  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 06:34

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: autoSyncPodder is a program which automatically downloads podcasts
and syncs them with your MP3/Ogg player without user interaction. The
download part of the autoSyncPodder is called by cron once a day. The
syncing is started as soon as the player is plugged into a USB port. If a
file gets deleted on the player, the file will get deleted at the next
sync on the computer too.

[003] - blindRSS 0.1
  by blindCoder (http://freshmeat.net/users/blindcoder/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 08:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: blindRSS is a very simple browser-operated RSS reader. You can
click through the feeds in a sidebar, use the (hopefully self-explanatory)
icons next to them to manipulate them, and do all the other stuff a RSS
reader should do. It's programmed so that the feeds are reread by a
cronjob or daemon, while as much functionality as possible is done within
the client. Thus, the server only serves the data, not the markup.

(user/group/host) Web filter and virus scan utilities for blocking
malicious applications at the gateway. It has an advanced URL database,
authentication support (LDAP and Active Directory), SSL Interception, easy
deployment, and remote administration.

Changes: A conditional cascade was implemented. A request can now be
cascaded to different servers based on request source IP and request
target URL. A bug with internal Web server handling was fixed. Problems
with non-RFC compliant Internet Explorer HTTP/1.0 POST implementation were
fixed. Problems with client receive timeouts that were too low were fixed.

Internet

About: DynaStop is a utility to examine IPv4 based addresses for Exim and
procmail for the purpose of filtering based upon patterns defined by the
administrator. This can be a pivotal factor in email filtering and server
load management, since dynamic IP addresses are typically used for
dial-up, DHCP, and DSL accounts. All of which have a designated mail
exchange server through which all outbound mail flows as defined with
many, if not most, large Internet service providers.

About: eHour is a Web-based time registration tool for project-based
businesses. The primary objective is to keep time tracking as simple as
needed while still being very effective at measuring and reporting the
amount of time your team spends on a project. It is developed in Java
(Spring and Hibernate) with a MySQL backend.

Changes: A new feature was added, allowing a person to write a small
comment for each entry in the timesheet describing, for example, what was
done in that period. Also, a new type of report was added which shows all
the hours booked on a day-to-day basis, including the above mentioned
comments.

  by jonsd (http://freshmeat.net/users/jonsd/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 13:29

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech

About: eSpeak is a compact text to speech engine for good quality English
and other languages. Its clear articulation and good intonation makes it
suitable for listening to long text articles. It can speak text files from
the command line, and also operates as a "talker" within the KDE TTS system
and with a Gnome Speech driver, as an alternative to Festival or other
similar programs. Windows SAPI5 and command line versions are also
available.

Changes: Improvements have been made to languages including American,
Spanish, and Lojban. New command line options have been added: --split and
--compile=debug. A speech quality bug in version 1.30 has been fixed that
gave vowels too strong an attack. Corrections have been made to SSML tags:
emphasis, break time, say-as, and audio.

[015] - GNU ddrescue 1.8-pre3 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 17:24

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: The new option "--generate-logfile" has been added. The chapter
"Fill Mode" of the manual has been updated.

[017] - GPlot 1.3
  by Terry Gliedt (http://freshmeat.net/users/tgliedt/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 13:17

Scientific/Engineering

About: GPlot provides a convenient front-end for gnuplot. It accepts a
large set of options to generate a single plot of one or more sets of data
(overlaid as necessary). This adds no new functionality to gnuplot, but
rather makes it easier to generate gnuplot input.

Changes: This release allows one to plot more than four sets of data at

  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 08:18

Education
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy

About: Henry is an educational astrometry utility for performing
calculations based on a Hertzsprung-Russel (H-R) diagram, such as
spectroscopic parallax for working out the distance to a given star.
Unlike many other solutions that use in-built images for their H-R
diagrams, Henry plots data directly from the European Space Agency's
HIPPARCOS catalog, allowing increased accuracy while also giving students
greater room to experiment by exploring the catalogue themselves.

Changes: Custom stars are now fully supported, as they were in the C#
branch, with improvements in user interface and additional formulae added.
Multiple windows can be opened simultaneously for comparisons, improvements
have been made to color handling in plots, usability in queries, and
plotting speed has been improved slightly. Bugs with color changing and
custom stars have been closed.

[020] - I18NEdit 1.2.2
  by Dirk Hillbrecht (http://freshmeat.net/users/dirkhillbrecht/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 08:42

Software Development :: Internationalization

About: I18NEdit manages internationalized properties for Java programs and
features a PHP adapter class for them. All property bundles are shown in a
tree, and each property is editable directly in all available
localisations. I18NEdit keeps track of changes in a source locale and
presents the translator only what has been altered since his last
translation session. Distributed working groups are supported by merging
features.

Changes: Shown locales and translation mode are independent of each other
now. All locales can be edited, even if in translation mode. Text and
property names can be searched. Internally, UTF-8 is now used explicitly,
leading to locale independence. The user interface has been beautified.

[033] - ModSecurity 2.1.5 (Stable)
  by Brian Rectanus (http://freshmeat.net/users/b1v1r/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 10:29

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: ModSecurity is an intrusion detection and prevention engine for Web
applications (sometimes called a Web application firewall). Operating
embedded or as part of an Apache reverse proxy, it increases Web
application security, protecting Web applications from known and unknown
attacks. It is flexible and easy to configure. It monitors HTTP traffic
(including POST payloads), detects or prevents attacks, enhances logging,
performs anti-evasion, and allows administrators to create custom rules to
suit their specific needs. It excels in HTTP traffic monitoring and
just-in-time vulnerability patching.

Changes: This version includes an updated Core Ruleset (version 1.5.1).
Phase 5 rules can now be removed via SecRuleRemoveBy* directives, and an
issue is fixed where only the first phase 5 rule would run when the
request was intercepted in an earlier phase. The escapeSeqDecode
transformation now better follows ANSI C escapes, and a minor
configuration parsing issue is fixed so that disruptive actions, meta
actions, and phases are no longer allowed in a chained rule (as originally
intended).

Software Development

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server and desktop virtualization
system based on the X11 protocol. NX is an order of magnitude faster than
VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. In addition,
NX translates and embeds the MS Windows Terminal Server and VNC protocols
into X/NX, enabling users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and
VNC sessions. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11
proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized transport
of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio and video over
the Internet.

Changes: This version gives the possibility of limiting the amount of data
that can be transferred by a single copy and paste operation and provides
fixes for some issues such as a possible crash in the X11 agent when
running Mesa/OpenGL code, a possibility that the session log may grow with
Compiz enabled while moving windows on screen, and a problem where drag and

[037] - OmniSync 0.6
  by Folkert van Heusden (http://freshmeat.net/users/fvh/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 13:42

System :: Networking :: Time Synchronization

About: OmniSync is a driver for NTPd for people who are
firewall-challenged. It enables systems to synchronize time when port 123
(UDP) is blocked. It allows you to sync against the daytime service (port
13 TCP/UDP), time (port 37 TCP/UDP), SNTS, IRC, ICMP, and HTTP and HTTPS
(both also via proxy server). It doesn't directly set the clock but uses
NTPd for this, as this enables you to have multiple time sources as well
as bad-chimer detection, etc.

Changes: This release can synchronize the internal clock to the time
returned by an SNMP server. It correctly sets the precision for ICMP
timestamp, now compiles on IRIX as well, and the initial clock set can now
use an average of multiple measurements.

[049] - Super CSV 1.30
  by Dr. Kasper Graversen (http://freshmeat.net/users/kbilsted/)
  Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 17:23

About: Super CSV is a CSV package for the Java 5+ platform. It operates on
streams rather than file names, so you can read and write files of any
encoding from any kind of source. It operates on maps and POJO beans, so
you don't have to convert to or from String arrays. It has a powerful
notion of a cellprocessor which enables you to regard columns in your CSV
files as real types such as numbers and dates rather than as strings.
Additionally, the processors can also act as a constraint mechanism,
enabling you to naturally specify constraints on your data.

Changes: BeanReader now accepts interface types to read into. The reader
will create an implementation on-the-fly of the interface and use this.
The ITokenizer interface has become public, making 3rd party extensions
better integrated. The exception class now contains the file context in
which it was thrown. An overloaded read() has been removed entirely. The
cell processor ParseBigDecimal has been added. A new exception
SuperCSVReflectionException replaces annoying Java checked exceptions.
More methods now use the "..." notation for easy use.

About: tinyap is a recursive descent parser with backup that outputs an
abstract syntax tree (AST). Unlike in most parsers, the grammar is data.
Tinyap uses an AST that represents a grammar to parse its input text. The
factory default for the grammar is tinyap's grammar description language
itself, so one can parse a grammar description and directly use the parse
output to parse some other text written in the described language. Tinyap
also features a plugin mechanism for grammars, which allows for dynamic
