About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: An unneccesary delay when piping into "bng control" has been
removed. The distribution of the session hash table function has been
improved. Packet forwarding at "set ipforwarding 1" is no longer affected
by disabled targets. A system "snapshot" functionality collecting support
service data has been added. The manual has been updated to release
1.792.0.

[010] - EMAN 1.8
  by Steve Ludtke (http://freshmeat.net/users/sludtke42/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 23:35

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering

About: EMAN is a scientific image processing suite with full Python
bindings. While it is mainly designed to perform single-particle
reconstructions of individual molecules, it may also have uses for many
other imaging methods. Single particle reconstruction is a method where
projection images of individual molecules in random orientations are
processed to produce a 3D structure of the molecule in question. The
library can process 1-3 dimensional data in a variety of formats,
including a variety of Fourier and real-space filters and many more
esoteric image processing routines.

Changes: Substantial improvements were made in refine2d.py. Using
refine2d.py on all new data sets is strongly suggested. Some programs use
the EMAN2 style of arguments, i.e. "program <file> --option=value", rather
than the old style, "program <file> option=value". There is a new HDF5
format compatible with EMAN2. New AIRS programs were added, such as
"skeleton". New options were added to make refinement work better on large
icosahedral objects. The parallelism infrastructure was improved, though
network-related problems may still exist. Random model generation in
makeinitialmodel.py was fixed.

  by Christian Iseli (http://freshmeat.net/users/c4chris/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 15:06

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: ESTScan is a program that can detect coding regions in DNA
sequences, even if they are of low quality. ESTScan will also detect and
correct sequencing errors that lead to frameshifts. It is not a gene
prediction program, nor is it an open reading frame detector. In fact, its
strength lies in the fact that it does not require an open reading frame to
detect a coding region. As a result, the program may miss a few translated
amino acids at either the N or the C terminus, but will detect coding
regions with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: JPPF is a computational grid framework for Java focused on
performance and ease of use. It provides a set of tools and APIs to enable
the parallelization of CPU intensive applications, and distribute their
execution over a network of heterogenous nodes. It features platform
independence thanks to Java 1.5, does not require you to deploy your
application classes to a server, scales up to millions of nodes, has a
built-in fail-over mechanism on all the framework's components, and has a
monitoring and administration GUI tool to enable remote monitoring of the
server health and server shutdown/restart operations.

Changes: A server connection pooling capability was added to the client,
resulting in increased throughput and performance. A new demonstration and
documentation section were added to illustrate that capability. Multiple
bugs were fixed in the administration console, resulting in a greater
usability of its charting capabilities. A new, lightweight distribution of

  by Nocturn (http://freshmeat.net/users/nocturn/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 07:57

System :: Systems Administration

About: K5expire is a tool to complement a Kerberos/LDAP server
combination. It checks all kerberos principals per user in LDAP for
password and/or account expiration and sends email to the owners if they
will expire in a preconfigured amount of time. It started as a hack to
emulate the behavior of expiration found in pam_unix and Windows, but this
method is believed to be less intrusive because it does not delay the login
process.

Changes: This is a major rewrite of k5expire. This version checks all user
accounts in an LDAP directory, looks up the associated Kerberos principals,
and checks for expiration. It does not rely on a list of users like 1.0,
which makes it easier to maintain in a large setup.

[029] - libvirt 0.2.0
  by Daniel Berrange (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpb/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 14:24

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Libvirt is a library for management of virtualized operating
systems. Initially supporting the Xen hypervisor, it provides a generic
driver backend to allow implementations for management of arbitrary
hypervisors (QEMU, UML, etc). The library aims to provide a long term
stable API to isolate applications from instability in the APIs of the
underlying virtualization technology. The core library API is written in
C, with bindings for Python and a command line tool for shell scripting
also provided. The library allows either full read-write access to the
hypervisor, or for unprivileged use a secure read-only channel (eg for
monitoring).

Changes: This release adds support for managing guests with the QEmu and
KVM virtualization platforms. It adds support for managing network
configuration. It improves regression testing, updates localization
strings, and has minor fixes in command line argument parsing.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Modem.pl is a small script that scrapes the Web interface of a
Motorola SURFboard cable modem for various status conditions like signal
strength and signal to noise ratio. The results are sent to STDOUT where
they can be easily piped into a log file. The modem values are also
checked for reasonable operating ranges. If the modem values are outside
of reasonable operating ranges, results are also sent to STDERR. When run
from a cron job, modem.pl can be used to monitor the condition of the
cable service and notify someone before conditions cause service
interruptions.

Changes: This release now supports models SB5100, SB5100E, SB5101, and
SBV5120E. The dependency on LWP::Simple was removed, so it should work out
of the box on any system that can run Perl.

About: Remo is a graphical rule editor for ModSecurity, an Apache security
module. ModSecurity is quite difficult to configure successfully.
Modsecurity.org advertises a tested core ruleset granting you protection
from most known attacks, but this is only blocks traffic known to be
dangerous, when it is more effective to block everything not known to be
safe. Remo is meant to assist in the difficult task of writing the rules
that would correctly describe the requests that are valid for an
application.

Changes: New features in the GUI include support for HTTP headers in the
remo edit window, a customizable list of default headers and default value
domains, in-place editing for all supported request properties (method,
path and headers), and labels for toolset buttons. Detailarea has been
removed. New features in the rule generator include strict checking of

class. A declaration protocol syntax is used to define what can be done
(primitive/complex actions). Using a Python CLI, the robot can be
interactively controlled and dynamically programmed. While the bot is
performing several actions, every piece of information is able to produce
events, thanks to the event declaration syntax. Events can also be created
from other events (cascading events), conditionnaly triggered under
specific conditions (pre-condition), and activate user-defined actions
(post-conditions) according to a particular event state. The library
provides detailed instructions to build electronic boards (PIC-based) and

  by Daniel Berrange (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpb/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 14:26

System :: Systems Administration

About: The Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager for short) is a desktop
application for managing virtual machines. Since it uses libvirt, it is
capable of managing machines from any hypervisor supported by libvirt. Xen
is the current primary target. The application's views provide summaries
and detailed statistics on performance and resource utilization. A wizard
facilitates creation of new guest domains, both para-virtualized and
fully-virtualized. Console access is enabled either to a text based serial
console or fully graphical access via an embedded VNC client.

Changes: This release adds support for managing virtual machines running
under the QEMU or KVM virtualization platforms. It has a workaround for
the 'dual cursor' problem in the guest console by grabbing the pointer and
hiding the local cursor. The progress feedback display when installing new
guest virtual machines has been improved.

[058] - watchdog 5.3
  by Michael Meskes (http://freshmeat.net/users/meskes/)
  Thu, Feb 22nd 2007 05:10

About: The Linux kernel can reset the system if serious problems are
detected. This can be implemented via special watchdog hardware, or via a
slightly less reliable software-only watchdog inside the kernel. Either
way, there needs to be a daemon that tells the kernel the system is
working fine. If the daemon stops doing that, the system is reset.
watchdog is such a daemon. It opens /dev/watchdog, and keeps writing to it
often enough to keep the kernel from resetting, at least once per minute.
Each write delays the reboot time another minute. After a minute the
watchdog hardware will cause the reset. In the case of a software
watchdog, the ability to reboot will depend on the state of the machines
and interrupts.

Changes: Parsing of the ping-count option was fixed. That nasty ping
problem was fixed. A problem in which intervals were 50% too long was
fixed. More bugs were fixed. The outstanding problems with wd_keepalive
were hopefully fixed. Some documentation about return values of the test
binary was added.

About: Webswell Connect is an e-business integration framework based on
the ebXML standard. It allows easy, interactive and user-friendly
installation. It consists of an ebXML registry/repository server and
client, a messaging system for secure and reliable messaging and user
interface similar to popular email clients for sending/handling ebXML
messages. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and email communication while keeping
it safe and reliable by implementing digital signatures, encryption,
acknowledgment mechanisms, duplication elimination, etc.

Changes: This release adds an installation panel to check and select JDK,
files for omar development, email settings for Hermes 2 server, and a
generator of payload and control files (CtrlFileGen). This utility can
simulate real traffic of business documents among nodes. Compatibility
with Sun JWSDP 1.6 has been increased. Support has been added for Windows
services for Tomcat. Dispatcher 1.1.1 has improved error handling. There
is a major bugfix for Windows systems.
