[001] - AjaxStub 0.2.0
  by Carl J. Nobile (http://freshmeat.net/users/cnobile/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 21:29

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The AjaxStub package provides a Python API for writing Web pages
that include JavaScript stubs for Python functions or methods. The data
returned from the server can be embedded in either JSON or XML.

Changes: A separate JavaScript file is now used instead of pushing the
entire AJAX code into the page. The Python code now supports writing your
public API in a class. The JavaScript AjaxStub object no longer needs to
be instantiated as it now uses closures and auto instantiates when loaded.
A PDF document explaining the entire API for both the Python and JavaScript
code can now be downloaded. There is also HTML documentation at the site.

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent. It also supports Metalink version 3.0.

Changes: This release adds netrc support, user configuration file support,
the ability to change user-agent, and the ability to resume downloading a
partially downloaded file by other programs that download files
sequentially from the beginning. Numerous improvements and bugfixes have
also been made.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor, similar to the
top command. At regular intervals, it shows system-level activity related
to the CPU, memory, swap, disks and network layers, and it shows for every
active process the CPU utilization in system and user mode, the virtual and
resident memory growth, priority, username, state, and exit code. The
process level activity is also shown for processes which finished during
the last interval, to get a complete overview about the consumers of
things such as CPU time. Atop only shows the active system-resources and
processes, and only shows the deviations since the previous interval.

Changes: Unformatted output can be produced to do further processing via
scripts. Steal-percentage and disk-counters are supported for virtual
machines. The scripts for daily logging have been improved. More than
65535 processes can be logged per interval now. Standard disk I/O
statistics per process will be shown (in Linux kernel 2.6.20 and higher).

[010] - C-Pluff 0.1.2
  by Johannes Lehtinen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jlehtine/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 04:16

Software Development :: Libraries

About: C-Pluff is a plug-in framework for C programs. It has been strongly
inspired by the Java plug-in framework in Eclipse. C-Pluff focuses on
providing core services for plug-in interaction and plug-in management. It
aims to be platform neutral and supports dynamic changes to plug-in
configuration without stopping the whole application or framework. It does
not yet provide special facilities for distribution such as signed plug-in
packages or remote plug-in repositories, but it is possible to build such
features on top of the current framework.

Changes: This release includes some bugfixes to the library,
documentation, build system, and Debian packaging. It also includes
support for internationalization which was accidentally left out from the
previous release. Library and documentation bugs related to the handling
of plug-in dependency loops were fixed. Installation now includes example
source code and a stand-alone build environment for the example
application.

[011] - CacheGuard OS 3.3.0b
  by Afshin Tajvidi (http://freshmeat.net/users/tajflow/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 10:35

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security

About: CacheGuard is a Linux-based operating system dedicated to Web
traffic control and optimization. It transforms an x86-based machine into
a powerful, affordable Web gateway appliance. It allows you to control all
Web traffic that passes through a CacheGuard appliance. It proxies HTTP,
HTTPS, and FTP. It supports HTTP transparent implementation, HTTP
compression methods, caching technologies, and user-defined URL black- and
whitelists. It features a stateful firewall with NAT and PAT. It integrates
a caching DNS, a bandwidth shaper to manage the QoS, a load sharing system,
and an HA (high availability) mode with VRRP. A command line interface
allows you to configure the appliance easily. SSH-based and secure
Web-based administration interfaces are also provided.

Changes: A VRRP IP address could be associated with the external network
interface (useful for incoming connections via the external network
interface, crossing the embedded firewall and destined to internal
networks). Access to the embedded DNS is allowed. In HA mode, if the
health checker cannot restart all vital services properly, a failover is
forced. The forced failover is logged in the daemon.log log file. The
administration Web Interface is available via the embedded Proxy only when
the VLAN mode is deactivated.

[016] - ESTScan 3.0.2
  by Christian Iseli (http://freshmeat.net/users/c4chris/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 01:41

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: ESTScan is a program that can detect coding regions in DNA
sequences, even if they are of low quality. ESTScan will also detect and
correct sequencing errors that lead to frameshifts. It is not a gene
prediction program, nor is it an open reading frame detector. In fact, its
strength lies in the fact that it does not require an open reading frame to
detect a coding region. As a result, the program may miss a few translated
amino acids at either the N or the C terminus, but will detect coding
regions with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Changes: A bug has been found and fixed in the BTLib package. The bug
prevented the extract_mRNA script from the estscan package from
functioning properly when parsing RefSeq sequences. The prepare_data
script has also been fixed to properly report the percent of masked
nucleotides. All users preparing score matrices for ESTScan are strongly
encouraged to update. Updating is less important for people who only scan
sequences with already existing matrices.

[017] - eventxx 0.4
  by Leandro Lucarella (http://freshmeat.net/users/llucax/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 10:33

Software Development :: Libraries

About: eventxx is a simple, direct, one-header inline C++ wrapper for
libevent. It's just one header file, so using it is just a matter of
copying it into a project. It's designed to be as close to using libevent
as possible without compromising modern C++ programming techniques and as
efficient as possible. Since all implementation is trivial and inline, it
theoretically imposes no overhead at all.

Changes: This release fixes infinite recursion when using operator| for
eventxx::type. Using 0.3 is extremely discouraged.

About: Genetic Algorithm File Fitter (gaffitter) is a command-line tool
that uses a genetic algorithm to extract subsets of an input list of files
and directories that best fit a given volume size such as a CD or DVD. This
is used to find different combinations of the files on the list such that
lost space will be minimized.

Changes: This release fixes a bug regarding an uninitialized variable and
changes the default behavior of GAFFitter, which now extracts the volumes
as much as possible (with unlimited iterations).

About: Kanatest is a Japanese kana (hiragana and katakana) simple
flashcard tool. It offers fourteen lessons and three drill modes:
hiragana, katakana, and mixed mode. The tool displays randomly selected
kana characters (respecting mode and lesson) and waits for the user answer
(expected as the romaji equivalent). This process continues until all
questions are answered or all questions are answered correctly (depending
on options). At the end of test, information about drilling time and
correctness ratio is displayed. The results are stored, and a user can
review his performance at any time.

Changes: The characters "di, du" and "ji, zu" are both accepted during the
test. The following auxilary buttons for the lesson customization dialog
have been added: select all, select none, and invert selection.

  by Gerd Kortemeyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/korte/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 21:28

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: Installing this release should result in considerable speedups
for the parameter setting screen in courses that use published sequences
of resources. The release also fixes a problem with grading the 10th
bubble in a 10 choice bubblesheet question. Automated enrollment update
messages work again, metadata-tags with "_" in their name work correctly,
and encrypted URLs are supported in tasks that have scheduled time slots.
Enhancements include the support for polar plots in resources that use
GnuPlot.

  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 01:10

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat and mpstat,
commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. The sadf command may be used to display data collected by sar
in various formats (XML, database-friendly, etc.). The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
mpstat command reports global and per-processor statistics. The
information collected by sar can be saved in a file in a binary format for
future inspection. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP and SMP machines are
fully supported.

Changes: A bug that happened when sar tried to read a datafile created
while a least one processor in a hotplug CPU system was disabled was
fixed. Support for keeping sar logfiles for more than one month was
improved. The new variable "conf_dir" now enables the user to specify a
sysstat configuration directory (this variable is used by "configure").
The "--enable-compress-manpg" option was added to "configure" to enable
the user to compress manual pages during installation. isag (Interactive
System Activity Grapher) was improved.

  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 03:52

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.

Changes: This version comes with many bugfixes, better Spring IoC
integration, support for constructor injection on interceptors, and an
option to disable auto-loading.

About: Wacom ExpressKeys supports the fairly recent additions of
ExpressKeys, Touch Strips, and a Scroll Wheel on certain Wacom tablets.
Specifically the Cintiq 21UX Interactive Pen Display, the Intuos3, and the
Graphire4 tablets are supported through the XInput and XTest extensions in
X. Using "xsetwacom", it can also provide an automatic change of stylus
pressure sensitivity (a.k.a. PressCurve) when going from one program
window to the next. This feature is independent of the connected tablet
model. A graphical configuration tool named "wacom-config" is under
development.

Changes: This version has a slightly improved logic for Touch Strip
movement detection, a minor bugfix related to long filenames of the
executable, and two compatibility changes to prevent future breakage in
relation to upstream code.

  by Ken Webb (http://freshmeat.net/users/kenwebb/)
  Wed, Mar 28th 2007 07:19

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The Xholon runtime framework executes applications that are
event-driven or that have highly dynamic structure or behavior. You
specify your models using XML and Java, or using third-party UML 2.0 tools
and MDA transformations. It is based on the Real-Time Object-Oriented
Modeling (ROOM) approach, UML 2.0 composite structure with ports, and
finite state machines.

Changes: Several new domains are supported, including turtle geometry with
limited NetLogo-like syntax, 1D cellular automata, and simple dynamical
systems with numerical integration. UML state machine simulation
capabilities have been enhanced. Grid or swarm models can be created in
UML. Xholon can transform MagicDraw 12.0 models. The core library is
compatible with Java ME (MIDP). Each class can specify which Java class
implements it. Numerous other modeling, simulation, transformation and
execution features have been added.
