[001] - Asymptote 1.54
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: The filltype of three-dimensional labels is now respected when
render=0. Multiple file batch mode under MS Windows was fixed. The
reverse(guide) and guide examination routines were fixed. A reverse(guide3)
routine was added. Curved cyclic paths of size 1 were fixed. Fork is now
used by default under MS Windows pending stable CYGWIN POSIX thread
support; this can be overridden with settings.threads=true. The need to
remove latexusage_.pre along with latexusage-* and latexusage.aux when
switching between latex and pdflatex usage was documented.

[002] - Back In Time 0.8.12
  by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/danleweb/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:30

System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: A German translation was added. SnapshotNameDialog was added. The
ability to name or remove a snapshot in the main toolbar was added. The way
it detects if the mainwindow is the ative window was changed. The toolbars
now only show icons. The Spanish translation was updated.

  by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 09:34

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms, including AES,
DES, SHA-1, RSA, DSA, Diffie-Hellman, and many others. It also supports
X.509 certificates and CRLs, and PKCS #10 certificate requests, and has a
high level filter/pipe message processing system. The library is easily
portable to most systems and compilers, and includes a substantial tutorial
and API reference.

Changes: This is the third release candidate for Botan 1.8.0. This release
fixes a bug that prevented interoperability using the EMSA3/PKCS1v1.5
signature padding scheme with the SHA-512 hash function. A bug preventing
the EGD/PRNGD entropy poller from working properly was also fixed. A
variant of EMSA3 called EMSA3_Raw (or CKM_RSA_PKCS in PKCS #11) was added,
as was support for using the SHA-224 hash function with the EMSA2 and EMSA3
padding schemes.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: This release adds index-specific spell checking. It fixes
highlighter highlighting without summarizing. It adds an optional classpath
for indexing to resolve a Tomcat JSDK classpath issue. It simplifies
narrowBy rendering logic. It improves search performance by optimizing on
Facet Search.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Internet

About: DynaStop is a utility to examine IPv4 based addresses for Exim and
procmail for the purpose of filtering based upon patterns defined by the
administrator. This can be a pivotal factor in email filtering and server
load management, since dynamic IP addresses are typically used for dial-up,
DHCP, and DSL accounts. All of which have a designated mail exchange server
through which all outbound mail flows as defined with many, if not most,
large Internet service providers.

Changes: This release adds real-time blacklist testing with threshold
limits. An IP will be listed as Code 3 if it is listed in at least X RBLs.
X can be set by the user, with a minimum value of 2. This should be a good
way to protect against false positives while still taking advantage of what
RBLs have to offer. A few minor bugfixes related to MaxTTL are included.

[014] - FastFormat 0.2.1 (beta 1)
  by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:33

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Localization

About: FastFormat is a C/C++ output and formatting library whose design
parameters are complete type-safety, efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (to any
platform or compiler), and it upholds the C tradition of you only pay for
what you use. FastFormat supports output and formatting of statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogeneous types. FastFormat writes
to output "sinks", which can be of arbitrary type.

Changes: Per-handler information (both ill-formed and mismatched) was
changed to use the paired handler function and the opaque parameter,
allowing user-level chaining of handlers. Parameters of type void* (and all
cv-forms) are supported. The ignore_unreferenced_arguments_scope scoping
class, which causes unreferenced arguments to be ignored in the current
thread (or the whole process, in the case of single-threaded operation),
was added. Several examples were adjusted to work around the
template/namespace defect in GCC.

  by MatzeBraun (http://freshmeat.net/users/MatzeBraun/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 18:11

Software Development :: Compilers

About: cparser is a recursive descent C99 parser written in C99. It
contains a lexer, parser, constructs an AST, and does semantic analysis. It
is currently used as a frontend to the libFirm intermediate representation,
but can be used independently. It supports lots of GNU extensions: enough
to parse Linux/BSD system headers and compile typical C projects with it.
It is able to bootstrap itself, and compiles and runs the spec CINT2000
without problems.

Changes: Improved error recovery and more robust semantic checks. Several
warning messages have been clarified. More GNU extensions and gcc compiler
switches are supported. Some libc builtins can be handled and inlined by
the compiler now.

[023] - media hive 0.9.2
  by Doug Crane (http://freshmeat.net/users/0dcrane/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 15:32

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video

About: The media hive is a streaming media server and Web-based
content/playlist manager. It emphasizes usability by making it easy to
manage a media catalog that contains multiple media types (mp3, mp4, ogg,
flac, mpg, and avi), and by providing a very full-featured playlist. It
also emphasizes extensibility by making it easy to develop new media
parsers, playlist actions, event handlers, skins, and more. It has an
entire custom tag library devoted to skin development, making it simple for
the non-developer to create radically different Web-based user interfaces.
It has no installation dependencies and runs on multiple platforms.

Changes: This release features a new Web-based user interface that merges
all the catalog navigation modes of the previous media hive interfaces into
one consistent UI. Field-level view configuration is now supported.
Cataloging and on-the-fly reencoding support were added for FLAC, Ogg
Vorbis, and MP4/AAC. The ability to run as a Windows service or as a daemon
under Linux/Unix/OS X was added.

[024] - Monkeysphere 0.22
  by zygut (http://freshmeat.net/users/zygut/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 21:12

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Monkeysphere enables you to use the OpenPGP web of trust to
verify ssh connections. SSH key-based authentication is tried-and-true, but
it lacks a true public key infrastructure for key certification,
revocation, and expiration. Monkeysphere is a framework that uses the
OpenPGP web of trust for these PKI functions. It can be used in both
directions: for users to get validated host keys, and for hosts to
authenticate users.

Changes: This release adds info log output when a new key is added to the
known_hosts file. It adds some useful output to the ssh-proxycommand for
"marginal" cases where keys are found for the host but do not have full
validity. It forces ssh-keygen to read from stdin to get the SSH key
fingerprint. It will automatically output two copies of the host's public
key: one a standard SSH public key file, and the other a minimal OpenPGP
key with just the latest valid self-sig. In debian/control, the alternate
dependency has been corrected from procfile to procmail (which provides
/usr/bin/lockfile).

[026] - NoMachine NX 3.3.0-3 (Node)
  by NXAdmin (http://freshmeat.net/users/NXAdmin/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:28

Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server and desktop virtualization
system based on the X11 protocol. NX is an order of magnitude faster than
VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. In addition,
NX translates and embeds the MS Windows Terminal Server and VNC protocols
into X/NX, enabling users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and VNC
sessions. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11 proxying
agents implementing efficient compression and optimized transport of X11,
SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio and video over the
Internet.

Changes: This version solves some issues which may prevent printing from
working correctly when multi-node support is enabled. The package also
includes solutions for problems affecting the NX Core. For example, the NX
session could fail during the reconnection procedure when a font is
missing; NX agent could handle resize at reconnection in an incorrect way;
and painting errors may occur when screen areas beyond the current viewport
become viewable in NX Client for Windows.

[027] - NScripts 3.5
  by Christopher Bratusek (http://freshmeat.net/users/Flashrider/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 09:31

Utilities

About: NScripts is a set of Nautilus scripts for several purposes, like
changing the background and the splash image, copying and moving files
(similar to Konqueror's context menu actions), creating and checking MD5
sums, creating a diff of two selected files, sending shortcuts to any
place, creating menu entries from .desktop files, opening all selected
files in GEdit, opening a terminal with the current directory as the
working directory, and shredding files.

Changes: The Apt Cache script was added. The WhichPKG scripts were renamed
and moved to the Admin section.

[028] - NTFS-3G 1.5130
  by Szabolcs Szakacsits (http://freshmeat.net/users/szaka/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 15:16

System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: NTFS-3G is a stable read/write NTFS driver. It is available for
over 180 Linux distributions and the default read/write NTFS driver for
most major ones. It has been ported to many other operating systems like
FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, Haiku, and Mac OS X, and to little/big-endian,
32/64-bit, and MMU-less computer architectures.

Changes: Reading a data storage with permanent or temporary physical
damage or a partial read system call could result in ignoring the low level
hardware error and returning invalid data. This release fixes this issue.

[029] - Otk 0.80
  by kindman (http://freshmeat.net/users/kindman/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 15:13

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: Otk is a portable widget library for making graphical user
interfaces for C programs. It emphasizes simplicity for the application
programmer without eliminating capability. Based on OpenGL, Otk supports
Linux, Unix, and other OSs neutrally and efficiently. It is simple and
compact, and it strives for easy compilation and linking to other
applications. In seeking to address several issues associated with earlier
graphics APIs, Otk explores some interesting methods, such as
window-relative layout instead of pixel-based layout.

Changes: Pull-down menus were made to fit within the screen, even when
opened too close to the edge. An ability was added to suggest alternate (or
recent) directories in the file-browser. Otk now adaptively improves
rendering quality for the best display with reasonable speed on given
hardware. A function was added to request better quality or better speed. A
function was added to right-justify formbox text. A makefile was added for
compiling to an object file for linking into applications.

[032] - SQLObject 0.9.8 (Old stable)
  by Oleg Broytmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/phd/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 15:28

Database
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries

About: SQLObject is an object-relational mapper, i.e., a library that will
wrap your database tables in Python classes, and your rows in Python
instances. It currently supports MySQL through the 'MySQLdb' package,
PostgreSQL through the 'psycopg' package, SQLite, Firebird, MaxDB (SAP DB),
MS SQL, and Sybase. It should support Python versions back to 2.2.

Changes: The interpretation of strings in the DB URI was changed for
boolean parameters: "0", "no", "off", and "false" are now interpreted as
False. A bug was fixed with incorrect handling of calls like
connectionForURI(dburi, cache=False) when dburi already contains some
parameters in the URI. decimal.to_eng_string() was converted to str to work
around a bug in Python 2.5.2. A minor bug in SQLiteConnection that fails to
parse Enum columns was fixed.

[034] - Sutekh 0.6.0 (Stable)
  by Simon Cross (http://freshmeat.net/users/hodgestar/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:23

Games/Entertainment

About: Sutekh is a card collection manager for the game called "Vampire:
the Eternal Struggle" (VtES). Card information is stored in an SQL database
backend. Current functionality includes parsing information from the
official VtES card list and ruling HTML files, exporting of decks to HTML
and ARDB XML files, flexible filtering of lists of cards, backing up and
restoring of the card database, configurable selection of which card
information is displayed, and basic deck analysis.

Changes: This is the first major stable release since the 0.4.x series.
The way cards and card sets are handled internally has been reworked to be
more intuitive to the user. Card sets may now have parent sets, and much
functionality has been updated to make use of this new feature. The card
filtering interface was rewritten to be easier to use. Sutekh has also
gained a built-in manual and tutorial.

[040] - Thyrd 0.2.0
  by Phil Mercurio (http://freshmeat.net/users/mercurio/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:01

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Thyrd is an experimental, reflective, visual programming language
and environment. In Thyrd, both data and code are stored in cells situated
in nested two-dimensional grids. All operations the user can perform to
edit the structure are implemented as operators in the Thyrd language, thus
a Thyrd program can inspect and modify itself or other programs in the same
space. Thyrd belongs to the Forth family of languages. It most resembles
Joy in that it uses quotation and combinators to implement iteration and
recursion.

Changes: The code is somewhat unstable, but works well enough to make it
through the screencasts. A Windows executable is available, but it should
work anywhere Tcl/Tk, TkZinc, and Poet are available.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: TM++ is an embedded, portable, persistent Topic Maps engine. It is
designed to work according to the ISO standards for TMDM 1.0 and XTM
1.0/2.0 on Windows and most POSIX-compliant operating systems like Unix and
Linux. It has interfaces for C++, ALLEGROCL, CHICKEN, CLISP, CFFI, C#,
Guile, Java, Lua, Modula 3, Mzscheme, Ocaml, Octave, Perl, PHP4, PHP5,
Pike, Python, R (aka GNU S), Ruby, Lisp S-Expressions, Tcl, Common
Lisp/UFFI, and XML.

Changes: This version now supports autoconf for more OS portable building.
All reported bugs have been fixed. New features, such as a memory manager,
have been added. The library is faster and require less internal memory to
run. A simple "Hello world" C++ example has been added to make TM++ easier
to get started with as a developer. A Python example has been added for the
SWIG users.

[042] - Word War vi 0.23
  by Stephen Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/StephenCameron/)
  Mon, Dec 1st 2008 15:24

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Word War vi is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up '80s style arcade
game. You pilot your "vi"per craft through core memory, rescuing lost .swp
files, avoiding OS defenses, and wiping out those memory hogging emacs
processes. When all the lost .swp files are rescued, head for the socket
which will take you to the next node in the cluster.

Changes: "xmas mode" was added in which you not only get to blow stuff up
and rescue your buddies, as usual, but you get to do so while piloting
Santa's sleigh and delivering presents.

Web-specific implementation details. Under the hood, the library uses the
latest techniques (AJAX) to handle user events and update the Web page.

Changes: Besides many bugfixes, this release includes the following new
features: customizable loading indicators (with two shipped
implementations), an MVC proxy model class (WSortFilterProxyModel), support
for drag and drop of item selections in WTreeView, new WPopupMenu and
WPopupMenuItem classes that implement a typical context menu, and the
ability to embed a Wt application in an existing Web site or Web
application using a "WidgetSet" mode.
