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration
About: Host is a complete and powerful command-line based DNS query and
testing tool. It has many of the same basic features as other similar
tools such as nslookup and dig, but it has more extensive testing and test
automation features. Host also has a much more standard (i.e. Unix-based)
command-line user interface.
Changes: The main change is primarily an internal one that corrects the
way cannonical hostname checking is done such that only pure DNS lookups
are done (by avoiding use of the often localized gethostbyname()). This is
the first, and perhaps most important, of changes to avoid the get*by*()
APIs. The --checkzone option has been fixed. Some minor changes have also
been made to make smarter use of the "recursion available" flag in
responses. A portability fix was made for NetBSD-3.x and newer (the
getnodeby*() APIs normally provided by libbind are silently left out of
NetBSD).

About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can
decode messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart
messages can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the
message body data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle
messages larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some

[061] - Python milter 0.8.7
by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
Wed, Jan 17th 2007 00:06
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.
Changes: The spf module was moved to pyspf. Code to prevent PTR cache
poisoning was added. More lame bounce heuristics were added. A fallback to
plain CBV when template is missing was added.

About: Shed Skin is an experimental Python-to-C++ compiler. It accepts
pure but implicitly statically typed Python programs and generates
optimized C++ code. This means that in combination with a C++ compiler, it
allows for translation of pure Python programs into highly efficient
machine language. For a set of 16 non-trivial test programs, measurements
show a typical speedup of 2-40 over Psyco, about 12 on average, and 2-220
over CPython, about 45 on average. Shed Skin also outputs annotated source
code.
Changes: Modifications to work on OS X and 64-bit systems. Improved
support for class attributes. Classes can now be used prior to their

About: Stunnix Advanced Web Server is a Web server for putting Web sites
onto CDROMs, DVDs, FlashDisks, and other readonly media to be used on any
typical system. Sites can be scripted with PHP or Perl and can be driven
by MySQL or SQLite databases. All required software programs are designed
to reside on the CDROM to avoid the need to install software on the user's
computer. The Web serving core is based on Apache 1.3.x, and has additional
functionality to detect and use free ports, automatically start a browser
on each platform, and to stop the Web server once a resource with a
special name is visited. Desktop applications can also be created with it.
Changes: This release adds a facility to allow selection of files and
folders on Web pages using native GUI dialogs on Windows and Mac OS X. It
adds support for PHP curl extension on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, for
PHP 4 and PHP 5. The CDBuilder GUI has been improved.
