Other/Nonlisted Topic
System :: Hardware

About: Gizmo Daemon is a program for controlling your computer based on
events from input devices. It has built-in support for all Linux input
devices, including keyboards with special keys, joysticks, remotes, dials,
and more. It lets you control applications, launch programs, change the
system volume, switch desktops, and directly control Amarok. It can
visualize system events (such as Amarok sound output, CPU usage, etc.) on
capable devices (keyboards with LEDs, Griffin PowerMate, etc.). It also
features support for LIRC and RF based remote controls, allowing it to
have per-application key mappings and configurable sensitivity settings.

Changes: A new visualization API allows all events to be visualized on the
keyboard LEDs as well as other visualization capable devices (such as the
Griffin PowerMate), so now everyone can visualize Amarok sound output and
CPU usage on their keyboard LEDs. Also new is a Remote Control mode which
allows Gizmod to fully control one computer with another. There are
several bugfixes present as well.

[028] - LFT 3.0
  by vostrom (http://freshmeat.net/users/oppleman/)
  Thu, May 17th 2007 11:13

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: LFT (Layer Four Traceroute) is a sort of "traceroute" that often
works much faster than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method and goes
through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. More
importantly, LFT implements numerous other features, including TCP, UDP,
or ICMP-based traces, AS number lookups through several reliable sources,
loose source routing, netblock name lookups, and more. LFT also
distinguishes between layer-4 protocols, which make its statistics
slightly more realistic, and gives a savvy user the ability to trace
protocol routes, not just layer-3 hops.

Changes: Improved TCP and UDP traces. A new ICMP tracing method, including
RFC1393 capabilities. A new TCP Basic trace method that works in NAT'd

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: LGSP (the Little GNU Site Preparer) is an environment for creating
the initial version of a site. You write your wishes into the LGSP
configuration file, and you are not only able to determine the whole
logical structure but also the outfit of your site. By evaluating this
configuration file LGSP automatically generates all demanded files of your
site, and these pages already respect the wished visual design. For
generating and editing such configuration files, LGSP also offers a full
elaborated WYSIWYHC HTML frontend (What You See Is What You Have
Configured).

Changes: Updates were done to make lgsp usable with Ubuntu, PHP5, and the
new UTF-8 handling.

mechanisms, CSS based templates, and statistically normalized user
rankings, MetaForum is a fresh, fast, efficient, and completely new
perspective on forums and message boards.

Changes: The user interface was completely redesigned. Major portions of
the SQL backend were redesigned and optimized. More admin controls were
added. The threshold viewing controls have been redesigned. Several bugs
were fixed. Existing users are urged to do full backups of existing

About: Sambascan2 allows you to search an entire network or a number of

that it finds. The difference between sambascan2 and other SMB viewers and
scanners is that it will scan everything using TCP/IP, and it will not send
a lot of broadcast messages, so it can be used over LAN boundaries. It only
uses Samba to scan the shares and their contents. It can also scan known

[045] - The Epeios XML preprocessor 0.2.1 (2007-05-17)
  by Claude SIMON (http://freshmeat.net/users/epeios/)
  Thu, May 17th 2007 11:18

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Utilities

About: The "expp" tool (the Epeios XML preprocessor) reads an XML file to
transform it to another XML file. It simplifies the writing of XML files
by allowing the handling of macros, the definition and testing of
variables, the inclusion of files, and more. This is done by writing,
directly in the source XML file, predefined tags owned by a given
namespace, tags which are then recognized and handled by the "expp" tool.

Changes: This version fixes two bugs. The first is about a missing error
message when a nesting overflow occurs. The second is about the inclusion
of a file, with relative path, from an included file; the base directory
is now the one of the included file, and no longer the one of the first
file.

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release improves pattern matching and mathematical
transformation rules by allowing patterns to match arbitrary functions.
There is a new "symbolic mode" which suppresses some types of errors that
would be desirable when running normal programs. An experimental
standalone Windows executable is now available. In addition, there are
several new options available for formatting numerical values.

About: Xapian is a search engine library, scalable to collections
containing hundreds of millions of documents. It's written in C++ with
bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. It is a highly
adaptable toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also a rich set of boolean
query operators. Omega is a Web search application built upon the Xapian
library. It can index a Web server's document tree (including HTML, PDF,
OpenOffice, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Works, WordPerfect, RTF, PS, etc.),
or data exported from arbitrary sources (e.g. SQL databases).

Changes: This release features Unicode support, updated stemming
algorithms (with new languages: Hungarian, Romanian, and Turkish), a new
and improved indexing strategy, improvements to the remote backend (which
now supports all backend features and works on MS Windows), new
QueryParser features (ranges, pure NOT queries, support for incremental
searches), and major enhancements to the Python bindings. Flint supports
using zlib to compress tags in the record and termlist trees, and is now
the default backend. The documentation has also been improved.
