[001] - /etc/net Scripts 0.8.5
  by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)
  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 07:26

System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, PentNET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: This release features bugfixes to Makefile and RPM specfiles as
well as DHCP, QoS, and firewall code.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk is a tool for monitoring the security of installed software.
Advisory Check gathers security advisories using RSS/RDF/XML feeds,
compares them against a list of known software, and alerts you if you're
vulnerable. Since adding software lists by hand would be quite a boring
task, advchk leverages your system's package manager for detecting
software. Software installed on remote systems can be monitored by
executing the remote package manager as an SSH ForcedCommand using
Public-key authentication.

Changes: A LICENSE file was added in order to be DFSG-compliant.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent. It also supports Metalink version 3.0.

Changes: This release adds chunk checksum validation in Metalink download,
adds file pre-allocation, and fixes a number of bugs.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GiNaC (GiNaC is Not a CAS (Computer Algebra System)) is a C++
library for symbolic calculations. It is designed to allow the creation of
integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more
established areas of computer science (like computation-intense numeric
applications, graphical interfaces, etc.). Contrary to other CASes it does

extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.

Changes: The heuristic GCD algorithm now has a better worst-case behavior.
Collecting for sparse multivariate polynomials and the
collect_common_factors() function have been improved. Bugs in the
numerical evaluation of multiple polylogs, the numerical integration of
complex functions, and in the tensor::replace_contr_index() method have

[015] - Gujin 1.7
  by Etienne (http://freshmeat.net/users/etiennelorrain/)
  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 06:57

System :: Boot :: Init

About: Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It
finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable
partitions (for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical
menu for selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the
structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even
load very big kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a
new kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory.
Gujin is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in
real mode to be as compatible as possible.

Changes: Quite a few problems were solved for USB HDD thumb drives and
boot disk autodetection. CD/DVD drive bugs were worked around. Linux
parameter compatibility (initrd load address) was improved. BIOS PCI
probing and ELF kernel loading were added.

  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 20:47

Communications :: File Sharing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: LibTorrent is a BitTorrent library written in C++ for Unix. It is
designed to avoid the redundant buffers and data copying that most (all?)
other BitTorrent implementations suffer from. The library is
single-threaded and the client handles the select loop. An interactive
ncurses client is included as an example.

Changes: This release adds support for limits on simultaneous HTTP
connections, a new file list showing directories, and the creation of
symbolic links on download state change.

  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 06:42

System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System Kernels :: BSD

About: MirBSD originated as a patch set against OpenBSD-current, an ultra
secure operating system and NetBSD derivate, and has since also
incorporated changes from NetBSD, a 4.4BSD-derived ultra portable
operating system. It features bugfixes, code removal for the sake of
simplicity, and feature enhancements over stock OpenBSD as well as a much
more up-to-date GNU toolchain, careful integration of patches from other
projects (such as KAME), and many improvements. It works on the Intel
Pentium and some 80486 machines with more than 32 MiB RAM and the SPARC,
and a port to the PowerPC Macintosh is in preparation.

Changes: Compared to #9-stable, this snapshot adds some support for i18n:
multibyte strings (i.e. Unicode) and UTF-8 are now fully supported by the
base system and the default environment uses UTF-8. The snapshot also
contains fixes to termcap, gcc, libm, lynx, mksh, ssh, X, and others.

[054] - StreamCruncher 1.06 Beta
  by Ashwin Jayaprakash (http://freshmeat.net/users/AshwinJ/)
  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 03:52

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Monitoring

About: StreamCruncher is an Event Processor. It supports a language based
on SQL which allows you to define "Event Processing" constructs like
Sliding Windows, Time Based Windows, Partitions, and Aggregates. Such
constructs allow for the specification of boundaries (some are time
sensitive) on a Stream of Events that SQL does not provide. Queries can be
written using this language, which in turn can be used to monitor streams
of incoming events. It also provides a feature similar to materialized
views. Joins and sub-queries are also supported to allow event
co-relation. A database is used underneath to do the heavy lifting.

Changes: This release contains two new improvements in the Query language.
The first addition is the "case..when.." clause, which is an extremely
useful feature to handle null column values, to rewrite column values, and
to do other similar things. The second addition is the "first n" or "top n"
or the "limit m offset n" clauses to sample just a few Rows or Events
without having to retrieve all the Events or Rows, which is always time
consuming. Both of these features work only if the database being used
supports these clauses.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a
lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server
which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is
based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a
persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter
the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter
plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python, VisualBasic.net, C#, and PHP client
demos are included in the xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo
clients are scheduled. XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback
framework, allowing browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant
callbacks over a persistent http connection. A security plugin framework
allows authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are
LDAP- and passwd-based plugins available.

Changes: This release has gone .NET and supports C#, VB.net, and managed
C++ access. This allows seamless communication with other languages and
operating systems like C/C++, Java and scripting languages. Further
support is for Windows CE (Smartphone, PocketPC, and Mobile), e.g. on ARM
/ XScale processors.

[063] - Zip extension for PHP 1.8.5 (Stable)
  by Pierre (http://freshmeat.net/users/pierrej/)
  Sun, Jan 28th 2007 22:43

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The Zip extension for PHP aims to provide a convenient and powerful
set of functionality to work with zip archives. It can read, write, and
create zip archives. It also supports stream access to any archive entry.
It is 100% compatible with the old versions of the extension (which were
read-only).

Changes: A bug in extractTo has been fixed. This bug neglected to create
an empty path (empty1/empty2/) recursively. A leak happening on error has
been eliminated.
