  Sat, May 19th 2007 16:56

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Cibyl is a programming environment that allows compiled C programs
to execute on J2ME-capable phones. Cibyl uses GCC to compile the C
programs to MIPS binaries, and these are then recompiled into Java
bytecode. The programs are not parsed during runtime, and Cibyl is
therefore relatively well-performing. With Cibyl, games written in C can
be ported to J2ME without switching language.

Changes: A bug was fixed in the interface where System.currentTimeMillis()
returned a 32-bit value, which caused wrap-around problems. Some C++
library improvements (operator::new etc.) were made for initial C++
support.

  Sat, May 19th 2007 02:04

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Jif (Java + information flow) is a security-typed programming
language that extends Java with support for information flow control and
access control, both at compile time and at run time. Static information
flow control can protect the confidentiality and integrity of information
manipulated by computing systems. The compiler tracks the correspondence
between information the policies that restrict its use, enforcing security
properties end-to-end within the system. After checking information flow
within Jif programs, the Jif compiler translates them to Java programs and
uses an ordinary Java compiler to produce secure executable programs.

  by Michael Brunner (http://freshmeat.net/users/mibrunner/)
  Sat, May 19th 2007 17:43

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
System

About: Logapp is a wrapper utility that helps supervise the execution of
applications that produce heavy console output (e.g. make, CVS, and
Subversion). It does this by logging, trimming, and coloring each line of
the output before displaying it. It can be called instead of the
executable that should be monitored; it then starts the application and
logs all of its console output to a file. The output shown in the terminal
is preprocessed, e.g. to limit the length of printed lines and to show the
stderr output in a different color. It is also possible to automatically
highlight lines that match a certain regular expression. The output is
therefore reduced to the necessary amount, and all important lines are
easy to identify.

Changes: The main changes for this release are the addition of options for
logfile size limiting and optional millisecond timestamps for logged lines.
Additionally, a manpage describing all available options has been added.

About: NiX Security Scanner is a security scanner for Linux distributions.
It will try find rootkits and backdoors, and try to determine whether your
system hacked or not. It will also scan your distribution for
misconfigured daemons (services).

Changes: A regexp in hidden PID detection was changed, so now it will warn
when it really should. The SUID root check was changed to warn about any
SUID binary anywhere when it has the minimum amount of functions needed to
also be a backdoor. Function and variable definitions were moved into
conf/NiX.init. A configuration file was added into conf/nix.conf. The
check for a new version is off by default. Full ext2/ext3 filesystem
debugging was added. This method will detect nearly any kernel level
rootkit that is using hidden files. This was tested with SuckIt v2 and

Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, NTsyslog, Pam, Portsentry, Postfix,
Proftpd, SSH, and others. It is part of Prelude, a hybrid Intrusion
Detection framework implementing an open communication layer for use by
any security application.

Changes: The ability to use regular expressions in plugins.rules to define
monitored sources was added. This can be very useful when combined to file
globbing. When the "*" keyword is used, the data is passed to the upper
layer without trying to match anything. A problem with handling of empty
context was fixed. The log parser was made more robust.

[032] - rdup 0.5.0
  by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
  Sat, May 19th 2007 02:14

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.
Auxilary script that implement a backup strategy are included.

Changes: All utilities are now installed in /usr/bin. The incremental dump
algorithm was extended to allow better detection of directory renaming. A
number of scripts was removed from the archive: rdup-mirror, rdup-dump,
and rdup-snapshot.
