[001] - Advchk 2.00
by Stephan Schmieder (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssc_/)

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring
About: Advchk is a tool for monitoring the security of installed software.
Advisory Check gathers security advisories using RSS/RDF/XML feeds,
compares them against a list of known software, and alerts you if you're
vulnerable. Since adding software lists by hand would be quite a boring
task, advchk leverages your system's package manager for detecting
software. Software installed on remote systems can be monitored through
nmap scans or by executing the remote package manager as an SSH
ForcedCommand using Public-key authentication.
Changes: This release delivers massive speedups in the networking area
(SSH, nmap, HTTP), a -p switch, four new feeds for advchk-addfeeds.sh, and
some code polishing.

Desktop Environment
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: AntiRight provides gtkshell, an interface for scripting a GUI.
Around this interface, applications can be defined at the command line.
This allows rapid application development, leaving the developer to focus
on core application logic. Also included are ACE, a sample desktop
implementation, and gshterm, a vte-based terminal emulator with
transparency, anti-aliased fonts, and xterm-compatible command
specification.
Changes: gtkshell now builds on Cygwin. The style 3 deskbar menu has been
updated according to freedesktop.org guidelines. boehm-gc garbage
collection is used if available. VTE presence is determined at configure
time, and gtkshell can be built without it, but with reduced
functionality. The IDE terminal areas are now resizable. A text editor has
been added. An application mode has been added. Special passed commands are
now used to allow for callback specification. A clock applet has been added
to reduce fork overhead for the desk bar.

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
About: Cobras is a programming environment for Qt, and is written in Qt
itself. It has an integrated debugger (as a front-end for GDB), and is
very functional and helpful. It is fast and easy to use. It consists of
one binary file (plus an icon for the desktop). It does not create its own
files when working with a project, but uses only the original '.pro' file.
Changes: The ability to run commands or programs (as many as you would
like) before and after building the project was implemented. Commands
which can start before may include the following wildcards: %c for the cpp
file of the project and %h for the header files of project. Commands which
can start after may include only one wildcard: %p for program name. Every
possible wildcard can be present many times in one command. A few changes
were made in the "Build" window which presents current process output.

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than

galleries. This allows you to host dynamic galleries on servers without
scripting support, or on local filesystems (e.g. CD-ROMs).

all from one convenient interface. It is very similar to Democracy TV, but
focuses on KDE integration, using KHTMLPart and embedded players such as
kaffeine. It's much faster and lighter on resources if you run a KDE
desktop without GTK apps. Installation is easy as long as your
distribution has PyKDE and PyQt.

About: LLnextgen is a (partial) reimplementation of the LLgen
Extended-LL(1) parser generator that is part of the Amsterdam Compiler Kit
(ACK). It takes an EBNF-like description of the grammar with associated
semantic actions in C as input, and generates C code. The generated code
is strict ANSI C, so it should compile with all current C compilers.
Changes: This release adds a new operator for specifying an optional-final
repetition. This is useful for implementing grammar rules like C99/C++
enums where a comma after the last constant is allowed, but not required.

[027] - MirBSD Korn Shell R29f
by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
Sat, May 26th 2007 22:12
System :: Shells
About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with primary focus on scripting. It is intended to be
portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well
as bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS and FreeWRT projects.
The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte Order Marks
are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well as all
pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible with
the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits, but you can turn off brace
expansion), has no limit on array sizes, and incorporates some other
useful builtins and features. While being already fast and small (without
losing functionality), flags to make it even smaller can be given at
compile time. An interactive shell reads "~/.mkshrc" on startup.
Changes: This minor release fixes some function declaration detection
bugs, improves the user configuration sample file, and patches a
distressing regression introduced in R29e affecting interactive usage.

small footprint that is usable in micro-controller environments. It is
fully scalable from tiny (8-bit) to moderate embedded (32-bit) systems. It
also aims to be fully compliant to standards, to be fully real time, and to
be totally open.
Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release to correct a number of
problems introduced with the 0.2.5 release. This release does include some
FAT filesystem extensions including unlink(), mkdir(), rmdir(), rename(),
opendir(), closedir(), readdir(), seekdir(), telldir(), and rewindir().
There are some pending FAT changes that did not make it into this release,
including stat(), truncate(), and long file names.

[033] - Openchart2 1.2 RC1
by approximatrix (http://freshmeat.net/users/approximatrix/)
Sat, May 26th 2007 22:13
Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Openchart2 is a simple charting and plotting library designed for
incorporation with a variety of Java applications. The library can
generate two dimensional bar, pie, radar, and scatter charts with
customized titles, axis labels, legends, and colors. The simplicity of the
library is its strongest feature. Openchart2 is a branch of the original
JOpenChart library.
Changes: This version incorporates a new chart type, BufferedChart, which
offloads chart layout and rendering to a separate thread, freeing the main
thread from the possibility of slowdown. This new chart type is
particularly suited for GUI applications performing complex plotting and
charting. The entire rendering framework now also includes a render update
request system to support the BufferedChart type. Finally, a major bug
affecting tick mark placement on charts with numeric axes with scales
under 1.0 has been corrected.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: General
About: PHP-Sugar is an advanced template engine for PHP. It allows for
very expressive macros and flexibility and makes the writing of safe and
secure templates easy.
Changes: The HTML cache was reverted to using bytecode, as the compilation
to PHP is too difficult to secure and did not even provide any performance
advantage. Minor cleanups were made in the parser and runtime. Functions
can now be called using normal mathematical notation inside of
expressions. Other minor cleanups were made to the API and error
reporting. The file-based cache and storage drivers now use JSON if
available instead of PHP serialization for cleaner files.

[038] - Quizdrill 0.2.0
by Schmalhof (http://freshmeat.net/users/schmalhof/)
Sat, May 26th 2007 12:21
Education :: Testing
About: Quizdrill is a learning-by-testing program to quickly learn tasks
that mostly involve memorizing, like vocabulary. Quizdrill supports
multiple choice, simple quiz, and flashcard testing. Although still quite
primitive, Quizdrill asks questions which have been answered right more
often than others to improve learning efficiency. Quizzes can be easily
created by editing simple text files or can be automatically built from
Infobox-style templates of Wikipedia dumps (or other MediaWikis and even
Semantic MediaWikis).
Changes: This stable release adds the possibility to build quizzes from a
Wikipedia dump like the new quizzes deu_Oper.drill, deu_Muskelatur.drill,
and deu_Gemälde.drill. In addition, the standard setup.py packaging is now
used with eggs, rpms, and debs. The UI as been improved: most notably, the
status bar now shows the question and answer to the previously answered
question. This gives you the opportunity to review it again.
