[012] - Hotwire 0.599
  by Colin Walters (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinwalters/)
  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 13:34

Software Development

About: Hotwire is intended to replace the interactive command execution
portion of a typical Unix shell. It includes much of the functionality
found in the combination of a terminal emulator, a shell, and core
utilities like ls and grep. Most of the commands are named the same, and
do basically the same thing. Where it makes sense, Hotwire improves the
commands to have better defaults and makes things nicer by using the
mouse, and so on. For example, rm moves files to ~/.Trash on Unix and
Recycle Bin on Windows, cd automatically lists the contents of the
directory you change to, ls links are clickable (view file or cd to
directory), filter (analogous to Unix grep) shows matching text in bold,
and the ps process list has right-click menu for killing.

Changes: Major UI rework was done. Many bugs were fixed. Keybindings,
globs, and command resolution were added.

[018] - littleutils 1.0.17
  by Brian Lindholm (http://freshmeat.net/users/brian_lindholm/)
  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 13:29

About: The littleutils are a collection of small but useful programs.
These programs include a duplicate file finder (repeats), image optimizers
(opt-jpg, opt-png, opt-gif, and recomp-jpg), file renaming utilities
(lowercase and uppercase), archive recompressors (to-bzip, to-7zip, and
to-lzma), a tempfile utility (tempname), text file cleanup utilities
(notabs, notrails, and lreplace), some low-level file query utilities
(filesize, filedate, filemode, and filenode), plus others. Web site
administrators will find the image optimizers particularly useful, while
script writers will find some of the lower-level utilities more useful.

Changes: Most utilities were re-released under the GPL version 3. The
tempname utility now features a -D option which can be used to create a
temporary directory instead of a temporary file. The -q option was removed
from the realpath utility. It now operates in quiet mode always unless
explicitly called to do otherwise with the -v option.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: lnkMusic is a powerful and easy-to-use interface for MPD (Music
Player Daemon). It features playlist sorting and a system tray item that
lets you control MPD without having to open the main window. The tag
browser is similar to the one in amarok with an integrated search engine.

Changes: The dynamic tray icon was corrected. A small bug was corrected:
sometimes the playlist window kept scrolling even if the dragging method
stopped. A small but important bug was corrected: the add function didn't
add the files if the tags are already present in between. The riconnection
after an error works correctly. When dragging items with an empty playlist,
the program crashed with a bad row index. The playlistinfo in the status
bar is now correctly displayed.

  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 04:05

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution

About: With 'nixstaller' you can easily make installers for Unix-like
systems. Some of the project goals: support for many different platforms,
support for different (optional) frontends used by the installer
(currently FLTK, ncurses, GTK 2, and Qt are planned), ease of use for the
install creator and the end user, different ways of installing (extract
files to a location, compile software on the user's system, and maybe even
integration for the package manager running on the user's system).
Nixstaller can be fully translated and is programmed in C++ and sh.

[025] - Pantheios 1.0.1 beta 37
  by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 15:04

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging

About: Pantheios is a C/C++ logging API library. It offers an optimal
combination of complete type-safety, very high efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (platform
and compiler independent), and it upholds the C tradition of only paying
for what you use. Pantheios supports logging of message statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogenous types. Pantheios supports
filtering of log messages based on severity level.

Changes: PANTHEIOS_SEV_xxx was changed from enumerators to SEV_xxx
enumerators, and the corresponding PANTHEIOS_SEV_xxx was #defined. The
implementation of pantheios::level "constant classes" was changed to avoid
dynamic initialization ordering problems. The code in the test tree was
tidied up, bringing all to the same naming convention and relative
directory path structure.

[026] - Port Scan Attack Detector 2.1
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 00:03

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
system daemons that are designed to work with the Linux iptables
firewalling code to detect port scans and other suspect traffic. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults), verbose alert messages, email alerting, DShield reporting, and
automatic blocking of offending IP addresses. Psad incorporates many of
the packet signatures included in Snort to detect various kinds of
suspicious scans, and implements the same passive OS fingerprinting
algorithm used by p0f.

Changes: The EMAIL_LIMIT model was changed to apply to scanning source
addresses only instead of also factoring in the destination address. The
original src/dst email limit behavior can be restored by setting a new
variable "ENABLE_EMAIL_LIMIT_PER_DST" to "Y". The
patches/iptables-1.3.8_LOG_prefix_space.patch file was added, which can be
applied to the iptables-1.3.8 code to enforce a trailing space character
before any log prefix when a LOG rule is added. A fix was implemented to
ensure that parsing TCP options does not descend into an infinite loop in
some some circumstances with obscure or maliciously constructed options.

  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 14:31

Office/Business :: Scheduling

composite tasks.

Changes: This bugfix release fixes one critical bug that affects users on
the Windows platform and several minor bugs that affect users on all

[034] - WANem 1.1.2
  by M K Nambiar (http://freshmeat.net/users/nambiar/)
  Sat, Oct 20th 2007 14:30

About: WANem can be used to emulate wide area network conditions in a LAN
environment. It can emulate network characteristics like Bandwidth,
latency, loss, disconnection, duplication, reordering, asymmetric
networks, etc. It is distributed in the form of a bootable CD.

Changes: Delay and loss and other parameters could not be emulated
simultaneously. This has been fixed. The r2q parameter was fixed in the
htb queue. This will improve accuracy in emulation of bandwidth less than
120kbps. MTU may be fixed to 1500 in the init script to enable this
change. The status command was fixed. When running multiple rule sets, it
did not calculate the number of rules correctly and gave out the message
"No running .... rules".
