[006] - C++ Debugging Support library 1.0.0
  by Carlo Wood (http://freshmeat.net/users/aleric/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 23:22

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Libcwd is a full-featured and well-documented library that assists
C++ developers with debugging their applications. It includes support for
ostream-based debug output, custom debug channels and devices, memory
allocation debugging, run-time sourcefile:linenumber information, and
demangled type names of variables. It is thread-safe.

Changes: An important bug has been fixed for the threaded case: libcwd_r
uses several pthread_mutexattr_t objects, but never initialized those.
This resulted in uninitialized memory being used, resulting in random
mutex attributes. This is believed to be the reason that gcc-3.x locked
up. That version of gcc is therefore now supported again. This version
adds support for sparc64. All configure options now work also on 64-bit
platforms. Support for the latest SVN version of gcc (4.3) was updated.

[009] - ConvertAll 0.4.1
  by Doug Bell (http://freshmeat.net/users/Doug101/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 05:31

Scientific/Engineering

About: ConvertAll is a unit conversion program in which units can be
combined with multiplication and division operators and can be squared,
cubed, etc. The interface is graphical, allowing the units to be

[010] - convmv 1.11
  by Björn JACKE (http://freshmeat.net/users/bjoernjacke/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 07:37

About: convmv converts filenames (not file content), directories, and
even whole filesystems to a different encoding. This comes in very handy
if, for example, one switches from an 8-bit locale to an UTF-8 locale or
changes charsets on Samba servers. It has some smart features: it
automagically recognises if a file is already UTF-8 encoded (thus partly
converted filesystems can be fully moved to UTF-8) and it also takes
care of symlinks. Additionally, it is able to convert from normalization
form C (UTF-8 NFC) to NFD and vice-versa. This is important for
interoperability with Mac OS X, for example, which uses NFD, while Linux
and most other Unixes use NFC. Though it's primary written to convert
from/to UTF-8 it can also be used with almost any other charset encoding.
Convmv can also be used for case conversion from upper to lower case and
vice versa with virtually any charset. Note that this is a command line
tool which requires at least Perl version 5.8.0.

Changes: This release fixes some small bugs, improves the test suite, and
introduces a new check routine which is called at program startup. Perl
5.8.8 introduced a bug that affected convmv which can be worked around.
Perl 5.10 again introduced a bug which is now reported to be a Perl bug so
that the user does not wonder why things don't work as expected.

[022] - fwsnort 1.0.4
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 23:28

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

Changes: This version was updated to exclude loopback interfaces from
iptables allow rules parsing. This behavior can be reversed with the
existing --no-exclude-loopback command line argument. IPTables::Parse was
updated to take into account iptables policy output that contains "0"
instead of "all" to represent any protocol. IPTables::Parse was updated to
set sport and dport to "0:0" if the protocol is "all". A bug was fixed to
allow negated networks to be specified within iptables allow rules or
within the fwsnort.conf file. install.pl was updated to set the LC_ALL

  by Brian Aker (http://freshmeat.net/users/briantangentorg/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 10:32

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libmemcached is a C client library for interfacing to a memcached
server. It has been designed to be light on memory usage, thread safe and
to provide full access to server side methods. It also implements several
command line tools: memcat, memflush, memrm, memstat, and memslap (for
load generation). The library has been designed to allow for different
hashing methods on keys, partitioning by keys, and to use consistent
hashing for distribution.

Changes: This release fixes a bug where increment() was not returning the
proper error if a value was not found. It has a fix for bad null pointer
on flag. All I/O has been refactored to just pass in the active server. A
problem configuring (PKG_CHECK_MODULES) has been fixed by the removal of
"rpath" in support/libmemcached.pc.in. memcached_callback_get()/set() has
been added. An initial prototype of the C++ interface has been added. The

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: The students' "Quick Grades" display once again recognizes
problems with different point weights. The uploading of clicker grades was
fixed. When authoring problems, instructors can once again automatically
test them for multiple randomizations. When grading essays, instructors
can again immediately compose feedback messages to students. Course
descriptions can start with an underscore character.

[046] - MeTA1 1.0.PreAlpha23.0
  by Claus Assmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/casmx/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 23:48

About: MeTA1 is a modularized message transfer agent (MTA) consisting of
five (or more) persistent processes, four of which are multi-threaded. A
queue manager controls SMTP servers and SMTP clients to receive and send
email messages, an address resolver provides lookups in various maps
(including DNS) for mail routing, and a main control program starts the
other processes and watches over their execution. The queue manager
organizes the flow of messages through the system and provides measures to
avoid overloading the local or remote systems by implementing a central
control instance. It is simple to configure using a C-like syntax and is
secure and efficient.

Changes: This release fixes a few bugs, most of which are related to
createmap and the cdb map type. Two new features were added. The
interesting one is that the SMTP server now treats "Relaying denied"
errors as "bad" commands. This means that those rejections count for
max_bad_commands_per_session and max_bad_commands_per_transaction. This is
useful when a client is broken enough to try several relaying attempts.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: OpenMocha is an JavaScript application server and development
framework that supports quick soft-coding and clean hard-coding in
Javascript on the client- and server-side. New projects can be quickly
soft-coded by creating custom Mocha Objects using the Web browser. As the
project matures, these Mocha Objects can be re-factored and hard-coded in
separate code files. The two approaches can be mixed at any time, patching
hard-coded applications through soft-coding even during runtime. It intends
to stretch and scale between fast all-in-one deployment and complex
integration in best-of-breed environments.

Changes: A new and experimental core for a complete rewrite of the
Openmocha Javascript server-side. This version introduces two new tiers,
e4xd and jhino, which create a lean and flexible soft-coding environment
around a JOMP patched Rhino and a patched Helma, with additional filename

[055] - PerlDesk 4.20 (Stable)
  by John B (http://freshmeat.net/users/PerlDesk/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 10:13

Communications

About: PerlDesk is a fully featured help desk, ideal for companies with
several technicians who are required to support many users. It
incorporates many features to streamline support and improve customer
relations, such as: Email and web based ticket submission, staff logging,
a knowledge base, and user registration.

Changes: This release has the ability to generate reports on ‘time spent’
on help desk tickets. This allows you to generate a report on a per user,
all user, or per staff basis to view statistics on the time that has been
spent on tickets in a specific period. This data could then be used to
bill for tech support using an external system. Response count has been
added to the tickets list in staff view. A check for external modules has
been added to the upgrade procedure. A check for up-to-date pdesk.sql has
been added to the upgrade procedure.

[057] - PHP MIME Mail decoder class 2008.01.22
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 00:44

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can
decode messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart
messages can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the
message body data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle
messages larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some
syntax errors in malformed messages that are not compliant with RFC 2822.

Changes: The RFC822 e-mail address parser can now decode names with
non-ASCII characters associated with each e-mail address. It was also made
more tolerant to e-mail addresses not conforming to RFC 2822. The message
Analyze function now also returns the original message sent date.

About: PLOTICUS is a command line utility for creating bar, line, pie,
boxplot, scatterplot, sweep, heatmap, vector, timeline, Venn diagrams, and
other types of charts and plots. ploticus is good for automated or
just-in-time graph generation. It handles date, time, and categorical data
nicely, and has some basic statistical capabilities. It can output to GIF,
PNG, SVG, SWF, JPEG, PostScript, EPS, and X11. You can use convenient
preset options or create complex scripts with rich and detailed color and
style operations.

Changes: Two new plotting procs (catlines and tree) were added. Slanted x
axis stubs were added. Input data can now be bar-delimited or the
delimitation can be auto-detected. PNG/GIF/JPEG images are incorporated
into the result when producing SVG. New data processing capabilities were
added. Colors such as xFEDCBA can be specified. A number of other minor
feature additions and bugfixes were made. A revision pass was done,
affecting all script and attribute parsing, with the goal of eliminating
attribute length restrictions where possible.

[062] - Quick-Join 1.0.10
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 13:33

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: Quick-Join implements a heuristic for speeding up neighbour
joining, making neighbour joining feasible for large sets of taxa. The
inferred tree is identical to the tree inferred by the traditional
neighbour joining method, but the heuristic will (potentially) construct
the tree significantly faster.

Changes: This version splits the output, when doing bootstrapping, into
two trees, one annotated with branch lengths and one annotated with
bootstrap values. This makes post-processing easier, since most tools
support a single branch annotation but not two.

[063] - ReactOS 0.3.4
  by cliveb (http://freshmeat.net/users/cliveb/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 07:03

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: ReactOS is an advanced operating system providing a ground-up
implementation of a Microsoft Windows XP compatible operating system. It
aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and
device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems by using a similar
architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.

Changes: The Cm (Config Manager a.k.a. registry support) in ntoskrnl was
completely rewritten. This makes it much more compatible with NT5.2
(win2k3). A plug-n-play keyboard and mouse driver was added. All usermode
DLLs were synchronized with the most recent Wine release. Support for RPC
and IDL (which was quite outdated and buggy) was finally brought up to
date, providing a solution for the plug-n-play manager problems, ReactOS
Services, and promising future support for complex applications such as
Microsoft Office. Huge improvements were made to user32, which now uses
the desktop heap, greatly speeding up the UI.

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release fixes an obscure but important bug when dividing
large integers. In some uncommon cases, the program could print
NotAnIntegerException and halt instead of dividing the numbers. In
addition, this release adds a "multi-line" input mode to the AWT GUI,
allowing easier entry of multi-line constructs such as complex functions,

[077] - WANPIPE 3.2.2 (Beta)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 23:48

Communications
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System

About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.

Changes: Graceful recovery on short circuit was implemented for the AFT
Maxim front end. A check was added for TDM IRQ timeout for the AFT driver.
MTU and voice-only setup were fixed for SMG. Zaptel 1.4 HW HDLC support was
added. The HWEC Noise flag was added in the wanpipe configuration file. E1
Unframed on Maxim Cards was updated. Bugfixes were made for AFT PMC and
MAXIM framers. HWEC_PERSIST_DISABLE was fixed. SMG/SS7 was updated.
Loopback commands for AFT Maxim cards were updated. The software was
updated for AstLinux. add_timer warnings were fixed for all AFT cards. The
legacy protocols were updated for the new front end architecture. The setup
script was updated.

  by wiakapps (http://freshmeat.net/users/wiakapps/)
  Tue, Jan 22nd 2008 23:24

About: Wiak is a very efficient, special-purpose, usually non-interactive,
extremely lightweight IPC shell that is used for building client/server
"wiakapps". A variety of demonstration wiakapps are available as part of
the current WIAK suite. The name WIAK stands for the "WIAK Interface für
Application Kontrolle". As an inter-process communications utility, its
name reflects its ability to create and control diverse wiakapps whose
component parts may be written in a variety of programming languages and
with an assortment of GUI toolkits.

Changes: A new family of more resource-efficient wiak shell programs has
been created called the "twiaks". Unlike a full wiak, each individual
twiak can handle only with one IPC mode (albeit in a more efficient
package). A few variables have also been renamed in order to facilitate
the future inclusion of POSIX message queues. The documentation has had a
major revision to account for the new twiak family.
