[014] - Cobbler 0.3.7
  by Michael DeHaan (http://freshmeat.net/users/mpdehaan/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 00:09

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: Cobbler is a command line tool for configuring provisioning and
update servers. It supports provisioning via PXE, virtualization (Xen),
and re-provisioning an existing Linux system ("auto-kickstarting") when
having a PXE environment isn't possible. The latter two features are
enabled by usage of ’koan’ (a client side provisioning application) on the
remote system. Update server features include yum mirroring over rsync://
and integration of those mirrors with kickstart. Cobbler is easy to use
and has an accompanying Python API. It supports RHEL4+, Fedora Core 5+,
and derivative distributions.

Changes: This release expands on the kickstart tracking features of the
previous release, adding integrated remote syslogging, and finer grained
status for the "cobbler status" command. In addition, default kickstarts
are now fully automatic, and a kickstart file for FC6 taking advantage of
yum repository management in Anaconda has been added. A bug regarding
mod_python/Apache configuration on RHEL4/Centos4 that could result in
corrupted binary downloads has also been fixed. Users on those platforms
who have installed 0.3.6 should remove /etc/httpd/conf.d/cobbler.conf and
run "cobbler sync" again.

[015] - Crossroads Load Balancer 1.24
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 01:20

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is a load balance and failover utility for TCP-based
services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and features
extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup calls",
highly configurable dispatch modes of client requests to back ends,
detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend calls
fail, support for "sticky" HTTP sessions, and more. It is
service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH, SMTP, DNS, MySQL, etc.

Changes: This is the next stable release. Since the previous stable 1.17,
hooks for external balancing decision makers were introduced, bugs were
fixed (mostly related to session counting), and versioned tarballs are
available via http://crossroads.e-tunity.com/downloads/versions/.

[019] - ExactImage 0.3.2
  by René Rebe (http://freshmeat.net/users/ReneRebe/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 03:10

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library. Unlike
ImageMagick, it allows operation in several color spaces and bit depths
natively, resulting in much lower memory and computational requirements.
Some optimized algorithms operate in 1/20 of the time ImageMagick
requires, and displaying large images can be as fast as 1/10 of the time
the "display" program takes.

Changes: The convolution matrix was optimized and now performs 20% faster.
The sub-byte image iterator (for pixel depths of 1, 2, and 4 bits per
pixel) was fixed so that it does not accumulate the new pixel data over
possible existing random garbage, but masks out the bits correctly. The
sub-byte colorspace conversion shortpath was fixed to correctly deal with
sparse bits at the end of each scanline. A typographical error in the
big-endianess part of the BMP codec was fixed.

[021] - GPalta 0.3
  by Neven Boric (http://freshmeat.net/users/nvn/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 00:50

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: GPalta is a genetic programming toolbox that aims for simplicity
and speed. It features tree-based genetic programming, optional strong
typing, a multithreaded GUI to control an evolution process, the ability
to save evolutions to a file, to be continued at another time and place,
and easy interoperability with Matlab.

Changes: The code was restructured to allow for different type of
individuals. Multi-tree individuals were implemented. The code was
migrated form Ptolemy Plot to JChart2D (GPL). The code is now easier to
customize, since fitness, selector, population, and ranking classes can be
directly specified in a configuration file. Several new utility methods
were implemented in the Common class. New nodes were added. Bugs were
fixed.

Communications
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Grapple is designed to be a simple network layer, allowing the
addition of multiuser features to an application for as little as a dozen
lines of code. However, it also allows for more. It features simple
client-server networking that keeps all clients aware of all other
clients, passworded servers, and data transfer via TCP, UDP, or reliable
UDP. Advanced features include network messaging via push, pull, or a
combination, multiple methods of querying users, user groups for client
bandwidth saving, network load reacting data transmission and
retransmission, background pinging to monitor network states, server
failover, and a fully functional lobby system.

Changes: This release improves the UDP layer to work through NAT in most
situations, fixes server failover issues, and increments the internal
protocol number due to changes in the UDP protocol.

  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 18:57

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking

About: HAproxy is a high-performance and highly-robust TCP/HTTP load
balancer which provides cookie-based persistence, advanced traffic
regulation with surge protection, automatic failover, run-time regex-based
header control, Web-based reporting, advanced logging to help
trouble-shooting buggy applications and/or networks, and a few other
features. Its own event-driven state machine achieves 10,000 hits per
second on modern hardware, even with tens of thousands of simultaneous
connections.

Changes: A missing pointer assignment in the new HTTP parser made it
possible for anybody to remotely crash version 1.3.6 by sending a request
containing an empty header. All 1.3.6 users must upgrade. A missing
include that broke building on FreeBSD has been fixed.

[029] - Japanese Vocabulary 0.4
  by Andrew Young (http://freshmeat.net/users/vaelen_org/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 00:57

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Japanese Vocabulary is an application for studying Japanese
vocabulary. It consists of a set of cards, each with the kanji spelling,
kana reading, and the meaning in English (or another language). It uses
the Leitner system for managing the cards, which means that you see the
cards you know well less often than you see the ones that you don't know
very well. This allows the learner to focus on learning those words with
which they are having trouble. It comes with the JLPT 2, 3, and 4
vocabulary lists.

Changes: JLPT 2 vocabulary and statistics on the number of cards in the
vocabulary file were added.

GNU/Linux & Win32. Features include creation and editing of geometry in
multiple realtime OpenGL solid, shaded, and texture-mapped views;
unlimited undos and redos; complete extensibility at runtime through
third-party plugins; animated procedural geometric effects; all parameters
animatable through a consistent control-spline based interface; rendering
pipeline to Renderman Interface compliant rendering engines; optimization
for use with the Aqsis rendering engine, which features solid modelling,
true displacement, and user programmable shaders; and support for
background and batch rendering.

Changes: This release features major changes to the internal file-handling
code to work correctly with files containing non-ASCII characters. Due to
the sweeping changes needed to make this possible, this version is
considered a "development" release, so users are encouraged to use this
release for testing and feedback only. All users are strongly encouraged

System
System :: Boot
System :: Installation/Setup

About: slakbootIBS (Slackware Interactive Boot Scripts) is an enhanced set
of replacement boot scripts for the Slackware Linux distribution. It
includes a set of control and dispatch tools for configuring and booting
with colorized interactive scripts. The new boot process allows the
operator to select or skip start-up components in realtime. It facilitates
debugging of startup problems and allows operators to maintain a common
baseline to support several local configurations or multiple servers with
a single set of scripts.

Changes: This release adds sendmail support for the SASL authentication
server. It fixes rc.sendmail to correctly invoke /bin/killall. It fixes an
rc.inet1 bug where a restart of syslogd could leach out a screen disrupting
message. rc.udev has been upgraded to conform to the IBS screen format.
Full paths have been added to rc.6 binaries, so if the environment is
trashed or compromisd, you can shutdown safely. rc.mysql has been upgraded
with better message formatting. The script is now smart enough to dispatch
either safe_mysqld or mysqld_safe.

Scientific/Engineering :: Electronic Design Automation (EDA)

About: Slam is a mature IC Layout editor with the ability to edit very
large designs (such as stream files larger than 10GB). Novel features
include threading for redraw, support for displaying on multiple X servers
simultaneously, and a Tcl interface to the database for user extensibility.
The system is a library based system with multi-user support. Programmable
structures (P-Cells) are available in Tcl. The editor includes gds input
and output.

Changes: This release adds support for CBLOCKS in oasis design files.
There is a new "peek" mode to limit cells loaded in a design to those
within a specified window, which reduces maximum memory usage on very
large designs. Queried data is displayed in a text widget instead of the

[061] - upgrade.php 14
  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 00:43

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The upgrade.php script provides PHP backwards compatiblity. It does
so by automatically defining workalikes for more recently introduced PHP
core functions when run in an older interpreter version. This allows a
developer to safely use the more advanced features of PHP while still
getting most applications to run on outdated servers.

Changes: Compatibility code for PHP 5.1 and 5.2 has been added. The
functions json_encode, json_decode, strptime, htmlspecialchars_decode,
fputcsv, and a few others are available now.

[063] - Wocvim 1.1
  by Alpt (http://freshmeat.net/users/Alpt/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 05:48

Text Editors

About: Wocvim is a WoC client for Vim. WoC is a protocol which enables the
use of hyperlinks in plain ASCII texts. The links can point to local or
remote locations. The protocol is specifically designed to support source
code, but it can be used in any text. For source code, it's also possible
to use ad-hoc tag generators like cscope and ctags.

Changes: A little bit of documentation has been added. The $WOC_FILE_LIST
environment variable is now used by woctag.sh. It is useful to specify a
custom file list.

[064] - XCC 0.6.1
  by Evgeny Stambulchik (http://freshmeat.net/users/fnevgeny/)
  Fri, Jan 26th 2007 18:55

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XCC is a tool for building XML format parsers. One way to describe
what XCC does is by analogy with a generic parser generator, e.g. yacc or
bison. Yacc needs a lexical analyzer to function properly, and that
lexical analyzer is usually built with (f)lex. In the XML world, there are
a few packages which fill in the role of lex (expat and libxml are the most
known), but the high-level grammar parsing is usually done by a
hand-written code; writing such a parser is a tedious and error-prone
task. XCC was created to help developers in writing reliable
easy-to-understood parsers for handling complex XML-based grammars.

Changes: The build process has been fixed.
