  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 13:44

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware

About: amforth is an embedded Forth distribution for the the AVR Atmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It provides most of the ANS94 Forth
CORE plus some extensions. It is written in assembly language and Forth
itself. The main development uses Atmega8 and Atmega32 controllers; other
Atmega controllers work with small adjustments.

Changes: This release adds support for the ATmega128 controller. Other
changes include a lot of fine-tuning and some new words in the dictionary.

[006] - AutoLaTeX 5.4
  by sgalland (http://freshmeat.net/users/sgalland/)
  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 08:38

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: AutoLaTeX is a tool for managing small to large sized LaTeX
projects. The typical AutoLaTeX input file is simply a series of variable
definitions in a Makefile for the project. This Makefile was automatically
generated by a provided Perl script. The user can easily perform all
required steps to do such tasks as preview the document or produce a PDF
file. AutoLaTeX will keep track of files that have changed and how to run
the various programs that are needed to produce the output. One of the
best features of AutoLaTeX is to provide translation rules to
automatically generate the figures which will be included into the PDF.

Changes: The GTK interface would crash when the configuration is saved.
This major bug was fixed.

Software Development
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Blocks is a block-oriented graphical programming language.
Programming is simply a matter of dragging and dropping blocks. Blocks can
be used as an education language, as an extension language for Java
applications, or as an autonomous script language.

Changes: Runtime changes includes lazy parameter evaluation, a faster
binary persisitence implementation, and hashbang support. Copy/Paste
support has been added to the IDE. A few predefined blocks haved been
added to the API: text API, boolean operators, ReadLine, and more.

  by Bruce Merry (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmerry/)
  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 08:36

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: BuGLe combines a graphical OpenGL debugger with a selection of
filters on the OpenGL command stream. The debugger allows viewing of
state, textures, framebuffers, and shaders, while the filters allow for
logging, error checking, free camera control, video capture, and more.

Changes: Interception of functions that are not filtered is now
significantly faster. For example, showfps will have far less overhead,
since it only acts on glXSwapBuffers. This release also changes the way
startup is handled to better facilitate libraries like Qt and SDL that
dynamically load libGL.so.

  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 17:07

System :: Filesystems
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Freedup eliminates duplicate files using links and thus reduces the
amount of used disk space within one or more file systems. Freedup searches
all provided file system trees for identical files and links them together.
If the devices differ, a symbolic link is used, otherwise a hard link by
default. Many options allow you to modify the file comparison, the linking
behavior, and the output. The input is either taken from external pipe
input or from an internally generated pipe using find.

Changes: A new option for interactive execution allows you to decide
which file to replace with a link or to delete. This mode is tested and
seems to work fine, but watch out for bugs if you are going to use it
frequently. The Makefile was restructured and cleaned up. Now there are
new options to generate tarballs or to clean the source directory. The
command sequences changed in many rules. The version is now kept in just
one place, freedup.spec. The documentation of the Web site is part of the
 source distribution.

[027] - hamsterdb 0.4.7
  by cruppstahl (http://freshmeat.net/users/cruppstahl/)
  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 07:23

Database
Database :: API
Database :: Database Engines/Servers

About: hamsterdb is an embedded database engine written in ANSI-C. It
includes B+Trees with variable length keys and records. It supports
in-memory databases and endian-independent files, database cursors,
multiple databases in one file, "record number" databases, and duplicate
keys. hamsterdb is very fast and highly configurable. It compiles and runs
on Unix platforms, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Windows CE.

Changes: This release brings major performance improvements for duplicate
keys and some bugfixes for record numbers and duplicate keys. The API has
two changes (ham_close and ham_env_close now expect a second parameter). A
new sample (env2.c) was added; it creates a 1:n relation between a
Customers database and an Orders database with the help of duplicate keys.
Prebuilt libraries for Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) are available for
download.

  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 05:49

Utilities

About: Jopen is a Unix little program that provides execution of an action
for any kind of file according to a list of rules. The base functionality
is similar to "Open with" features from Nautilus, Konqueror, and Windows
explorer, but command line-based. The configuration file has rules for
each file type, file name, or file content and actions for it. It follows
the sieve anti-spam email rules idea, but for files. It features Firefox,
Nautilus, and Amule integration, complete freedom to write your own rules
(use any bash command as a condition), updating executables that are
unavailable automatically, Just edit (for editing a file instead of
viewing), the ability to choose an alternate application, and an interface
program to edit rules.

Changes: Bugs were fixed. Interfaces support was added. Performance issues
were solved. File types may be downloaded online. The GIF, MIDI, CSS, WMA,
WMV, and bzip2 types are supported. MIME meta-types were added.

  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 10:04

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: JUCE is an all-encompassing C++ class library for developing
cross-platform applications. It's particularly good for creating
highly-specialised user interfaces and for handling graphics and sound.
The intended users are developers who are building large, complex
applications in C++ and who would like to use just one clean, high-level
API rather than a bunch of different libraries for different purposes or
platforms. Its features include fully lightweight components with
transparency and effects, classes for strings, containers, XML, streams,
file handling, messaging, and event queues, vector graphics, a custom font
engine, image manipulation, OpenGL support, low-latency audio I/O using
CoreAudio, DSound and ASIO, audio buffers and nodes, MIDI file and event
manipulation, Internet streams, undo/redo support, and more.

Changes: The big new feature in this version is an audio plugin hosting
framework and application. There are also many smaller features and a lot
of bugfixes.

System :: Filesystems
System :: Logging

About: loggerfs is a FUSE-based virtual file system that automatically
parses log files and sends that information to a MySQL or PostgreSQL
database. Existing log parsers usually run periodically and scan the
entire file for changes. loggerfs takes a different approach by providing
a virtual file system. Whenever data is appended to a virtual file by the
logging daemon, the information is directly stored in the database. There
is no need to poll the file and monitor for changes.

Changes: Some minor features were added, such as support for fuse-options
and setting owner permissions. Some performance enhancements were made.

  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 17:00

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The compiler (comp.sd7) was improved to support the 'remove
(array, index)' function. The functions isLeapYear, daysInMonth,
weekOfYear, weekDateYear, and weekDateWeek were added to the time.s7i
library. The exception checking program chkexc.sd7 was improved to check
for exceptions raised with arrays. Documentation for the bigInteger type
was added to the manual. Some strings in pic32.s7i and pairs.sd7 were
enlarged to avoid a RANGE_ERROR exception when accessing them.

  by Jorge Gonzalez (http://freshmeat.net/users/athenasoft/)
  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 17:09

Education
Games/Entertainment

About: Speaking Hangman is an educational game to practice and expand your
English and Spanish vocabularies. The game is designed for people of any
age above 7 years. A free, downloadable version of Speaking Hangman
features 2 levels of vocabulary, which are based on statistics about the
most commonly-used words. At level 1 you will practice the 450 most common
words in English or Spanish. At level 2 you will practice the 1,000 most
common words. Level 3, available on-line, features over 7,000 words in
English and over 8,000 in Spanish.

Changes: After every game a link to an online dictionary is shown, and
the player may click to open it and check the definition of the word.
English, Spanish, French, and Italian translations are available. The
15,000+ hangman words have been tested with English and Spanish lexicons,
and misspellings have been corrected. Words inappropriate for children
have been erased. Other minor bugs were fixed.

[058] - StreamCruncher 2.2 Release Candidate
  by Ashwin Jayaprakash (http://freshmeat.net/users/AshwinJ/)
  Wed, Oct 10th 2007 07:01

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Monitoring

About: StreamCruncher is an event processor. It supports a language based
on SQL that allows you to define "event processing" constructs like
sliding windows, time-based windows, partitions, and aggregates. Such
constructs allow for the specification of boundaries (some are time
sensitive) on a stream of events that SQL does not provide. Queries can be
written using this language, which in turn can be used to monitor streams
of incoming events. It also provides a feature similar to materialized
views. Joins and sub-queries are also supported to allow event
co-relation. A database is used underneath to do the heavy lifting.
Pattern matching or multi-stream correlation are also possible.

Changes: Correlation Queries (alert..when..) and Queries with just one
Stream have been re-architected to perform better and do not use the
Database. The RowSpec class has changed and the API accepts Java Data
types instead of Database specific types. Correlation Queries can process
168,000 Events per second on a 1.8 GHz Centrino.
