Software Development :: Documentation

About: APIviz is a JavaDoc doclet which extends the Java standard doclet.
It generates comprehensive UML-like class and package diagrams for quick
understanding of the overall API structure.

Changes: The "-sourceclasspath" option was added to help a user to specify
the class path of the output directories which contain the compiled
classes. APIviz should now work fine with Eclipse with the
"-sourceclasspath" option.

[009] - Enblend 3.2
  by Andrew Mihal (http://freshmeat.net/users/mihal/)
  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 07:36

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Enblend is a postprocessing tool for creating panoramic images.
After you align image features using a program like Hugin, there are often
photometric problems that lead to ugly seams in the final composite.
Enblend blends away these seams using a multiresolution spline. This
technique gives good results on both low spatial frequency objects (sky and
clouds) and high spatial frequency objects (trees and houses).

Changes: This release introduces Enfuse, a new tool for simplified HDR
image creation. Enfuse merges differently exposed images into a nice output
image, without going through the complex steps of intermediate HDR file
creation and tonemapping. Enfuse can also be used to create extended
depth-of-field focus stacks. This release also includes minor feature
enhancements and bugfixes for Enblend.

  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 15:32

Communications
Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: FlowPlayer is a video player for Flash Video in FLV and H.264
formats. The UI is clean, simple, and customizable. The player is easy to

[013] - GNU ddrescue 1.9-pre1 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 17:56

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output file
if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file, it
tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: The new option "--domain-logfile" has been added. This release is
also available in lzip format. To download the lzip version, just replace
".bz2" with ".lz" in the tar.bz2 package name.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Kate is a codec for karaoke and text encapsulation for Ogg. Most of
the time, this would be multiplexed with audio/video to carry subtitles,
song lyrics (with or without karaoke data), etc, but it doesn't have to be.
A possible use of a lone Kate stream would be an e-book. Moreover, the
motion feature gives Kate a powerful means to describe arbitrary curves, so
hand drawing of shapes can be achieved. This was originally meant for
karaoke use, but can be used for any purpose. Motions can be attached to
various semantics, like position or color, so scrolling or fading text can
be defined.

Changes: The granule rate numerator and denominator are now unsigned.
kateenc can be given comments on the command line to add to the output
stream. Some improvements were made in srt parsing. katedec now writes srt
times using the more widespread "," instead of ".". The build system was
improved.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: m2vmp2cut is frame accurate (currently PAL) MPEG2 video (M2V file)
with accompanied MP2 audio cutter. Frame accuracy is achieved by
re-encoding video around cutpoints. Audio is cut from a separate MP2 file
at positions that keep A/V sync as good as possible (maximum sync
difference is around 10-15 milliseconds compared to the source).

Changes: This release fixes seeking to offset zero (-sb 0) in the m2vtoyuv
command.

[029] - Manent 0.10.15
  by Sasha (http://freshmeat.net/users/gsasha/)
  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 14:42

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Manent is an algorithmically strong backup and archival program. It
features efficient backup to anything that looks like storage. Currently it
supports plain filesystems ("directories"), FTP, and SFTP. Planned are
Amazon S3, optical disks, and email (SMTP and IMAP). It can work (making
progress towards finishing a backup) over a slow and unreliable network. It
can offer online access to the contents of the backup. Backed up storage is
completely encrypted. Backup is incremental, including changed parts of
large files. Moved, renamed, and duplicate files will not require
additional storage. Several computers can use the same storage for backup,
automatically sharing data. Both very large and very small files are
supported efficiently. Manent does not rely on timestamps of the remote
system to detect changes.

Changes: This version now uses a dual GPL/commercial license. This is the
first version to be generated by an automatic release script. A group for
manent users was created at http://groups.google.com/group/manent.

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: Presage (formerly known as Soothsayer) is an intelligent predictive
text entry platform. It exploits redundant information embedded in natural
languages to generate predictions. Its modular and pluggable architecture
allows its language model to be extended and customized to utilize
statistical, syntactic, and semantic information sources.

Changes: This release is able to learn "on the fly" from the context and
the text currently being entered. The smoothed n-gram predictive plugin
dynamically learns from the current context, while generating new
predictions. This release provides better predictions by incrementally
increasing the depth of prediction generation, and incorporates several
bugfixes to the context changes detection code. It includes a new dejavu
predictive plugin, and a new GTK application whose aim is to augment any
other application with presage predictive functionality.

[043] - safe-rm 0.3
  by Francois Marier (http://freshmeat.net/users/fmarier/)
  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 07:32

Utilities

About: safe-rm is intended to prevent the accidental deletion of important
files by replacing /bin/rm with a wrapper which checks the given arguments
against a configurable blacklist of files and directories that should never
be removed. Users who attempt to delete one of these protected files or
directories will not be able to do so and will be shown a warning message
instead. Protected paths can be set both at the site and user levels.

Changes: This release fixes a bug which caused safe-rm to skip the full
blacklist checks when dealing with certain files and directories in the
working directory. Previously, unless the argument you passed to safe-rm
contained a slash, it would not get the real (absolute) path of the file
before checking against the blacklist.

Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Data profiling is the process of examining the data available in
existing data sources (e.g. databases, applications, files, etc.) and
collecting statistics and information about this data. Data profiling
enables the assessment of the quality level of the data contained in the
information system, according to a defined set of metrics and goals. Talend
Open Profiler allows business users or data management staff to define a
set of indicators for each data element that needs to be analyzed or
monitored. It produces sophisticated reports and graphs that let users
gauge at a glance the level of quality of the data and the status of the
indicators that were defined.

Changes: The database structure can be refreshed. Support for DB2 and
PostgreSQL has been added. The table analysis menu is now working
correctly. The frequency table is now working correctly on Oracle.
Indicator selection is easier with the ability to select all columns at

[052] - WordPress Release 2.6.2

  Tue, Sep 9th 2008 15:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architected personal publishing
system. While primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, WordPress
is also a flexible CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In
addition to the basic blog functions, it also has an integrated link
manager (e.g. for blogrolls), file attachments, XFN support, support for
stand-alone pages, Atom and RSS feeds for both content and comments,
blogging API support (Atom Publishing Protocol, Blogger, MetaWeblog, and
Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced cruft-free URL
generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin API.

Changes: This is a security and bugfix release. All users are encouraged
to upgrade. There are two security-related fixes in this version. The first
is to guard against a weakness in the random number generation in PHP's
mt_rand() function. The second is to guard against relaxed field-length
checking in MySQL. By taking advantage of these two weaknesses, it may be
possible for an attacker to gain unauthorized access to your Web
application. More details are available on the WordPress Development Blog.
