[001] - abcm2ps 5.7.3 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 04:50
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: In addition to several bugfixes, this releases introduces the new
command %%breakoneoln.

Information Management
About: AgileWiki is a program that explores new knowledge representation.
It is an attempt to implement, at least in part, Norm Kashdan's Rolonic
Theory, a profoundly different approach to time and knowledge
representation. CowDb is a high-speed object store over which the next
generation of AgileWiki will be written. COODBMS is a Copy-on-write OODBMS
based on Rolonics.
Changes: Additional methods were added to PList for use by OODBMS:
AddPObject(String type), firstKey(), lastKey(), and sortedIterator().

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Screen Capture
About: Amora (A mobile remote assistant) is an application for S60 Nokia
smartphones written in Python (PyS6). It allows you to send keyboard
events and mouse moving in your Linux desktop. You can control slides,
movies, and any other application. Supported features include: mouse drag,
double clicking, mouse left button, and some common keyboard keys (Enter,
Esc, Space, F5, arrow key left/right, 'F', etc.). It can take a screenshot
of the active window on your desktop and view thumbnail on the cellphone.
Communication uses Bluetooth.
Changes: The server has support for multiple cell phones, CLI arguments, a
Debian package, inclusion in Mandriva Cooker repositories, an RPM spec file
(should make it easier to package for other RPM-based distributions), and
man pages. The client has a stopwatch (useful to control time in
presentations), an improved configuration screen, mouse cursor moving
delta, automatic display of keymap layout at start to control the desktop,
support for continuous keypressing, and SIS packaging for the Nokia S60
3ed.

Communications :: WAP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80, or securely using SSL. This provides you
with shell access to your machine from almost any Web browser, even when
firewalls are in the way. Experimental features include support for
standalone operation without Apache, and the my.anyterm.org service
provides access without the need to install anything on your servers.
Changes: This release fixes a couple of memory corruption problems
discovered using Valgrind. It also improves the efficiency of the
client-server communication and makes it easier to change the color
scheme.

[006] - Apache SQL analyser 0.8
by Steve Kemp (http://freshmeat.net/users/skx/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 13:31
Internet :: Log Analysis
About: asql allows you to run SQL queries against log files formatted in
the Apache common log file format. You may load multiple log files into a
session, then run queries using a full SQL implementation, to find things
such as the most common referers to your site, the greediest downloaders,
and much more. Internally, each log file is parsed and imported into a
temporary SQLite database, so performance is very good.
Changes: This release will now correctly parse both of the common Apache
log formats by default. It also adds the ability to import remote,
authenticated usernames to the database.

[007] - Baldrick Application Framework 0.84
by Matt Hucke (http://freshmeat.net/users/matthucke/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 00:51
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: The Baldrick Application Framework is a library of Perl 5 modules
to provide Web application functionality: session management,
URL-to-handler mapping, user loading, authentication and authorization,
database connectivity and querying, and template-based output generation.
It is a tool for programmers to use in building their own Web applications
("modules"), which can run under CGI or mod_perl. Users on a site should be
able to freely move between modules without re-authenticating, even if
those modules were from different developers.
Changes: foo=bar from
ARGV is now parsed into request parameters. Some
things from DBUserLoader were moved to UserLoader. SpecialTurnip fixes
were made for multi-table turnips. The arguments O, P, Q, etc. were added
for Dogsbody handle functions deprecated() was added in Baldrick::Util.
abort() was deprecated as it conflicts with POSIX. fatalError() should be
used instead. There were installer fixes for Windows.

Office/Business
About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times a local system is
attacked, based on configurable scanning of system logs for sshd or other
services. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is blocked using hosts.allow files,
or by using null-routing, or by using packet filtering. An email
notification facility is also available.
Changes: The log match rules were updated to accept lines without a colon
(:) after the [pid]. This is seen in some Debian and Ubuntu installs, at
least.

Tue, Jan 15th 2008 13:49
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
System :: Monitoring
About: The Bubbling Load Monitor (or "Bubblemon" for short) is a system
load monitor for the GNOME panel. It looks like a vial containing water.
The water level indicates how much (electronic) memory is in use. The
color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used. The amount of
bubbles reflects the system CPU load. A message in a bottle indicates
there is unread mail. A reed-like graph shows network load. On multi-core
systems the CPU with the highest load will bubble in the middle, and the
others on the sides, so it's possible to see how well load gets
distributed between CPUs.

[013] - Cairo 1.4.14
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 01:18
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Cairo is a vector graphics library with cross-device output
support. It currently supports the X Window System and in-memory image
buffers as output targets. It is designed to produce identical output on
all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration
when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). It provides a
stateful user-level API with capabilities similar to the PDF 1.4 imaging
model and provides operations including stroking and filling Bezier cubic
splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased
text rendering.
Changes: A regression where stroking under a large scale would sometimes
incorrectly replace a miter join with a bevel join was fixed. The xlib
backend was fixed to not consider recent X server releases as having a
buggy repeat implementation in the Render extension. Several bugs in
Cairo's PostScript output were fixed, including making the PostScript
output more compatible with recent versions of Ghostscript that are more
strict about Type 3 fonts.

by Ivan Raikov (http://freshmeat.net/users/iraikov/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 10:12
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Chicken is a Scheme compiler that translates most of R5RS Scheme
into relatively portable C. It supports fully general tail-call
optimization, first-class continuations, and multiple values. Numerous
extensions are available, like support for various SRFIs, record
structures, hash-tables, queues, custom I/O ports, extended string
operations, regular expressions, Common LISP style `format', TCP sockets,
lightweight threads, pattern matching macros, syntax-case macro systen,
dynamic loading of compiled code, and a simple CLOS-like object-system
with MOP.
Changes: Literals are compiled in a platform-independent binary encoding
into the executable, which results in faster C compile times and more
compact binaries. New procedures in regex and POSIX library units.
Bugfixes in file-size, file-stat, and find-files. The "chicken-bug"
program can now be used to create bug reports and send them to the CHICKEN
maintainers. Many build system improvements. Cygwin is now fully supported,
and there is better cross-compilation support. A number of deprecated
functions have been removed.

[023] - Fedora Directory Server 1.1.0
by Rich Megginson (http://freshmeat.net/users/richm31415/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 13:44
About: Fedora Directory Server is a full-featured LDAPv3 compliant server.
In addition to the standard LDAPv3 operations, it supports multi-master
replication, fully online configuration and administration, chaining,
virtual attributes, access control directives in the data, Virtual List
View, server-side sorting, SASL, TLS/SSL, and many other features. The
transactional Berkeley DB 4.2 is used as its data store and a full plug-in
API allows developers to extend the the functionality of the server in many
ways, and many of the core features of the server are already implemented
using this API. The server is very mature, having started out as Netscape
Directory Server.
Changes: Fedora Directory Server 1.1 has been split into discrete yum
packages. Most of the packages are in Fedora or will be shortly.
Installation is now done easily with yum. Filesystem Hierarchy Standard
paths are now used instead of the /opt filesystem, for tighter OS
integration. Many bugfixes have been made.

[029] - Himerge 0.16
by Luis Araujo (http://freshmeat.net/users/LuisAraujo/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 10:37
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: Himerge is a GUI for emerge (Gentoo's Portage system) written in
Haskell using gtk2hs. The main idea is to simplify browsing the entire
portage tree, and allow running the most basic and common options from the
emerge command. It also offers several handy tools, like global and local
use flags browsers, inspired by UFED (the Gentoo Linux USE flags editor).
It also uses eix (a small utility for searching ebuilds with indexing for
fast results) as a back-end command to show package information in
HTML/CSS format, so you can access a package's Web site for a quick
glance.
Changes: GHC 6.8 compliant. A 'Portage Browser Operations' panel. A
'Browser Editor' panel for editing the contents shown by the browser in a
given time. An option to 'Refresh' the browser views. Interactive
searching has been enabled for the packages 'Queue' list. Now packages can
be easily searched and located interactively from any queue list. Text
buffer operations are improved. You can now scroll to the current
processed package in the 'Queue' lists. This release allows you to work
with the branching operations keyword/mask/unmask over all the versions of
a package at once.

Tue, Jan 15th 2008 01:00
Software Development :: Libraries
About: LPSM is a C library with a simple interface that manages a segment
of memory backed by a persistent file. It differs from ordinary mmap() in
two ways: it can optionally offer heap management (malloc/free/realloc)
within the arena, and more importantly, a transaction log is used to
ensure the consistency of the persistent representation. The application
notifies LPSM whenever the arena is in a consistent state, suitable for

About: Muldex-sampler is a lightweight and efficient data collection tool
for use with the Muldex monitoring service. It samples system data
including CPU utilization, disk and partition utilization, file and inode
object counts, interrupt rates, context switching rates, fork rates, load
average, network interface activity, memory and VM utilization, swapping,
and paging rates. The sampler communicates this collected data to the
Muldex server in a transmit-on-change fashion to minimize network traffic
while still supporting a relatively high sample rate of 1HZ.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server and desktop virtualization
system based on the X11 protocol. NX is an order of magnitude faster than
VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. In addition,
NX translates and embeds the MS Windows Terminal Server and VNC protocols

[042] - Nuface 2.0rc3 (Nuface2)
by Vincent Deffontaines (http://freshmeat.net/users/gryzor/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 14:38
Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Nuface is a Web-based administration tool that generates Edenwall,
NuFW, or simple Netfilter firewall rules. It features a high level
abstraction on the security policy set by the administrator, and works
internally on an XML data scheme. Its philosophy is to let you agglomerate
subjects, resources, or protocols into meta-objects, and use those meta
objects to generate ACLs, which are then interpreted as netfilter rules by
Nupyf, the internal XML parser. This tool may easily be extended to support
firewall implementations other than Netfilter.
Changes: A redesign of the data model. Countless design and ergonomy
fixes. Ported to PHP 5 (PHP 4 is no longer supported). gettext is used for
i18n. This release performs much stricter control on ACL files at load
time. The license has changed to the GPLv3.

System :: Systems Administration
About: ramlog acts as a system daemon that maintains log files in memory
instead of hard disk while the system is running. On startup, it creates a
ramdisk, copies files from /var/log into the ramdisk, and mounts the
ramdisk as /var/log. All logs after that will be updated on the ramdisk.
When shutting down or restarting the service, it saves log files back to
hard disk. This service drastically reduces the frequency of hard disk

[061] - TaskJuggler 2.4.1-beta1
by Chris Schlaeger (http://freshmeat.net/users/taskjuggler/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 04:47
Office/Business :: Groupware
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: TaskJuggler is a modern and powerful project management tool. Its
new approach to project planning and tracking is far superior to the
commonly used Gantt chart editing tools. It has already been successfully
used in many projects and scales easily to projects with hundreds of
resources and thousands of tasks. It covers the complete spectrum of
project management tasks from the first idea to the completion of the
project. It assists you during project scoping, resource assignment, cost
and revenue planing, and risk and communication management.
Changes: This release is mostly a bugfix release. It addresses, among
other less serious issues, two scheduling related bugs that caused larger
project durations in certain situations. The scheduler has been improved
to fix this problem.

by Doug Bell (http://freshmeat.net/users/Doug101/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 04:58
Other/Nonlisted Topic
About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
structure is navigated and edited in the left pane of the window, while
various views of the child data are shown and editable in the right pane.
The data is stored in XML text files. TreeLine is based on the PyQt
library.

[065] - uni2ascii 4.4
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Tue, Jan 15th 2008 01:06
Software Development
Software Development :: Internationalization
Text Processing :: General
About: uni2ascii and ascii2uni convert between UTF-8 Unicode and 29 7-bit
ASCII equivalents including: hexadecimal and decimal HTML and SGML numeric
character references, \u-escapes, standard hexadecimal, raw hexadecimal,
and RFC2396 URI format. Such ASCII equivalents are useful for entering
Unicode in program source or in programs that are not 8-bit safe, and for
testing and debugging. Several options allow Unicode to be converted to
approximately equivalent ASCII, e.g. by stripping diacritics. An optional
GUI is provided.
Changes: This release adds an option to uni2ascii which produces
single-character approximations for the same characters given
multi-character approximations by the -x option. The license is now GPL
v.3.
