[001] - Absolute OS 12.2.0
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Fri, Dec 19th 2008 21:28
About: Absolute Linux is a lightweight Slackware derivative that uses an
Icewm, pcmanfm, ROX-Filer, ivman, and others to create a lightweight yet
easy to use distribution. Installation is text-based but simplified, and
all packages are installed at once. It can run on a Pentium II and above,
including SMP systems. A minimum 128MB RAM is recommended. It features ease
of browsing any connected device in pcmanfm and an auto-popup menu for
inserted playable media. "Restricted" codecs are available to those
eligible via a root-user installer. There is a large range of software
available, including OpenOffice, Mplayer, GIMP, and K3B.
Changes: This version is current with the Slack 12.2 release. There are no
base installer changes since rc1, but absolute-current in the repository is
updated to 3.0.5. Absolute now has a new homepage, an additional
repository, and a new forum. FTP on absolutelinux.org also has an /incoming
folder to allow user uploads of packages.

[002] - ACE 5.6.7 (Development)
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Fri, Dec 19th 2008 21:15
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that helps you develop and deploy high-performance
networked applications faster and with less code to write and maintain. ACE
is especially useful for systems that use network and/or inter-process
communications and that take advantage of multithreading. While the ACE
source code is free, that's not the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's
wrappers and higher-level patterns help you develop your software quickly
and portably, helping you to complete your projects on time and within
budget.
Changes: Assorted minor enhancements and bugfixes.

to Adito. Extension Store is available and enabled by default. Source and
binary releases. Localization support using the adito-language module. A
Finnish translation. Most wrapper problems are now fixed for good.
SSL-Explorer PAM has been converted to Adito. Many fixes to build files.

Desktop Environment :: Tools
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: Bashrun is a simple application launcher for X11. It runs a bash
session within a small xterm window, thus conveniently providing all the
common bash features like readline, tab completion, and history.
Optionally, in combination with xdotool, the terminal is kept running in
the background, reducing startup time and saving system resources. A number
of other common XTerminals like urxvt or mrxvt are also supported. Other
features include key bindings for resizing the terminal on the fly.
Changes: This release adds sub-pattern substitution for handlers, an
option to specify commands to be run in a terminal automatically, key
bindings for Google search queries and dictionary lookups, and many more
improvements under the hood.

by Alex Sisson (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexsisson/)
Fri, Dec 19th 2008 19:04
About: bosh takes the output of the specified command and displays it
using a simple ncurses interface. Actions can be configured and run using
the currently selected line of the output as part of the action. An example
is to use ps as the main command and kill as an action. Then, using bosh,
the ps output can be browsed to find a particular process, which is then
killed.
Changes: This release adds new options to specify shell and a header area,
new variables for commands and actions ($BOSHPID and $BOSHPPID), and a man
page.

About: F*EX (Frams' Fast File EXchange) is a Web based service to send

recipients needs storage on the server only once.
Changes: Easier sub-user creation. Support for non-ASCII-filenames (UTF-8)
on download. fexsend and fexget with HTTPS support. autodelete is
configurable by the admin (to make a download possible more than once).

client. In addition, variables in the Tcl namespace may be set and
retrieved directly, say by an AJAX script.

About: Ksplice is practical technology for updating the Linux kernel
without rebooting. It enables you to avoid the disruptive process of
rebooting for kernel security updates and bugfixes. By making it easy to
keep your systems up to date, Ksplice helps you avoid the security and
stability risks of running out-of-date software.
Changes: This release adds support for building updates from Git commits
in ksplice-create. It prevents reversing Ksplice updates that have been
partially cold-applied.

[036] - Pantheios 1.0.1 beta 175
by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Fri, Dec 19th 2008 18:50
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Logging
About: Pantheios is a C/C++ logging API library. It offers an optimal
combination of complete type-safety, very high efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (platform
and compiler independent), and it upholds the C tradition of only paying
for what you use. Pantheios supports logging of message statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogenous types. Pantheios supports
filtering of log messages based on severity level.
Changes: This release adds two new initialization codes, for resource
access denial (permissions and locking), and enhances the return codes from
be.file for file-open failure accordingly. The COM exception helper
function templates have been enhanced to enable working with custom
severity levels, which allows for user-customization of the application
layer. This release requires STLSoft 1.9.63.

basis, it is not a replacement for the shell.
Changes: This release includes a rewritten parser that eliminates ordering
issues that affected previous versions. The new parser also supports an
#include facility. A new flag, -g, allows the user to specify a group/gid
to run the command as, and the -l (list) option can now be used by root to
list other users' permissions. This release also adds support for

System :: Systems Administration
About: WebJob downloads a program over HTTP/HTTPS and executes it in one
unified operation. The output, if any, may be directed to stdout/stderr or
a WebJob server. WebJob may be useful in incident response and intrusion
analysis as it provides a mechanism to run known good diagnostic programs
on a potentially compromised system. WebJob also provides a framework that
is conducive to centralized management. Therefore, it can support and help
automate a large number of common administrative tasks and host-based
monitoring scenarios.
Changes: Generally, code was cleaned up and refined as necessary. Several
bugs have been fixed. Externally, there have been several changes: embedded
Perl support has been added; the client now includes failover/fallback
