Comparison of Free Software Shooters
by Leo Keselman (mailto:lkeselman
yahoo.com)
Section: Category Reviews
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 00:00
Last Fall, Joe Barr posted a feature on Linux.com titled "New Alien Arena
6.10 blows away its FPS competition", yet gave no real comparisons with
other similar games. This was done in the same style as Barr's previous
feature, "Tremulous: The best free software game ever?", which described
Tremulous, but also lacked comparisons and relations to other games. This
feature hopes to be a thorough comparison of the major Free Software
shooters.

[002] - Aloofix 0.4
by Aloof Schipperke (http://freshmeat.net/users/aloofschipperke/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 16:20
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: Aloofix is conceptually similar to the Ubuntu JeOS (Just enough
OS), but much more aggressive when it comes to the term "just enough". The
build environment consists of a collection of Makefiles, scripts, and
configuration files capable of creating a bootable ISO image. This ISO
image contains a small set of scripts and utility programs for installing
Aloofix on a primary hard drive in a VM environment. The build environment
provides the raw materials for creating and provisioning a set of guest
instances for VirtualBox, VMWare, and Qemu.
Changes: This initial release is capable of creating a working
distribution.

Communications :: WAP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Anyterm provides a terminal emulator on a Web page using Javascript
and an Apache module. The module forks a shell and communicates with the
script using XMLHTTP on port 80, or securely using SSL. This provides you
with shell access to your machine from almost any Web browser, even when
firewalls are in the way. Experimental features include support for
standalone operation without Apache, and the my.anyterm.org service
provides access without the need to install anything on your servers.
Changes: This release fixes a potential segfault in the stand-alone
daemon, and improves handling of the alt-gr key on some non-English
keyboards. It also makes it possible to send ctrl-^, which is filtered by
browsers, by typing ctrl-. .

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Software Development
About: Arachnida is an embeddable Web server. It uses the OpenSSL library
and consists of a small framework for networking that allows you to
asynchronously accept and handle connections using a "new connection
handler" to handle new connections and a "data handler" to handle incoming
data. This makes it possible to add support for any TCP/IP based protocol
by just adding a handler. A test suite is included.
Changes: This release adds Damos, an HTTP(s) client library. Sending an
HTTP request and receiving a response is easy with this library.
Documentation has not yet been added for this feature, which was released
early at a client's request.

by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 23:04
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1,
RSA, and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and
several common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high
level interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and
includes a substantial tutorial and API reference.
Changes: New arguments to configure.pl, --cc, --os, and --cpu, allow the
user to individually override parts of the build target (rather than
requiring a tuple of all three arguments, even if only one autodetected
portion was incorrect). IPv4 addresses are supported in the
SubjectAlternativeName extension of X.509 certificates. Unbuffered I/O is
used to read from entropy devices like /dev/random. The default
malloc-based allocator no longer goes through the Pool_Allocator
abstraction.

[016] - Free-SA 1.4.3
by Sapon Oleg (http://freshmeat.net/users/xsaper/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 22:52
Internet :: Log Analysis
About: Free-SA is tool for statistical analysis of daemons' log files,
similar to SARG. Its main advantages over SARG are much better speed
(7x-20x), more support for reports, and W3C compliance of generated
HTML/CSS reports. It can be used to help control traffic usage, to control
Internet access security policies, to investigate security incidents, to
evaluate server efficiency, and to detect troubles with configuration.
Changes: The horisontal axis of a user graphs report (UGR) will be
automatically scaled to best fit the actual period (hours of day, days of
month, and months of year). Support for filtering by method, code, stat
codes, and bytes fields to global and local filters was added. Some other
tiny changes related to speed and correctness were made.

by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 22:56
Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.
Changes: The ENABLE_OUTPUT_ACCESS keyword was added to access.conf file
parsing. This provides a configuration gate for the iptables OUTPUT chain
that is similar to the ENABLE_FORWARD_ACCESS keyword, and adds the abiliy
to control which access.conf SOURCE blocks interface to the OUTPUT chain.
Installation support was improved for various Linux distributions,
including Fedora 8 and Ubuntu 7.10. The test suite was updated to include
OUTPUT chain tests, to reference access.conf files in the test/conf/
directory, and to perform SPA packet format validation tests by parsing
fwknopd output.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management :: Link Checking
About: GNU Wget is a utility for noninteractive download of files from
the Web. It supports HTTP and FTP protocols, as well as retrieval through
HTTP proxies. It can follow HTML links, download many pages, and convert
the links for local viewing. It can also mirror FTP hierarchies or only
those files that have changed. Wget has been designed for robustness
over slow network connections; if a download fails due to a network
problem, it will keep retrying until the whole file has been retrieved.
Changes: The license was changed to GPLv3+. Improvements were made to the
HTTP password authentication code, bringing it a little closer to RFC
compliance. Basic support was added for respecting filenames specified via
"Content-Disposition" headers. An --ignore-case option was added to make
wildcard- and suffix-matching case-insensitive. The --spider feature is
working again (as it was broken in previous release). Many bugs were
fixed.

About: phpMyPhotoGallery is a Web-based photo album with a "Windows
Explorer" look-n-feel. It is designed to make it easy for people with
organized directories of photos to upload them in one go. Thumbnails are
generated on the fly.
Changes: This version adds back most of the API functions available in
version 1.0. The API allows you to upload photos from your own
application. In addition, the phpMyPhotoGallery has been structured to
allow upgrades with fewer problems.

[030] - Pinot 0.82
by Fabrice Colin (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinf/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 02:50
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: Pinot is a D-Bus service that crawls, indexes your documents, and
monitors them for changes. It is also a GTK-based user interface that
enables you to query the index built by the service or your favorite Web
engine, and display and analyze the results. It makes full use of advanced
indexing and search facilities offered by Xapian, features language
detection, dynamic document summaries, easy labelling of documents, and
internal support for common file types. The D-Bus interface allows easy
integration with other applications.
Changes: The Xapian-related code was moved into a separate back-end.
Several issues were fixed with query stemming, which is now independent of
the language filter. Viewed documents are added to the desktop
environment's list of recently used files. When the index needs updating,
the user is now told on every run until they click the "Don't warn me
again" check box. The Status window shows which engines are available. The
Sherlock plugin parser was fixed. Support for Xesam languages was updated
to RC1. The D-Bus interface was expanded. The Dutch, Spanish, and Swedish
translations were updated.

heart of the project is libpws, a general library for reading and writing
passwordsafe compatible files. Currently, passwordsafe files format v2 and
passwordsafe files format v3.2 are supported. The other part of the project
is pws, a Qt-based GUI built around libpws which aims to be an easy-to-use
but powerful passwordsafe implementation.
Changes: A serious bug that lead to a segfault when the password history
is switched on was fixed along with some minor bugs and usability issues.

[035] - STX B+ Tree 0.8.1
by Timo Bingmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/tbingmann/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 03:09
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The STX B+ Tree package is a set of C++ template classes
implementing a B+ tree key/data container in main memory. The classes are
designed as drop-in replacements of the STL containers set, map, multiset,
and multimap, and follow their interfaces very closely. By packing multiple
value pairs into each node of the tree, the B+ tree reduces heap
fragmentation and utilizes cache-line effects better than the standard
red-black binary tree. The tree algorithms are based on the implementation
in Cormen, Leiserson, and Rivest's Introduction into Algorithms, Jan
Jannink's paper, and other algorithm resources. The classes contain
extensive assertion and verification mechanisms to ensure the
implementation's correctness by testing the tree invariants.
Changes: This release fixed a possibly illegal memory access during a
find() or derived lookup call, if the queried key is larger than any item
contained in the tree.

[036] - TextCite: Publication Quotation Manager 1.0.3
by Erik Norvelle (http://freshmeat.net/users/enorvelle/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 15:29
Education
Information Management
About: TextCite is a program for organizing and commenting textual
citations from texts (books, articles, or other published works) for use
in producing scientific or academic publications. You can organize by
publication, author, category, or outline. It works with bibliographic
management programs like Citation, EndNote, RefWorks, and BibTeX,
providing important text/citation management capabilities that these
programs lack, while still allowing for rapid footnote and bibliography
generation by means of your favorite bibliography manager. It also exports
to PDF and Word (RTF).
Changes: This is a minor feature addition release. Accelerator keys were
added for main menu actions. A popup menu was added to add formatting tags
to the citation text fields. The option to have a CiteBook automatically
load upon program startup was added.

[037] - The Launcher 2.3.1
by Alte (http://freshmeat.net/users/alte/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 01:12
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Tools
About: The Launcher is an innovative GNOME panel applet or stand-alone
application launcher automatically adapting to your habits. The ultimate
goal is to make it possible to run any application with as few clicks as
possible. This means tracking your favorite applications, and not forcing
you to mark or organize them by hand. Preferences change with time, and
The Launcher responds to that automatically. It delivers a simple, clean,
and usable interface with advanced features like 'search as you type' and
'smart search', and requires zero configuration effort. It should be
especially handy on touch screens and in keyboard-only scenarios.
Changes: GNOME panel applet installation fixes and SuSE Linux support.

by Michael Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/tipt0e/)
Sat, Jan 26th 2008 23:05
About: uxdstools is a set of Unix directory service tools. It is a suite
of command tools to administer POSIX user and group accounts in an LDAP
directory. It is similar in spirit to the useradd/mod/del tools found on
Linux and Solaris, the pw tools on BSD, the mk|ch|rmuser/group tools on
AIX, etc. However, instead of manipulating local accounts, uxdstools
manages POSIX-type accounts that can be found in LDAP directory services
installations, namely those with posixAccount and posixGroup attributes.
Changes: Kerberos ticket fetching was added.

one for each project, and then produces nicely formatted summary reports.
Flexible rules can be used to specify repeated projects. Context, project,
and date views are supported and output can be filtered in a variety of
ways. Output can optionally be printed or sent to standard output in
several formats. Commands are provided for marking tasks complete, opening
files for editing, and backing up project files.
Changes: Configuration settings were added to ~/.yeagtdrc which determine
which columns are displayed, their order, titles and widths, and whether
vertical and/or horizontal rules are displayed in the graphical interface.
