  Mon, May 21st 2007 14:24

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the
NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according
to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP
is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most
functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the
advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.

Changes: This is mostly a bugfix release, but added features include new
configuration options related to Winlist and Balloons.

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Aubit 4GL compiler is a project to make a free Informix-4GL
compatible compiler. It translates 4GL source into executable programs,
enabling fast creation of screen/form-based applications. With support for
SQL statements forming an intrinsic part of the language, it's especially
suitable for developing database-oriented applications. Database
connectivity is provided for PostgreSQL, Informix, and ODBC. It supports
both ncurses (console mode) and GTK+ (GUI mode) output.

Changes: Many small bugfixes, AACE compiler improvements, ports to Intel
Solaris and Mac OS X, and an HTML target for logical reports.

[004] - Bacula 2.1.10 (Development)
  by Lev_Arris (http://freshmeat.net/users/LevArris/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 03:32

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.

Changes: This release features performance enhancements for backups
(faster insertion of attributes into catalog, use of posix_fadvise() in
the FD) and restores (memory tree optimizations), a Bacula Administration
Tool, heartbeat for all connections (untested), and improved volume
reservation code that should eliminate most conflicts experienced in
multiple drive auto-changers. New features include detection of file
size/date change during backup (if enabled) and a 'Recycle Pool' feature.
Volume Pruning is now more efficient and pruned volumes are
discovered/reusable immediately.

[005] - BeanKeeper 2.3.0.2
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 05:11

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: BeanKeeper (formerly Simple Persistence for Java) is a full
featured, powerful object/relational persistence and query library. It has
a unique philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require
config files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind
of tools to be used. It handles simple Java beans (or POJOs) and its query
service returns lists. Despite its simpleness, under the hood the library
takes care of all the necessary logic: transaction visibility, result list
paging, keys and ids, table creation/modification, class relations,
inheritance/polymorphism, case sensitiveness, and much more. It currently
supports: Oracle, HSQLDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Changes: Memory leak issues were fixed. A sub-millisecond serial
resolution bug was fixed. The HSQLDB driver was fixed to create tables
with the 'cached' property.

[006] - Bitgate Server Software Environment 0.3.5
  by Ken Hollis (http://freshmeat.net/users/Tsuichi1/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 03:24

Internet

About: Bitgate Server Software Environment aims to build a multi-protocol
environment in which server protocol handlers can be eventually loaded and
unloaded on the fly using a center console or controller Web page. It aims
to have 99.9% uptime, and have high-availability (Java 6) compliance. It
is written in Java 5, and relies completely on Java's I/O functionality to
provide non-blocking support for both SSL and non-SSL sockets
(transparently). All configuration is done via XML files, as this is
easier to maintain. It includes a minimal demonstration HTTP server.

Changes: A couple of classes were fixed by removing parameterized
variables. Insecure/secure socket classes were refactored with an
abstracted implementation. More threading issues were fixed and a couple
of structural changes were made to Service code.

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Software Development

About: BitRock InstallBuilder allows you to create easy-to-use
multiplatform installers for Linux (x86/PPC/s390/x86_64/Itanium), Windows,
Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris (x86/Sparc), IRIX, AIX, and HP-UX applications.
The generated application installers have a native look-and-feel and no
external dependencies, and can be run in GUI, text, and unattended modes.
In addition to self-contained installers, the installation tool is also
able to generate standalone RPM packages.

Changes: Upgrade installers will now track files added/removed and update
the uninstaller appropriately. License parameters can now correctly handle
relative file paths. The RPM progress meter when packaging file links was
fixed. Java auto-detection can now specifically require a JDK.

[009] - check_logfiles 2.1
  by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 10:59

System :: Diagnostics
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.

Changes: This release adds support for native Windows with ActiveState
Perl. It adds the --selectedsearches Option. mod_log_rotate has been added
to the predefined rotation methods.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It's
scalable, easy to create, and fast to search. It features a built-in
database crawler following user-defined SQL, incremental indexing,
user-controllable result ranking, the ability to return results with
highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts (like Amazon). It
can easily integrate with a non-Java environment with XML/JSON. There is a
UI for all operations, so no Java coding is necessary.

Changes: Synonyms were added. Multiple keywords were added, with support
for displaying a tag cloud in search results. JRuby support for indexing
was added. Faster adding indexes is always used without merging. Bulk
deletion of old documents is now much faster. Copying in a Linux
environment is faster. Deleted documents are discovered with efficient use
of memory. JDK was upgraded to 1.5. The query parser was fixed: the
analyzer was applied twice. An index file uploading error from Windows to
Linux systems was fixed.

About: DrScheme is a graphical environment for developing programs using
the Scheme, MzScheme, and MrEd programming languages. DrScheme runs under
Windows 95/98/NT, MacOS, and Unix/X. DrScheme's features include source
text highlighting of syntax and run-time errors, support for multiple
levels of Scheme from beginner to advanced, an algebraic stepper for the
beginner language, interactive and graphical static analysis, a graphical
user interface (GUI) library, objects, threads, modules, exceptions,
TCP/IP, regular expressions, and filesystem support.

Changes: The conservative GC has been replaced with a precise one in the
standard build. DrScheme saves language and teachpack information for
student languages; teachpacks are not supported on other languages. The
HtDP "world.ss" and "image.ss" teachpacks have been revised, including
support for the creation of animated GIFs. Unit-based servlets are no
longer supported in the Web server. Module-based servlets are used
instead. A new (lib "unit.ss") library replaces the old one and provides a

[031] - gpgdir 1.1
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 20:47

Security :: Cryptography

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.

Changes: The ability to securely delete the original versions of files
with the 'wipe' program after they have been successfully encrypted was
added. A --Force option that causes gpgdir to skip over the error
condition where a file cannot be deleted (because of a permissions issue,
for example) was added. A --Trial-run option was added to allow the user
to see what actions gpgdir would take to encrypt or decrypt files, but no
files are actually modified. --Interactive causes gpgdir to prompt the
user before every file is encrypted or decrypted. A gpgdir.SlackBuild
script was included for Slackware systems.

[035] - honeytrap 0.7.0
  by Tillmann Werner (http://freshmeat.net/users/honeytrap/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 03:47

Security
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Honeytrap is a network security tool written to observe attacks
against TCP services. As a low-interactive honeypot, it collects
information regarding known or unknown network-based attacks and thus can
provide early-warning information. The daemon monitors the network stream
for incoming connections and dynamically starts server processes if it
detects a request to an unbound port. Honeytrap can also be set up as a
meta honeypot that forwards several attacks to other systems or, in mirror
mode, redirects a connection back to the initiator. Several plugins are
available for automated attack analysis.

Changes: This release introduces priorities for plugins, a
nfnetlink_queue-based network stream monitor, and SHA512 hashing support.
Other changes include lots of fixes and performance improvements. The
compile process should now be more stable.

[045] - MicroNova YUZU 20070520
  by MicroNova (http://freshmeat.net/users/mnagata/)
  Mon, May 21st 2007 03:23

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: MicroNova YUZU is an EL-based JSP tag library designed to augment
JSTL and transform JSP into a powerful XML-style "scripting language"
(compatible with both JSP 1.2 and 2.0). Features include: stackable
(nestable beyond tagfile boundaries) tags, nestable/encodable map with
XML/JSON support, "codec" functions, structured param with file
upload/select/radio support, "subroutine" call returning non-string
Object, dynamic embedded EL pattern evaluation for regular text and SQL
queries, HTTP client and response control, an HTML-to-DOM parser,
multipart email and mailbox, dynamic method
invocation/iterator/map/resource message map, and more. All YUZU tags
follow a single behavioral pattern (prepare, import, default, process,
assign, export) for ease of learning and extension.

Changes: "bodyProperty" support was moved back to m:map. Copying of null
values in NestedMap was made consistent with the put operation. NestedMap
now returns itself on setting of special properties. Support for root
pageContext was added to "JSP:getCallStack" by the
"JSP:setRootPageContext" codec. Variable list support was added to the
"JSP:getAttributes" codec and a "_JSP:getPageScope" codec was added for
accessing outer pageScope variables in tagfiles. A "Type:clone" codec was
added. "Type:isString" now works without javamail libraries.
"Type:isStringList" now accepts arrays. Support for "build.properties" and
"jarfile" was added to build.xml.

About: poker-eval is a C library to evaluate poker hands. The result of
the evaluation for a given hand is a number. The general idea is that if
the evalution of your hand is lower than the evaluation of the hand of
your opponent, you lose. Many poker variants are supported (Draw, Holdem,
Omaha, etc.) and more can be added. It is designed for speed so that it
can be used within poker simulation software using either exhaustive
exploration or Monte Carlo.

About: The SirBot Project provides an easy way to build, program, control,
and monitor amateur robots. Programming a bot is done writing a Python
class. A declaration protocol syntax is used to define what can be done
(primitive/complex actions). Using a Python CLI, the robot can be
interactively controlled and dynamically programmed. While the bot is
performing several actions, every piece of information is able to produce
events, thanks to the event declaration syntax. Events can also be created
from other events (cascading events), conditionnaly triggered under
specific conditions (pre-condition), and activate user-defined actions
(post-conditions) according to a particular event state. The library
provides detailed instructions to build electronic boards (PIC-based) and
connect them to build a robot.

Changes: Either the robot or PC can initiate the communication
(Master/Slave vs. Peer-to-Peer mode). Recurrent tasks can be defined as
background jobs (polling the bot, etc.). There is a dedicated Web site,
documentation, and many fixes in Jal libraries.
