System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional network configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides built-in support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable devices, full iproute2 command set,
interface dependencies resolution, QoS, and firewall configuration
frameworks. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv4/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, PentNET, PentVALUE,
SkyStar-2, TUN/TAP, OpenVPN TUN/TAP, usbnet, and PPP. Due to its modular
structure, support for new interface types can be added without overall
design changes.

Changes: This release features bugfixes for iwpriv config file handling
and for the new ifrename output format.

[004] - amavisd-new 2.5.3
  by Mark Martinec (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmartinec/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 10:08

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: amavisd-new is a high-performance and reliable interface between
MTAs and one or more content checkers, including virus scanners, and/or
the Mail::SpamAssassin Perl module. It talks to an MTA via (E)SMTP or
LMTP, or by using helper programs. No timing gaps exist in the design,
which could cause a mail loss. It is normally positioned at or near a
central mailer, not necessarily where the user's mailboxes and final
delivery takes place.

Changes: Parsing of an SMTP status response from MTA was fixed when
releasing from a quarantine for compatibility with old versions of MTA,
which did not provide an enhanced status code. Rewritten parsing of
Received header fields and hardened parsing of From, To, and Cc header
fields, to avoid complex Perl regular expressions that could crash a
process on certain degenerate cases of these header fields. Eight-bit
characters in In-Reply-To and References header fields are now sanitized
before using them in Pen Pals SQL lookups. The documentation section on
DKIM was updated in amavisd-new-docs.html.

[009] - BeanKeeper 2.3.3
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 07:29

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: BeanKeeper (formerly Simple Persistence for Java) is a full
featured, powerful object/relational persistence and query library. It has
a unique philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require
config files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind
of tools to be used. It handles simple Java beans (or POJOs) and its query
service returns lists. Despite its simpleness, under the hood the library
takes care of all the necessary logic: transaction visibility, result list
paging, keys and ids, table creation/modification, class relations,
inheritance/polymorphism, case sensitiveness, and much more. It currently
supports: Oracle, HSQLDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Changes: This release contains multiple bugfixes, such as international
character handling in queries, MySQL type handling fixes, list indexing
fixes, and lock leakage fixes. The save algorithm was corrected to save
only changed objects. The getPersistenceId() method was added for getting
an id for any object. The "in" operator was added to the query language,
so lists of values can now be used as a query parameter.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: bwfirt is a framework for benchmarking ray tracing kernels in the
context of a realistic light simulation application. The most important
capabilities tested here are: fast ray shooting and visibility functions
for incoherent mono-rays (no bundles), numerical robustness, and small
memory footprint. The framework implements a simple pathtracer to generate
rays with a real-life distribution. Developers can easily plug in their
cores to the framework, which then compiles the output images, running
times, and memory utilizations of the different kernels into a PDF,
providing a clear comparison.

About: Dabo is a three-tier, cross-platform database application
development framework, written in Python with the wxPython GUI toolkit.
The controls in Dabo's UI are easily bound to data by setting two
properties. The business object is designed to afford you complete control
over the validation and handling of your data. The cursor classes are
abstracted from their backend implementations, allowing for easy support
of nearly any backend database. Dabo's design and approach has been
inspired by RAD database development tools such as Visual FoxPro, Delphi,

[020] - DBIx::Perlish 0.33
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 08:15

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: A bug in the special import syntax implementation was fixed.
Special import syntax tests were added.

[021] - deco archive file extractor 0.5.4.1
  by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 06:21

System :: Archiving

About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will
just work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after
extraction, extracts relative to the current working directory, and
extracts just verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested
otherwise). It provides automatic handling of extractor gotchas by
creating an extraction directory if there is more than one file or
directory at the archive top level and by being able to fix strange
permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions are supported out of the
box, and adding support for others requires very little work.

[022] - DiscSpan 0.1.1
  by J.M. (http://freshmeat.net/users/ceefresh/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 17:13

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: DiscSpan is a tool that will take that a large directory full of
files and automatically burn a series of DVDs to near capacity, without
the need or hassle of creating individual ISOs or moving files around. It
is geared more towards smaller files such as music and photos, as it
cannot span a file across multiple discs. It prompts for the directory
you'd like to back up, the device to use to burn, and the speed at which
to burn. It analyzes the files and calculates how many DVDs are needed,
while making sure no files are greater than the size of a DVD.

Changes: Smater DVD drive detection.

[023] - DistribuStream 0.5.1
  by bascule (http://freshmeat.net/users/bascule/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 06:08

Communications :: File Sharing

About: DistribuStream is a fully open peercasting system, allowing
on-demand or live streaming media to be delivered at a fraction of the
normal cost. Content is distributed using segmented downloading similar to
BitTorrent, but provided in-order so it can be displayed on-the-fly as it
is being downloaded.

Changes: This release adds support for daemonization, allowing the dstream
executable to be run in the background automatically. You can now elect to
run dstream in the foreground by adding the -f command line option or by
setting "daemonize: false" in the configuration file. This release also
brings major improvements to the traffic routing algorithm. A new scoring
method is used to determine which peer should be used for a given
download, incorporating the trust model, bandwidth modeling, and prefix
information.

[024] - dkop .36
  by kornelix (http://freshmeat.net/users/kornelix/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 04:24

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Dkop is a utility program to copy or back-up disk files to DVD.
Full or incremental backups can be done, with full or incremental DVD
verification. Dkop uses a GUI to navigate through directories to select or
de-select files or directories at any level. Backup jobs can be saved for
recurring use. New, deleted, and updated files are handled automatically,
without re-editing the backup job. An incremental backup updates the same
DVD used for a prior full backup. Large backup jobs can be done using
multiple DVDs. A GUI restore function is also provided. Differences
between disk and DVD can be reported in total, by directory, and by file.

Changes: This is a minor revision for the different ways to get text error
messages in Linux and BSD. The previous version revised the verify-thorough

About: Partimage Is Not Ghost (PING) is a live Linux ISO based on LFS
(Linux From Scratch). It can be burnt on a CD and booted, or integrated in
a PXE/RIS environment. Several tools that make it the perfect choice for
easily backing up and restoring whole partitions are included. It supports
backups to and from SMB shares, backup of BIOS data, the ability to blank
the local admin's password, creation of bootable restoration DVDs, the
ability to partition and format a disk before installing Windows, and
more.

Changes: Sometimes, mount -t cifs (and possibly also smbfs) only works
with the mount -t xxx \\\\yyy\\zzz syntax, rather than //yyy/zzz. This

[074] - rsyslog 1.20.1 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 10:13

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, fully configurable output
formats (including great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of
the syslog message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as
a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the
same configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.

Changes: A memory leak in regard to PostgreSQL date formatting and a
potential race condition within repeated message processing have been
fixed. There are new runtime options to harden ACL processing when DNS is
not ready while rsyslogd starts up. There are also some minor changes and
code clean-ups. Upgrading is recommended to anyone using previous
releases. Users of PostgreSQL are urged to update to this version.

[080] - SWAMP 1.5.8
  by digitaltom (http://freshmeat.net/users/digitaltom/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 20:40

Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks

About: SWAMP is a workflow processing platform in which the workflow is
designed in an XML based language in one file which is read by the SWAMP
server. It avoids hardcoding business logic, and workflows can be built
from different workflow "patterns" like simple actions, decisions,
selections, loops, and custom code. The SWAMP server automatically creates
a Web GUI from the workflow definition file that guides users through the
business logic process based on their roles. Notification is sent if
required. Overview pages over all running workflows and much more are
available.

Changes: The executor for external programs/scripts can now set a timeout.
A task cache was added for active tasks. Tasks have a persistent ID on
re-activation. The role implementation was reworked, adding the ability to
reference to groups from the database backend. Data type problems were
fixed in SOAPSWAMP. An HTML data type with validation through jTidy was
added. The graph generation layout was reworked. Ajax is now used on the
index page to load individual tasks while the page is already useable. All
workflow stacks are loaded via Ajax, which gives a good improvement for
deep stacks.

[081] - Sylbi 0.05
  by arbingersys (http://freshmeat.net/users/arbingersys/)
  Wed, Dec 12th 2007 14:22

About: Sylbi is a conversation system that is not a forum and not a
blogging platform, but a combination of the two. It grew from the idea
that a blog with comments and a forum only differ in their perspective of
 the conversation. Both provide a chronological set of postings, initiated
by someone, and, (potentially) replied to by others. The main difference
is the perspective they present: a blog presents the perspective of the
blog owner(s), while a forum presents the perspective of the forum and a
topic defined in the forum. Sylbi allows you to look at conversations
either way.

Changes: This release adds paging to the topic view of conversations. The
admin can set paging for the site in Config.pm with the 'convers_paging'
parameter. If no paging is defined, when a user selects a topic, all
conversations are returned.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Tokyo Cabinet is a library of routines for managing a database. It
is the successor of QDBM. Tokyo Cabinet runs very fast. For example, the
time required to store 1 million records is 1.5 seconds for a hash
database and 2.2 seconds for a B+ tree database. Moreover, the database
size is very small. For example, the overhead for a record is 16 bytes for
a hash database, and 5 bytes for a B+ tree database. Furthermore, the
scalability of Tokyo Cabinet is great. The database size can be up to 8EB.

Changes: A record cache was added. An in-memory database was added.

[090] - Vortex Library 1.0.12
  by Advanced Software Production Line (http://freshmeat.net/users/aspl/)

Communications
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Vortex Library is a BEEP Core protocol implementation, following
the standard defined in RFC 3080 and RFC 3081. It has a clean and
easy-to-use API that allows you to write new application protocols very
quickly. Vortex Library has been developed within the Af-Arch project, and
it is being used at the data transport layer. However, Vortex Library can
be used independently of Af-Arch.

Changes: Many new interesting features like allowing to defer the decision
to create a channel (better integration with async client notifications and
GUI applications), functions to shutdown listeners (and connections
associated due to its function), and several API updates. This release
begins a deep internal change to make the library store all its state
(context) in an external object (VortexCtx). This will solve some issues
on Windows while using Vortex through Turbulence.
