[001] - AgileWiki 0.8.8 (CowDb)
  by Bill la Forge (http://freshmeat.net/users/laforge49/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 06:43

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a program that explores new knowledge representation.
It is an attempt to implement, at least in part, Norm Kashdan's Rolonic
Theory, a profoundly different approach to time and knowledge
representation. CowDb is a high-speed object store over which the next
generation of AgileWiki will be written.

Changes: Dirty object logic was cleaned up. CowdbFactory was updated to
make it easier to add new persistent object classes. There are now 8
chapters in the programming guide at
http://agilewiki.wiki.sourceforge.net/CowDb.

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: The audit package contains the user-space utilities for creating
audit rules, as well as for storing and searching the audit records
generate by the audit subsystem in the Linux 2.6 kernel.

Changes: system-config-audit was updated to version 0.4.5. The "week-ago"
keyword was added to aureport and ausearch start and end times. Audit log
permissions on rotate were fixed. If a file's group is root, then the
permissions are set to 0400, otherwise they are set to 0440. A RACF zos
remote audispd plugin was added. An event queue overflow action was added
to audispd.

[006] - Bacula 2.2.7
  by Lev_Arris (http://freshmeat.net/users/LevArris/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 05:03

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.

Changes: This release merely introduces bugfixes: bcopy will now produce
usable archives. Bacula recycles volumes instead of using volumes from
scratch. Waiting jobs no longer get canceled due to the 'max runtime'
setting. Building under Mac OS X 10.5 now works and adding a volume to a
pool that was exceeding the 'Maximum Volumes per Pool' setting will no
longer result in a loop.

[007] - BlockHosts 2.3.0
  by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 07:43

System :: Networking

About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times a local system is
attacked, based on configurable scanning of system logs for sshd or other
services. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is blocked using hosts.allow files,
or by using null-routing, or by using packet filtering. An email
notification facility is also available.

Changes: The keywords {LOG_PREFIX{service-name}} and {HOST_IP} were added
to make it easier to write patterns to scan log files. Support for Source
Mage Linux logs was also added.

[028] - Network PDF Server YAFPC-Appliance 5.02
  by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/ullrich/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 07:41

About: YAFPC-Appliance is a browser based management frontend for the PDF
composer/printer/Mailer YAFPC. It comes with the General-Purpose Appliance
System on a bootable CD in combination with an easy to use installation
script. Once installed, any PC booted from this CD image can act as a PDF
print server that provides an unlimited number of network shared virtual
PDF printers. The system requirements are low; any older PC can be used.
System configuration can be done via a Web browser from any workstation in
the network. Virtual shared printers can be configured to apply
letterheads, watermarks, cover pages, and appendixes to all printed
documents. After printing, a document is sent to its owner by mail, can be
accessed in a shared folder on the server, or can be stored in a shared
network folder on some other machine.

Changes: Email was not sent if the limit for the attachment size was set
to any value other than 0 (no limit).

  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 05:02

Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server and desktop virtualization
system based on the X11 protocol. NX is an order of magnitude faster than
VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. In addition,
NX translates and embeds the MS Windows Terminal Server and VNC protocols
into X/NX, enabling users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and
VNC sessions. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11proxying
agents implementing efficient compression and optimized transport of X11,
SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio and video over the
Internet.

Changes: The new packages consolidate all the improvements and adjustments
made on NX Client 3.0.0, such as enhancements for Windows Vista and support
for non-default CUPS installations. They also provide fixes for a number of
issues related to keyboard layout not working properly, in particular
Dutch, Norwegian, and Swiss German layouts.

[031] - nss-ldapd 0.5
  by Arthur (http://freshmeat.net/users/tiearthur/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 05:12

System :: Networking :: LDAP
System :: Systems Administration

About: nss-ldapd is a (glibc) NSS module for doing name lookups to an LDAP
server. This module allows retrieval of information about Unix accounts,
groups, hosts, and other information from an LDAP directory. It is a fork
from the nss_ldap module to do some architectural changes. This
implementation splits the functionality into an NSS part and a local
daemon to do the lookups. This works around a number of problems in the
original implementation.

Changes: This release brings major structural changes in the LDAP lookup
code with improved reconnect and timeout logic, Kerberos ccname support,
support for IPv6 addresses in host entries, DNS SRV record lookup support,
a fix for a small memory leak, and many other code and documentation
improvements.

[033] - oscjoy 1.10
  by Jeremy Friesner (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaf/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 21:11

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: oscjoy is a simple command line program that lets you use any
connected joysticks as OpenSoundControl devices. Whenever the state of a
connected joystick changes, oscjoy will send UDP packets with
OpenSoundControl messages in them to the specified IP address and port.
The oscjoy archive includes source code and binaries for Linux, Mac OS X,
and Windows XP.

Changes: This version adds the ability to specify aliases for various
joystick controls on the command line. This way you can use different
controllers and have oscjoy take care of handling any necessary logical
remappings, so that your downstream OSC program doesn't have to know or
care about the differences between the controllers.

About: oyepa implements a "fake but working" tagging file system. Users
can organize and retrieve documents based on the tags attached to them. No
changes to the operating system or applications are necessary.

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the install script (the new file
cfg.py wasn't being installed). It fixed a bug in the new
MusicExtensionsWidget (part of the support for jukebox functionality), in
which the getExtensions() method was returning a string as a list of chars
rather than as a one-item list of strings. A check has been added to the
music player (mp.py) so that the user cannot accidentally start multiple

[039] - QMC2 0.1 beta 11
  by Prian (http://freshmeat.net/users/prianthefist/)
  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 05:04

System :: Emulators

About: M.A.M.E. Catalog / Launcher II (also referred to as QMC2) is the
successor of one of the first XMAME GUI frontends available, QMamecat
(derived from MAMECAT, which was text-only). QMC2 has been rebuilt from
scratch as a Qt 4 project. Parts of the design and code were inspired by
its predecessor. The new design was made as flexible as possible to
minimize dependencies from frontend- and CLI-related MAME changes, which
was a major deficiency of QMamecat. QMC2 uses a template-based MAME
configuration scheme, which can easily be enhanced with additional command
line options (defined in an XML template file).

Changes: This release includes a lot of bugfixes, some major improvements,
and many new and important features. The most important ones are import and
export of global and game-specific MAME configurations, PNG game icons,
support for BIOS ROMs, a game list cache that gives a tremendous speed-up
at reload, support for alternative image sets, and a shortcut and GUI
control key remapper.

  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 14:22

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: The library cards.s7i, which contains the card pictures of a
French deck, was added. The documentation of the draw.s7i library was
improved. Some pictures were moved from castle.sd7 to pic16.s7i and
pic32.s7i. The function rpos (reverse search for a character in a string)
was added to the seed7_05.s7i library. The bas.sd7 (basic interpreter)
example program was improved. A new example program (carddemo.sd7), which
demonstrates the playing cards of the French deck, was added. Test cases
for the rpos function were added to the chkstr.sd7 program.

About: ServerKit helps developers quickly build efficient, scalable, and
uniformly configured, installed, and executed multi-threaded server
applications for Linux. A core server program handles configuration
parsing, database connection pool creation, and switching of users.
Application-specific modules are loaded at runtime and access the already
parsed configuration data and database connection pools via simple
well-defined program interfaces. ServerKit also provides a rich API for
quick and painless module development.

  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 21:10

Information Management :: Records Management
Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: Splunk is a search engine that indexes and lets you search,
navigate, alert, and report on data from any application, server, or
network device. It lets you securely access logs, configurations, scripts
and code, messages, traps and alerts, activity reports, stack traces, and
metrics across thousands of components from one place in real time. This
data can include Apache logs, Sendmail logs, J2EE events, custom
application logs, configuration files, or any other type of file that a
sysadmin or developer will need to examine on a regular basis.

Changes: Search strings can now contain variables that are rendered as
form elements in the SplunkWeb interface. When used with saved searches,
inexperienced users can search efficiently without knowing the details of
the search language. This feature simplifies searching by asking the user
to input exactly the parameters sought, instead of a complete and
potentially complex search. As part of a general effort to simplify the
search language, equal signs can now be used where double colons were
required.

About: wxRemind is a wxPython-based front/back-end for Remind, a powerful
calendar and alarm application, and for yeaGTD, a text based application
for 'getting things done'. The display features a calendar and daily event
list suitable for visualizing your schedule at a glance, together with a
flexible display of your GTD todo list. Dates and associated events can be
quickly selected either with the mouse or cursor keys, and dates in the
calendar are color coded to reflect the total duration of scheduled
events. wxRemind integrates with an external editor of your choice to make
editing of reminder and GTD files more efficient, provides hotkeys to
quickly access the most commonly used options, and allows popup, sound,
and/or spoken alarms.

Changes: The interface to yeaGTD has been removed from wxremind; a new

  Thu, Dec 27th 2007 13:50

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: zufall is a simple program to change the background periodically.
It takes one or more directories with images as a parameter (no GUI) and
sets a randomly chosen image as background. If there is a border
remaining, its color is the average color of two corners of the image.
This mostly fits the image very well. It doesn't work if the root window
is hidden by another program, like in Gnome or KDE. However, it is
possible to execute a configurable command to effect the change whenever
the image is supposed to change. A script to do this in Gnome is included.

Changes: A man page was added. A wrapper script to change the background
in gnome has been included. Zufall is now tested to compile on FreeBSD. A
bug in --minsize has been fixed. The license has been changed to the
