[002] - Altse Internet Search Engine 23-01-2008
  by Jari Tuominen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jerofpanic/)
  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 01:49

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: ALTSE is an alternative search engine technology. It can index up
to a couple million Web pages. Altse does not aim to replace existing
search engine technologies such as Google, Yahoo, and so on. Instead, it
aims to provide an affordable alternative to index Web pages for small
size businesses and organizations.

Changes: A central configuration file has been put into use more widely in
all applications. The search engine has been tested and developed further
to achieve faster searches and faster indexing. Some major bugs in the
search have been identified and removed. Installation instructions were
added along with a couple of scripts that will aid in the installation,
although the process is still mainly manual. This will change in future
releases.

About: Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search
engine library written entirely in Java. It is suitable for nearly any
application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform.

Changes: Many new features, optimizations, and bug fixes have been added.
Indexing performance was significantly improved. Segment merging is done
in background threads. IndexReaders are refreshable. StandardAnalyzer was
made faster. Token API and TermVectorMapper were improved to customize how
term vectors are loaded. Live backups can be made (without pausing
indexing) with SnapshotDeletionPolicy. The CheckIndex tool was added to
test and recover a corrupt index. MergePolicy and MergeScheduler are
pluggable. A "partial" optimize(int maxNumSegments) method was added. A
contrib module was added for working with Wikipedia content.

  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 23:00

Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Asterisk is a hybrid TDM and packet voice PBX (Private Branch
eXchange) and IVR platform with ACD functionality. It acts as middleware
between the Internet (IAX, SIP, MGCP, Skinny, H.323), telephony channels
(like Zaptel, T1, PRI, E1, FXO, FXS, VoIP, VoFR, ISDN, modems, Internet
Phone Jack, etc.), and applications (like voice-mail, conferencing,
directories, MP3 players, intercoms, etc.). It has many advanced features
such as a codec translation API. The base distribution includes several
channel backends, as well as applications. However, the beauty of Asterisk
is its ability to be extended using its APIs, dynamic module loader, and
AGI scripting interface. End users can even write their own applications
that run on the system in C or any scripting language of their choice.

Changes: The Portuguese syntax for saying dates and times was fixed. The
sounds were updated. Many serious bugs were fixed. Code cleanup was done.

Office/Business

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.

[010] - CellWriter 1.3.2
  by Risujin (http://freshmeat.net/users/Risujin/)
  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 22:47

Adaptive Technologies
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition

About: CellWriter is a grid-entry natural handwriting input panel. As you
write characters into the cells, your writing is instantly recognized at
the character level. When you press 'Enter' on the panel, the input you
entered is sent to the currently focused application as if typed on the
keyboard. Writer-dependent, CellWriter learns your handwriting for
reliable recognition. Correcting preprocessor algorithms account for
digitizer noise, differing stroke order, direction, and number of strokes.
Unicode support enables you to write in any language.

Changes: A number of long standing bugs were fixed. A Pango-related memory
leak was fixed. The keyboard background color isn't black with GTK versions
earlier than 2.10 anymore. A profile corruption fix was added. Keyboard
mapping changes are detected while the program is running.

[011] - cgipaf 1.3.3 (Stable)
  by staf (http://freshmeat.net/users/stafwag/)
  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 13:26

Communications :: Email

About: cgipaf is a combination of three CGI programs. passwd.cgi, which
allow users to update their password, viewmailcfg.cgi, which allows users
to view their current mail configuration, and mailcfg.cgi, which updates
the mail configuration. All programs use PAM for user authentication. It
is possible to run a script to update SAMBA passwords or NIS configuration
when a password is changed. mailcfg.cgi creates a .procmailrc in the user's
home directory. A user with too many invalid logins can be locked. The
minimum and maximum UID can be set in the configuration file, so you can
specify a range of UIDs that are allowed to use cgipaf.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters

About: CMME (Content Management Made Easy) is a Web content management
system that aims to be easy to use, doesn't have many requirements, and is
still reasonably flexible. It doesn't need a database, doesn't have
extensive administrative needs, and works more or less like a wiki. New
pages can be made on the fly, rather than through an administrative page.

Changes: A 'settings' macro was added to the static plugin, which returns
the configuration settings for CMME (config.php). Translations were
reprogrammed to write out and read PHP code instead of serializing the
message hash. Translation files were moved to a subdirectory of the CMME
directory. License information was added to the source files.

[014] - cryptmount 2.2
  by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 13:11

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: cryptmount assists system administrators in setting up encrypted
filesystems based on the device mapper (dm-crypt) of GNU/Linux systems
using a 2.6-series kernel. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided
by the kernel and OpenSSL library) can be used to protect both the filing
system and the access key. The protected filing systems can reside in
either ordinary files or disk partitions. The package also supports
encrypted swap partitions, and automatic configuration on system boot-up.

Changes: Support for reading passwords via streams was added, to support
integration with scripts or GUIs. Various internal improvements were made
to terminal interaction, memory management, and error trapping.
Documentation of known problems was improved in the README file.

Communications :: File Sharing :: Direct Connect

About: DSHub is a hubsoft for the ADC Network. It uses the ADC protocol
(the next DC generation). It is multi-platform and has many interesting
features.

Changes: This release brings a lot of new stuff. ADC 1.0 is now officially
supported, so please note that older clients will have problems. Namely,
they wont be able to use passwords and keys will not be visible. All
clients should be updated to to Strongdc 2.1x or Apex DC 1.0B5 or DC++
0.704 or any other client that supports ADC 1.0. A multiport server is now

  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 23:01

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Boosting is a meta-learning approach that aims at combining an
ensemble of weak classifiers to form a strong classifier. Adaptive
Boosting (Adaboost) implements this idea as a greedy search for a linear
combination of classifiers by overweighting the examples that are
misclassified by each classifier. icsiboost implements Adaboost over
stumps (one-level decision trees) on discrete and continuous attributes
(words and real values). This approach is one of the most efficient and
simple to combine continuous and nominal values. This implementation is
aimed at allowing training from millions of examples by hundreds of
features in a reasonable amount of time/memory.

Changes: Options for easier feature and parameter selection were added.
The classifier can display F-measure and save a model at the iteration
maximizing it. At test time, posterior probabilities can be output.
Training can be interrupted and resumed later from a partial model.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: Local Media Browser lets you access your collection of digital
media files from a Web browser. It is designed for (but not limited to)
low-powered clients (like the Nintendo Wii) on low-resolution displays
(like TVs). It uses its own specialized Web server. It is fully
customizable through easy HTML-templates, CSS, and ini-files. It currently
supports picture and music files. It supports indexing and caching of
information (such as thumbnails and ID3 tags) for fast browsing as well as
on-the-fly gathering.

Changes: The music module is now running well. Local Media Browser now
runs its own multi-threaded Web server on a custom port, so there is no
need for a big Web server like Apache anymore. The templates were improved
and look much nicer now. They are also easier to improve, as a simple
template language is used.

  Thu, Jan 24th 2008 03:32

Software Development :: Assemblers
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: TinyaML is a virtual machine, a compiler, and a compiler- compiler,
powered by the abstract parser tinyap. It is endian-safe and allows easy
bindings of new C APIs into the virtual machine. The VM executes wordcode
with a virtual threading model and features a garbage collector. TinyaML
allows the user to compile and run assembly code, or plug new grammars for
higher-level languages into the parser and implement the methods to compile
their ASTs.

Changes: The software is still in beta stage. Most of the base features
are implemented but not optimized. It may still lack some API or framework
to code "drivers" to handle external synchronous blocking calls in an
asynchronous manner inside the VM (probably with using a Mutex per
blocking call). The source code features a Lua-like script language
compiler as a (big) example of use.

About: UnicodeDataBrowser is a browser for the UnicodeData.txt file, which
contains much useful information but is not easily read by humans. It
creates a scrollable table in which columns represent properties. The
table may be sorted on any column. Abbreviations are expanded and
characters cross-referenced in decomposition and casing fields are named.
Regular expression search restricted to a selected column is available.
The set of characters for which information is displayed may be restricted
to those characters matching a regular expression on a specified property.

Changes: Creation of the table is more than twice as fast.

features including shopping cart, subscriptions, forums, photo galleries,
FAQs, link lists, blogs, SQL reports, a Web services interface, and a very
configurable user privilege and profiling system.

including on pages outside of WebGUI. There are also a number of other
minor feature improvements and bugfixes, especially in the Calendar and
