[001] - Absolute OS 11.0.8
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Thu, Jan 18th 2007 16:08
About: Absolute OS is a fast Slackware derivative Linux distribution that
uses a Icewm and ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes with
Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, Azureus, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp, StarDict,
and many other titles all set up and ready to run. Several utilities are
included to ease configuration and management. It is compatible with all
Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a Slackware disk,
except that any choice of packages is removed, as it just installs
everything.
Changes: This release adds a plugin for flash 9. It updates libpng,
imagemagick, and GIMP.

[002] - AjaxTop 1.0.2
by Matt Thompson (http://freshmeat.net/users/mthomp1234/)
Thu, Jan 18th 2007 16:54
About: AjaxTop is a framework that uses XML for object binding on both the
client (JavaScript) and server (Java) to simplify Web application
development. The client side is AJAX-based and supports client-side custom
tags embedded in XHTML. A built-in tag library is provided, with a XUL-like
box model and a few widgets like Slider, Splitter, and Calendar. The server
side is servlet-based. It is a symmetric client/server protocol with XML as
the command language, and a shared design concept called tag-oriented
programming.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Apache Cayenne is a free object-relational persistence framework
written in Java. Its goal is to make development of database Java
applications faster and more consistent with the Object Oriented
Programming concept. Some of the ideas used in Cayenne have been inspired
by the persistence mechanism of NeXT's (and now Apple's) WebObjects
application server.
Changes: This release drops the "incubating" suffix from the release name
and fixes a number of important bugs. Upgrading is strongly recommended.

by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
Thu, Jan 18th 2007 10:10
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script is a secure stateful firewall for
both single and multi-homed machines. It supports NAT and SNAT, port
forwarding, ADSL ethernet modems with both static and dynamically assigned
IPs, MAC address filtering, stealth port scan detection, DMZ and DMZ-2-LAN
forwarding, protection against SYN/ICMP flooding, and extensive user
definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log flooding. It has
plugin support to add extra features (like SSH Brute Force protection and
(Racoon) IPSEC support). It is easy to configure and highly customizable.
A filter script that makes your firewall log more readable is also
included.
Changes: Another bugfix for the new module_probe routine.

Database
About: aSVERD (A Scaleable Vector Entity Relationship Diagram) is a simple
Java system (3 classes) for generating entity relationship diagrams (ERDs)
from an existing database as scalable vector graphics (SVG). The system is
run from the command line to generate the initial SVG file. No attempt is
made to lay out the tables other than as a grid. The diagram can be
round-trip updated against the database and table positions, notes, etc.
will be preserved. Connecting lines between the tables are generated by
JavaScript in the SVG, rather than being just “lines”. This way, they stay
connected to the tables with which they are associated, being redrawn each
time the diagram is displayed.
Changes: There are fixes for FireFox onload handling. This release will
zoom when an entity is clicked.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor, similar to the
top command. At regular intervals, it shows system-level activity related
to the CPU, memory, swap, disks and network layers, and it shows for every
active process the CPU utilization in system and user mode, the virtual and
resident memory growth, priority, username, state, and exit code. The
process level activity is also shown for processes which finished during
the last interval, to get a complete overview about the consumers of
things such as CPU time. Atop only shows the active system-resources and
processes, and only shows the deviations since the previous interval.
Changes: A busy percentage is shown for each network-interface. Colors are
used to indicate that a particular hardware resource has (almost) reached a
critical busy percentage. The most critical resource is automatically
determined to adapt the sorting order for active processes dynamically.
Minor bugs were fixed.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings.
Many tools show the spectrum, but this tool focuses on one or two specific
octaves with an indication of the tonica (the key) and sub-dominant(IV) and
dominant(V). It also supports wavelet transformation and resampling to
further analyze and clean-up the recording. This way, notes, chords, and
harmonics in a musical piece become more clear. Another feature is that
this tool can compare audio output (from a .wav file) with audio input
(microphone). This way, external filters added between the audio out and
in and the effects of a sound card can be studied.
Changes: The 'iviv' display looks for harmonic structure in a spectrum by
comparing a pitch with its fourth and fifth recursively. The result is a
visualisation of a 'binary search tree'.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
About: BEJY is a modular server application. It is packaged, by default,
as a Web application container and mail server with SSL. It has
functionality similar to inetd, and has some helper classes/functions to
ease the implementation of new protocols. It provides a generic
multithreaded TPC/IP server implementation with optional SSL support,
covering the complete connection and thread management. Each supported
service provides its protocol implementation. The current version comes
with HTTP, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP protocol implementations. The HTTP
protocol implementation also contains a servlet engine, a JSP 1.2 engine,
a handler to invoke CGI, and other useful things. The mail protocols
require a database using JDBC, as MySQL, MSSQL, and others.
Changes: Support has been added for SPF to reduce the number of spam false
positives. In IMAP, escaping of special characters in ENVELOPE has been
fixed. In SERVLET/JSP, getRequestURI has been fixed in forward() and
include(), and initial support has been added for servlet 2.4. New request
listeners are working.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: Cobbler is a command line tool for configuring provisioning and
update servers. It supports provisioning via PXE, virtualization (Xen),
and re-provisioning an existing Linux system ("auto-kickstarting") when
having a PXE environment isn't possible. The latter two features are
enabled by usage of ’koan’ (a client side provisioning application) on the
remote system. Update server features include yum mirroring over rsync://
and integration of those mirrors with kickstart. Cobbler is easy to use
and has an accompanying Python API. It supports RHEL4+, Fedora Core 5+,
and derivative distributions.
Changes: This release adds support for remote tracking of the kickstart
installation progress, which should be useful in medium sized
installations and large datacenters that cannot easily watch
installations. The new command is "cobbler status", and is detailed in the
man page documentation. This release enables a lock file to prevent
conflicts and adds some command aliases. The cobbler list is now more
concise.

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: The Open Robot Control Software (OROCOS) framework applies
software patterns in C++ to achieve real-time execution of software
components and provides an infrastructure to quickly integrate them in a
real-time operating system such as RTAI or RTLinux, although it can be
tested on normal Linux systems. It is designed to appeal to roboticists.
Changes: The licence was changed from the LGPL to the GPL + linking
exception. The LGPL did not cover C++ templates correctly, while the new
license does and is legally more sound for use in commercial applications.
This release improved the online documentation, and addresses a race
condition and a CORBA build issue.

The splash screen can now be hidden by left-clicking on it. Below the
surface, Phex got an all new and more structured system for handling
preferences, which further improves the separation of GUI and Core. A
download write buffer is used to reduce the load on your disk. Some nasty
little bugs were fixed.

[036] - Seed7 2007-01-18

Thu, Jan 18th 2007 16:01
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.
Changes: The compiler was improved to support interfaces (dynamic
functions). With this improvement, several example programs can be
compiled. The support for the actions gkb_busy_getc, gkb_xpos, gkb_ypos,
kbd_busy_getc, drw_pfellipse, and arr_arrlit2 was added to the compiler.
The X11 keyboard driver was improved.

[037] - Sendmail filter for SpamAssassin 1.3.1
by Eugene Kurmanin (http://freshmeat.net/users/smfs/)
Thu, Jan 18th 2007 06:44
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: smf-spamd is a Sendmail filter for SpamAssassin. It aims to be
lightweight, reliable, and simple rather than have a myriad of options. It
only scans the messages less than defined size, has a hosts/networks
whitelist, performs subject tagging if SPAM is detected, adds an
information header, copies SPAM messages to the defined "garbage" mailbox,
rejects SPAM messages at the SMTP DATA stage, and logs all filter
activities to syslog. The code is small (does not exceed 580 lines), fast,
stable, and few resources are required. No temporary files are created.
Changes: Incorrect handling of missed Message-Id: header was fixed.
Cosmetic enhancements were made.
