Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware
About: amforth is an embedded Forth distribution for the the AVR Atmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It is ANS94 Forth oriented. It is
written in assembly language and Forth itself. The main development uses
Atmega8 and Atmega32 controllers; other Atmega controllers work with small
adjustments.
Changes: This release fixes some bugs and introduces a few more words. A
reference card has been added. Some controller types have been removed for
now; with a little modification, they will work again.

[005] - Apache SpamAssassin 3.2.0 (Stable)
by Justin Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmason/)
Wed, May 2nd 2007 09:23
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
About: Apache SpamAssassin is an extensible email filter that is used to
identify spam. Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as
spam for later filtering. It provides a command line tool to perform
filtering, a client-server system to filter large volumes of mail, and
Mail::SpamAssassin, a set of Perl modules allowing Apache SpamAssassin to
be used in a wide variety of email systems.
Changes: Short-circuiting of "definite ham" or "definite spam" messages
based on rules was added. Charset normalization was added, so rules can be
written in UTF-8 to match text in other charsets. "sa-compile" was added to
compile SpamAssassin rules into a fast parallel-matching DFA. "tflags
multiple" was added, which allows rules that count multiple hits in a
single message. "whitelist_auth" was added to whitelist addresses that
send mail using sender-authorization systems like SPF, Domain Keys, and
DKIM. Mail::SpamAssassin::Spamd::Apache2 provides spamd as a mod_perl
module.

[010] - boxtream 0.996
by Jerome Alet (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalet/)
Wed, May 2nd 2007 05:21
Communications :: Conferencing
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
About: Boxtream is both an audio and video encoder and streamer and an
assembly of audio and video hardware, forming a mobile video streaming
studio. It is designed to easily record and stream live presentations
including a presenter and synchronized slides, or slides only, or
presenter only, and was built to stream live courses over the Internet for
distance learning students. It supports and autodetects several brands and
models of video switchers. It can be entirely controlled remotely over
XML-RPC, and includes an X11 interface built with wxWidgets. By default,
it supports five different streaming and recording scenarios. The software
can still be used without most of the hardware included in the original
boxtream project.
Changes: This is the first release where the minimal hardware requirement
is a single firewire device (e.g. a simple camcorder), making third party
uses and contributions possible even from people without expensive
hardware. A problem which prevented audio-only streaming was fixed. Users
can now easily create their own streaming and recording scenarios. Basic
support for Axis 24XX cameras servers as switcher's inputs controllers is
included, but currently not documented. The video balance now only
controls one side when a two-sides scenario is used.

Wed, May 2nd 2007 10:41
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: CacheGuard is a Linux-based operating system dedicated to Web
traffic control and optimization. It transforms an x86-based machine into
a powerful, affordable Web gateway appliance. It allows you to control all
Web traffic that passes through a CacheGuard appliance. It proxies HTTP,
HTTPS, and FTP. It supports HTTP transparent implementation, HTTP
compression methods, caching technologies, and user-defined URL black- and
whitelists. It features a stateful firewall with NAT and PAT. It integrates
a caching DNS, a DHCP server, a bandwidth shaper to manage the QoS, a load
sharing system, and an HA (high availability) mode with VRRP. A command
line interface allows you to configure the appliance easily. SSH-based and
secure Web-based administration interfaces are also provided.
Changes: The certificate generation procedure for the Web administration
interface supports white spaces in entries. The alter image mode is no
longer supported. The core proxy module has changed. Time & Date can be
set up properly by using the Web Administration GUI. The log rotation
procedure properly deletes logs older than 10 days (or with a serial
number greater than 10).

Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cairo is a vector graphics library with cross-device output
support. It currently supports the X Window System and in-memory image
buffers as output targets. It is designed to produce identical output on
all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration
when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). It provides a
stateful user-level API with capabilities similar to the PDF 1.4 imaging
model and provides operations including stroking and filling Bezier cubic
splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased
text rendering.
Changes: Internal error handling was cleaned up, allowing for a reduced
number of calls to malloc(). Some broken composite operations were fixed.
Performance optimizations were made. Some fixes were made to the the xlib
and to the Quartz/ATSUI backends. Native gradients, better viewer
compatibility, as well as CFF and TrueType font embedding were implemented
for the PDF backend.

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.
Changes: Error messages in DtraceDiff were improved and a bug in Daikon

(7x-20x), more support for reports, and W3C compliance of generated
HTML/CSS reports. It can be used to help control traffic usage, to control
Internet access security policies, to investigate security incidents, to
evaluate server efficiency, and to detect troubles with configuration.
Changes: Real-time reporting via a provided Web CGI has been added; see
the rtr_timeout option. There are speed improvements for installations
with many users. Some code cleanup has been done.

Wed, May 2nd 2007 10:36
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: GTK Photo Gallery is an album to manage small and medium-sized
photograph collections. It allows quick management by processing multiple
files together. Rotate, delete, move, and manage descriptions can be done
for all files in one directory at once. It is possible to upload pictures
to an online laboratory to order prints. GTK Photo Gallery is implemented
with GTK2-Perl, and due to the lack of a Web server in between, it is much
faster than CGI-based scripts. It uses the same directory structure as
(and can be used together with) My Photo Gallery (a set of CGI scripts).
It is possible to export (and import) an Album into 700 MB large parts for
easy CD backup, including static HTML pages to navigate the CD. This can
also be used to create a simple album for the Web.
Changes: This is the first beta release. UTF-8 encoding was rewritten. It
is possible to display and edit JPEG comments (for one directory at a
time). The EXIF Image Orientation Tag is recognized.

About: USBauth is a module for PAM allowing end-users to locally
authenticate via USB storage devices. USBAuth currently supports
user-dependent authentication via password-hashing as well as
one-time-password mechanisms, which make the verification process via
USB-dongles much more secure. In addition, USBAuth comes with USB device
serial checking support, so attackers won't be able to grab and copy your
device easily (if this is the case, the device will be rejected).
Changes: USBAuth now comes with enhanced configuration options, the
usbauthd daemon which takes notice of plugging and unplugging devices
bound to certain USB serials, and may execute predefined actions (e.g.
locking sessions or unmounting partitions where sensitive data is stored).
One-time-password support and device ID binding is included. A couple of

It features automatic leak detection, powerful tools for the analysis of
memory distribution, an object heap browser, comprehensive memory tests as
part of your JUnit testing process, extremely low profiling overhead,
transparent deobfuscation support, and integration with Eclipse, JBuilder,
IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, and JDeveloper IDEs.
Changes: IntelliJ IDEA 7.0-M1 is supported. It's now possible to filter
information in "Memory Profiling" telemetry by class name. A crash during
memory snapshot capturing with IBM Java was fixed. The ability to compare
arbitrary memory snapshots was implemented.
