[001] - Apache SpamAssassin 3.2.4 (Stable)
  by Justin Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmason/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 11:59

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules

About: Apache SpamAssassin is an extensible email filter that is used to
identify spam. Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as
spam for later filtering. It provides a command line tool to perform
filtering, a client-server system to filter large volumes of mail, and
Mail::SpamAssassin, a set of Perl modules allowing Apache SpamAssassin to
be used in a wide variety of email systems.

Changes: Major sa-compile fixes. Minor fixes in other departments. 'score
set for a non-existent rule' has been made a debug message, instead of a
lint warning, since it's a very frequent FAQ.

  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 05:30

Multimedia
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: CDnavigator is an application that files your CDs and DVDs in a
database. It also deposits information about photos (JPEG), music (MP3),
and films stored in such media. You can also store other metadata such as
notes and ratings. You can search over all items and save the choices.
CDnavigator supports an automatic cache that saves the most frequently
used data on hard disk. Photos can be viewed directly in the application.
It can download new photos from a camera, sort them into albums, and
prepare them for burning on CD.

Changes: Searching was optimized. A CD number is no longer required for
the data structure. A simple HTML browser was added for documentation.
Screenshots and localization support were added for Web presentations.
Synchronization with the rest of the CDnavigator GUI and cursor hiding
were implemented for viewing photos. An empty EXIF header is created when
manipulating a photo and the EXIF header is missing. Other improvements
and bugfixes were made.

[011] - DBIx::Perlish 0.34
  by Grrrr (http://freshmeat.net/users/Grrrr/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 10:57

About: The DBIx::Perlish module provides the ability to work with
databases supported by the DBI module using Perl's own syntax for the four
most common operations: SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and INSERT. By using
DBIx::Perlish, you can write most of your database queries using a
domain-specific language with Perl syntax. However, the module is not
intended to replace all use of SQL in your program. The DBIx::Perlish
module quite intentionally neither implements nor cares about database
administration tasks like schema design and management.

Changes: This release adds support for getting the next value of a
sequence using "next" with a label argument syntax.

[012] - dtrx 5.1
  by Brett Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/bretts/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 10:42

About: dtrx intelligently extracts many different archive types. It will
get the contents from tar, zip, rpm, deb, and cpio archives, as well as
compressed files, with one simple command. It helps keep your filesystem
sane by putting every archive's contents into a dedicated directory, and
making sure the owner can read and write whatever's extracted. It can even
recursively extract archives.

Changes: Version 5.0 didn't work on Python 2.3; this release fixes that.

About: DynaStop is a utility to examine IPv4 based addresses for Exim and
procmail for the purpose of filtering based upon patterns defined by the
administrator. This can be a pivotal factor in email filtering and server
load management, since dynamic IP addresses are typically used for
dial-up, DHCP, and DSL accounts. All of which have a designated mail
exchange server through which all outbound mail flows as defined with
many, if not most, large Internet service providers.

[016] - GIMP SCRIPT-FUs for 2.4 12
  by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 05:02

About: GIMP SCRIPT-FUs for 2.4 is a collection of SCRIPT-FUs edited to
work in GIMP-2.4.x. The compiler of this collection is usually not the
original author for most of the scripts, but was able to tweak or get them
working better in GIMP 2.4 and consolidate them in a sane menu hierarchy.

[018] - GLE (Graphics Layout Engine) 4.1.1
  by jeans (http://freshmeat.net/users/jeans/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 10:59

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: GLE (Graphics Layout Engine) is a graphics scripting language
designed for creating publication quality graphs, plots, diagrams,
figures, and slides. GLE supports various graph types (including function
plots, histograms, bar graphs, scatter plots, contour lines, color maps,
and surface plots) through a simple but flexible set of graphing commands.
More complex output can be created by relying on GLE's scripting language,
which is full featured with subroutines, variables, and logic control. GLE
relies on LaTeX for text output and supports mathematical formulae in
graphs and figures.

Changes: This release significantly improves the graphical user interface
QGLE. It adds support for curved arrow heads, auto-scaling of graphs,
begin/end object blocks, arbitrary curve fitting, and many other features.

[019] - GNU ddrescue 1.7 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 05:24

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: This version skips very fast over damaged areas and maintains the
logfile minimized at all times, improving efficiency. The error count now
shows the number of error areas found, irrespective of their sizes. When
splitting, this version jumps to the next non-split area after two
consecutive errors have been encountered in the current one. The "check"
target has been added to the Makefile. The new option "--retrim" has been
added.

together with a converter to adopt the new syntax in existing programs.
Continuations and generators have been moved in the main image. The image
is loaded faster and uses copy-on-write memory mapped files, thus
improving memory consumption when multiple instances of GNU Smalltalk are
loaded. A new format is supported for packages written in GNU Smalltalk.
There is a new database interface with support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and

  by Kumosan (http://freshmeat.net/users/kumosan/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 13:53

Communications :: File Sharing

About: GSTorrent is a Bittorrent client/server system. A daemon program
handles all the file transfers as a Bittorrent client. The GSTorrent
daemon also acts as a server for an external GUI client. The objective is
to have a relatively small Bittorrent client, which runs on a small
computer without a graphical interface and to control this server from a
different machine. An example of this type of architecture is the mldonkey
client/server system for the edonkey protocol.

Changes: Versions < 0012 did not report the uploaded/downloaded bytes
correctly to the tracker. This bug prevented proper ratio counting and
allowed leeching on certain private trackers. It has been fixed.

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. It includes a
shell-command and bindings for Java (JNI) and Python.

Changes: This release adds support for Adobe Flash (FLV) and Free Lossless
Audio Codec (FLAC) files. The quicktime, ole2, and split extractors were
also improved.

[028] - LON-CAPA 2.6.0
  by Gerd Kortemeyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/korte/)
  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 10:44

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: The focus of this release is on better institutional
adaptability. Rules for usernames (e.g. allowed characters and length) and
student IDs can now be set on an institutional basis, as well as allowed
authentication types, addresses for helpdesks, and rules for the usage of
the institutional directory. The time zone can now be set on a
course-by-course basis. New tags <translated> and <lang> to support
multilingual pages and problems have been implemented. The release also
includes several other feature enhancements and bugfixes.

  Mon, Jan 7th 2008 05:32

System :: Networking :: Time Synchronization

About: OmniSync is a driver for NTPd for people who are
firewall-challenged. It enables systems to synchronize time when port 123
(UDP) is blocked. It allows you to sync against the daytime service (port
13 TCP/UDP), time (port 37 TCP/UDP), SNTS, IRC, and HTTP and HTTPS (both
also via proxy server). It doesn't directly set the clock but uses NTPd
for this, as this enables you to have multiple time sources as well as
bad-chimer detection, etc.

Changes: ICMP TIMESTAMP syncing ("syncing via ping requests") was added.
Initially stepping was added. This speeds up initial syncing and solves
the problem where the initial offset is too large for ntpd.

[058] - XIST 3.0
  by Walter Dörwald (http://freshmeat.net/users/doerwalter/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XIST is an extensible HTML and XML generator. It is also an XML
parser with a very simple and Python-esque tree API. Every XML element
type corresponds to a Python class, and these Python classes provide a
conversion method to transform the XML tree (e.g. into HTML). XIST can be
considered 'object-oriented XSLT'.

Changes: Namespaces have been greatly simplified. The dependency on PyXML
has been dropped. Tree traversal has been enhanced. CSS-related
functionality has been added. ReST is supported for docstrings now. There
are many other changes and bugfixes.
