[006] - Charles Web Debugging Proxy 2.6.2
by karl (http://freshmeat.net/users/karlvr/)
Wed, Jan 31st 2007 14:40
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: Charles is a Web debugging tool, HTTP monitor, and reverse HTTP
proxy for Web developers that includes plain text debugging of HTTPS/SSL.
It is built in Java Swing, and runs on all Java platforms. It is an HTTP
proxy server that displays requests and responses, complete with HTTP
headers. This enables the developer to examine the exact content of HTTP
exchanges, including cookies, caching, and redirects. It can also throttle
your connection in order to simulate modem conditions. It is a valuable
tool for all Web developers and is especially useful for debugging XML
RCP, SOAP, Web services, AJAX/XMLHTTP, and Macromedia Flash client-server
traffic including AMF, AMF 3, LoadVars, and XML Sockets.
Changes: Large responses are now stored in temporary files, reducing
memory usage and removing the need for recording limits. The throttling
feature now avoids fragmenting throttled packets by introducing an MTU
setting. AMF3/Flex 2 parsing was improved. Various improvements were made
to viewers including the multipart body, JSON, and Authentication viewers.

Wed, Jan 31st 2007 07:18
Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: dnshistory provides a means for storing a history of DNS/name
changes over time from the IP Addresses gathered from within Web log
files. At its simplest, it will do massively parallel name lookups very
quickly. The lookups are not DNS only, and will use whatever naming
services your system is configured with. A second mode will take a Web log
file and replace the IP addresses with the previously stored names, sending
the resulting output to STDOUT.

[013] - FlightFeather Social Networking Platform 0.3.2 (Development)

Wed, Jan 31st 2007 11:13
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
About: FlightFeather's goal is "social networking for everyone". This
means that anyone should have a chance to run a popular social networking
site on minimal hardware, and without wasting bandwidth. Whenever the
system's state changes, it generates static HTML pages. Pure read
operations (usually about 90% of the total) do not require the application
to run at all. Although FlightFeather is at an early stage of development,
it is already functional, and runs the "bosstats.com" site.
Changes: This release updates the submission feature (which currently
supports Digg) introduced in version 0.3.0. The old behavior was to submit
article body text only up to the first URL in the story. The new approach
submits the maximum allowed text, including any URLs encountered along the
way. In the future, there may be an option to enable the old behavior, as
well as other, alternative ways to process submissions.

Wed, Jan 31st 2007 08:07
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: GNU Lightning is a library that generates assembly language code
at run time. It is very fast, making it ideal for Just-In-Time compilers,
and it abstracts over the target CPU, as it exposes to the clients a
standardized RISC instruction set (inspired by the MIPS and SPARC chips).
Changes: This is a development version, but it should be stable except for
the new x86-64 back-end. Other new features include support for allocation
of stack-based variables, support for Mac OS X/Intel. Many bugs were fixed
in the SPARC backend. The "push" and "pop" opcodes are now deprecated
because of differences in the stack layout of various ABIs; stack-based
variables should be used instead.

Wed, Jan 31st 2007 14:36
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Scanners
Office/Business
About: gscan2pdf is a GUI to ease the process of producing PDFs from
scanned documents. You scan in one or several pages and create a PDF of
selected pages. At maturity, the GUI will have similar features to that of
the Windows Imaging program, but with the express objective of writing a
PDF, including metadata. Scanning is handled with SANE via scanimage. PDF
conversion is done by libtiff. Perl is used for portability and ease of
programming, with gtk2-perl for the GUI.
Changes: The Czech translation has been updated, and a Spanish translation
added. This release passes image depth to ImageMagick to ensure rotation
produces a valid TIFF. DjVu support has been added. A bug has been fixed
where device-dependent options disappeared if the frontend changed while
the scan dialog was hidden. There is a progress bar while updating
device-dependent options. Unpaper support and undo/redo have been added.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: HAVP (HTTP Anti Virus Proxy) is a proxy which scans downloads for
viruses with several scanners (ClamAV, F-Prot, Kaspersky, NOD32, Sophos)
at the same time. The main aims are continuous, non-blocking downloads and
smooth scanning of dynamic and password protected HTTP traffic. It can be
used with squid or standalone, and it also supports transparent proxy
mode.
Changes: A bug was fixed in the TCP buffer. This bug sometimes caused
requests to leak to other clients. Support for Arcavir scanner was added.
Multiple IP addresses are supported in hostnames, and all are tried if
necessary. The Proxy-Authorization header is passed to the parent proxy.
Scanner errors are ignored if MAXSCANSIZE is reached. The build system was
polished a bit (--prefix supported). Support for old NOD32 scanner (set
NOD32VERSION in config) was added. The default for MAXSCANSIZE is 5000000,
and it is not suggested to be 0 anymore.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
About: Jaikoz is a powerful tag editor that allows you to organize, edit,
and correct thousands of audio tags with ease. Jaikoz has powerful

the actual music as well as the metadata. Jaikoz uses a convenient
spreadsheet view to allow you to edit information very quickly and
provides many autoformatting tasks which do most of the work for you.
Changes: Acoustic IDs are now created using MusicIP's system, which is
much more accurate than the previous TRM system. Tracks on MusicBrainz are
now looked up using the new XMLWebService, using the new Acoustic IDs
and/or Metadata. More fields are now populated upon a successful
MusicBrainz match. You can now submit MusicBrainz IDs and Acoustic IDs
back to MusicBrainz. A toolbar was added for the main functions. A new

with ordinary XML and text processing tools. Your data can be migrated to
new application versions, to C++, and to other applications by
transforming the XML. Unlike other Java XML serializers, JSX is accurate
for all objects.
Changes: Documentation was added for class evolution/object migration by
transforming the XML using XSLT.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: JOpt.SDK is an automated vehicle routing and dispatching component
for both Java/J2SE and .NET. It can solve Travelling Salesman Problems
(TSP) and Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problems with Time Windows
(CVRP,VRPTW). It offers route and transport optimisation with respect to
various constraints such as time windows, load capacities, and prescribed
itinerary. The component is based on genetic algorithms, and automatically
determines an optimized allocation of vehicels to an arbitrary set of
orders.

About: libetc is an LD_PRELOAD-able shared library designed for
maintaining a home directory without dot-files. It intercepts file
operations, so if a program tries to open a dotfile in $HOME, it is
redirected to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME (as defined by freedesktop). You can then
store all your configuration files in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME instead of using

[032] - Logback 0.9
by Sebastien Pennec (http://freshmeat.net/users/sebastienpennec/)
Wed, Jan 31st 2007 08:04
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Logging
About: Logback is intended as a successor to the popular log4j project,
and was designed by log4j's founder, Ceki Gulcu. The basic architecture is
sufficiently generic so as to apply under different circumstances. It is
divided into three modules. The Core module lays the groundwork for the
other two modules, whereas the Classic module can be assimilated to an
improved version of log4j. It natively implements the SLF4J API so that
you can readily switch back and forth between logback and other logging
systems, such as log4j or JDK14 Logging. The Access module integrates with
Servlet containers to provide HTTP access log functionality. You can easily
build your own modules on top of the Core module.
Changes: This version contains a new component, namely the
ContextSelector. This provides context separation and management when
logback is used by several web-apps running under the same server. A new
chapter was added to the logback manual to detail the use of the
ContextSelector, along with its associated components. The JMXConfigurator
has been improved. It now shows the context's Status objects, which lets
users check the internal state of logback. The logback manual's chapter 2,
about logback's architecture, has been updated with two sections: "Under
the hood" and "Performance".

About: metaas provides Java applications with a "Document Object Model"
for ActionScript 3 code. Its primary function is generating code, but it
allows existing .as source files to be loaded, and simple modifications to
be made. The current implementation is still immature, and does not support
all AS3 syntax.
Changes: An ActionScriptProject can now have a classpath, so that you can
reference the .swc files that come with Flex2 with the auto-imports
feature. Incorrect interface definition code generation (and bad
implements-clauses in class definitions) were fixed. Regular-expression
literals are now accepted by the internal parser, and a number of other
bugs and missing bits of syntax support were dealt with.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security
About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to do all
kinds of email processing, including anti-virus scanning, anti-spam
scanning, replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding boilerplate
disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts of a MIME
message according to a Perl-based policy filter. It can also bounce
messages with unacceptable attachments and modify SMTP response codes on
the fly. It works with the Sendmail 8.11 and newer "Milter" API, which
makes it more flexible and efficient than procmail-based approaches.
Changes: This version includes a new graphical tool that lets you monitor
a cluster of MIMEDefang scanners. It contains fixes to the build scripts
that should eliminate build problems on Intel/AMD 64-bit architectures.

[036] - MoSSHe 1.4.0
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Wed, Jan 31st 2007 14:41
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts are included for remote services (DNS, HTTP, IMAP2,
IMAP3, POP3, samba, SMTP, and SNMP) and local systems (disk space, load,
CPU temperature, fan speed, free memory, print queue size and activity,
processes, RAID status, shells, log file events (logins, restarts, and
brute force attacks), and mail queue).
Changes: The name of mosshe checks has been changed (mosshe_ssh instead of
ssh). A MOSSHE_HTTP check has been added for unencrypted HTTP-based
checking. Logs/statechange_YEAR.log has been added for easier
uptime/downtime calculation.

System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of passive network monitoring tools to
measure, account, classify, aggregate, and export IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. A
pluggable and flexible architecture allows collected network data to be
stored into memory tables or SQL (MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL) databases and
exported through NetFlow or sFlow protocols to remote collectors. pmacct
supports fully customizable historical data breakdown, flow sampling,
filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap, sFlow
v2/v4/v5 and NetFlow v1/v5/v7/v8/v9 are supported.
Changes: The 'aggregate_filter' directive now supports multiple (up to
128) pcap-style filters per-plugin. Turn-back time when restarting the
daemons has been significantly improved by creating sockets with the
SO_REUSEADDR option and disassociating them first thing on receiving a
SIGINT signal. A new threaded version of the pmacctd stream classification
engine is also being introduced. The new [ns]facctd_disable_checks

written text by saving the time delta between keystrokes and offering a
way to reproduce it exactly how it has been written. It offers a protocol
