Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: The pdflatex texengine was fixed. The default MSDOS "start-in"
directory is now %USERPROFILE%, for compatibility with the MS Windows Vista
operating system. Temporary files are now generated in the directory
specified by the -outname (-o) command-line option, so that write access to
the current directory is no longer required. Various font size problems
were fixed. The axis coverage calculation was improved. An object(Label,
envelope, ...) constructor was added, along with support for object
transformation and alignment. Clipping is now allowed across page
boundaries.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: CocoXml is a combination of programming language scanner/parser
generator (defined by .atg) and XML language scanner/parser generator
(defined by .xatg). And the generated sources can be updated by updating
the .atg or .xatg.
Changes: All sources were reimplemented in pure C. The original Coco
grammar was integrated with the original CocoXml grammar into one binary,
and they are distinguished by extension. The algorithm was split from
output schemes completely, so the algorithm should not need to be
reimplemented by the target programming language anymore. The "dump", "c",
and "cxml" output schemes are supported. An ebuild for gentoo users is
provided.

Sun, Dec 14th 2008 23:50
Multimedia
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Kate is a codec for karaoke and text encapsulation for Ogg. Most of
the time, this would be multiplexed with audio/video to carry subtitles,
song lyrics (with or without karaoke data), etc, but it doesn't have to be.
A possible use of a lone Kate stream would be an e-book. Moreover, the
motion feature gives Kate a powerful means to describe arbitrary curves, so
hand drawing of shapes can be achieved. This was originally meant for
karaoke use, but can be used for any purpose. Motions can be attached to
various semantics, like position or color, so scrolling or fading text can
be defined.
Changes: kateenc can now read an event's text from an external file. There
is new code in the UTF-8 decoder to protect against overlong sequences.
More tests have been added to make check.

[025] - MirBSD Korn Shell R36b
by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
Sun, Dec 14th 2008 13:03
System :: Shells
About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with the primary focus on scripting. It is intended to
be portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well as
bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS, FreeWRT, and MidnightBSD
projects. The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte
Order Marks are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well
as all pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible
with the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits), has no limit on array
sizes, and incorporates some other useful builtins and features. While
being already fast and small (without losing functionality), flags to make
it even smaller can be given at compile time. An interactive shell reads
"~/.mkshrc" on startup.
Changes: New ports were made for QNX, nwcc, and (an incomplete one) for
Haiku. A native LLVM build was added (with either llvm-gcc or clang).
autoconf-time compiler errors are hidden from build scanners. MKSH_SMALL
builds were shrunk even more. __typeof__ is not used. Statements can be
used as expressions. An alias expansion bug was fixed. bashiop use inside a
function was fixed. strings.h is pulled if it exists. Some format string
warnings, dead code, and casts were cleaned up. Lint hints were added. The
dot.mkshrc and regression test suite were optimized.

creating ntop-centric monitoring applications, and RRD for persistently
storing traffic statistics.
Changes: Fixes were made for detecting buffer overflows. Fixes were made
for avoiding a crash in case of low memory. Tiny icon change was done.
Embedded perl fixes were made. GeoIP installation was added into the

[035] - Remote HellaNZB GUI 0.9.1
by NothernLights (http://freshmeat.net/users/NorthernLights/)
Sun, Dec 14th 2008 17:52
Communications :: Usenet News
About: Remote HellaNZB GUI is a small GTK+ application to control your
HellaNZB daemon. It's well integrated into your desktop. In a few clicks,
you can manage your remote (or local) queue: add NZB files from your
computer or from their newzbin.com ID, set priorities, see the progress of
your downloads, etc. Unlike other similar projects, this one can truly add
NZB files from your computer to your remote daemon; to do so, it copies
them through SSH. For Remote HellaNZB GUI to work you need a running
HellaNZB daemon; it does not configure it for you.
Changes: Bugfixes and new features on user requests. This version
introduces the SSH tunneling option to remotely and securely control your
HellaNZB daemon over the Internet. It also adds more XML-RPC threaded,
calls so the interface is more responsive. Finally, it adds a notification
area icon.

[043] - SPIP 2.0
by Jacques PYRAT (http://freshmeat.net/users/jpyrat/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: SPIP is an open-source, free publication system on the Internet,
mainly targeted at individuals, informal groups, and non-profit
organizations. It allows contributive writing and managing of Web sites
having a magazine-like structure (i.e., articles and short stories
contained in nested sections), while not needing any HTML skills (except
for defining the layout templates). There are many additional features:
public forums, petitions, keywords, syndication, an integrated search
engine, and more.
Changes: More translations were added. The private interface was unified
using AJAX. A programming interface for SQL Server (MySQL, Postgres,
SQLite) was added. New forms were added for using on the site in public and
private areas. The interface for documents and forums was improved. Several
databases can be accessed from a single skeleton. Models and pagination in
AJAX can be effected by simply adding a new criterion. Hierarchical URLs
were implemented. Automatic compaction of CSS and JavaScript files is done.
The filter system and automatic installer were ameliorated.

[044] - storebackup 2.0.1
by Heinz-Josef Claes (http://freshmeat.net/users/hjclaes/)
Sun, Dec 14th 2008 15:15
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: storebackup is a backup utility that stores files on other disks.
It includes several optimizations that reduce the disk space needed and
improve performance, and unifies the advantages of traditional full and
incremental backups. Depending on its contents, every file is stored only
once on disk. It includes tools for analyzing backup data and restoring.
Once archived, files are accessible by mounting filesystems (locally, or
via Samba or NFS). It is easy to install and configure.
Changes: The keepLastOfWeek option was ignored by storeBackupDel.pl if it
was set in the configuration file. Therefore, too many old backups were
deleted, but only if you use storeBackupDel.pl. This release also corrects
a long term minor bug in the progressReport option for statistical output.
