[001] - AIS Parser SDK 1.9
by Brian C. Lane (http://freshmeat.net/users/nexuscompu/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 00:39
Software Development :: Libraries
About: AIS Parser SDK is a library of functions allowing you to add
support for Automatic Identification receivers (AIS) to your project. It
parses ship positions, names, destinations, etc. from standard AIVDM
messages. It includes C source and documentation.
Changes: A beta release of Java package parsing messages 1-24. A Win32
python module built with Python 2.5.2. A get_timetag function to parse the
20-bit timestamp format used in ETA, Seaway, and IMO messages. A missing
break; in message 15 parsing has been fixed. portable.h now checks for
Cygwin. A missing wave_dir field in IMO message 1.11 has been added. A
bin2sixbit 1-off error has been fixed. The example documentation has been
improved (loop when adding packets).

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. The supported protocols
are HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink. It has a powerful segmented
downloading ability, downloading a file from multiple sources and multiple
protocols and utilizing your download bandwidth to the maximum. It supports
downloading a file from HTTP(S)/FTP and BitTorrent at the same time, while
the data downloaded from HTTP(S)/FTP is uploaded to the BitTorrent swarm.
Using Metalink's chunk checksums, aria2 automatically validates chunks of
data while downloading a file like BitTorrent.
Changes: This release fixes a bug where BitTorrent download didn't finish
when a REJECT message was received before a CHOKE message. The --use-head
option was added to toggle whether the HEAD method should be used in the
first HTTP request. To use GET method as the first request, give
--use-head=false to aria2c.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, configurable result ranking, highlighted search
results (like Google), and categorized result counts (like Amazon).
Scaffolding supports tag cloud, AJAX search suggest, and a spell checker.
It can easily integrate with other languages with XML/JSON/HTML. There is a
UI for all operations, so no Java coding is necessary. Deleted or updated
records in database can be synchronized. Content outside the database can
also be searched.
Changes: This release adds an option to schedule deletion detection for
incremental indexing. It adds a customizable fetcher for data sources other
than databases. It adds job scheduling for the spell check dictionary. It
fixes a possible format error for the period table. It fixes problems
handling negative queries like "night -title:sky".

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: Deliantra is an advancement of the crossfire multi-user RPG game.
Unlike the original project, it focuses mainly on stability and
playability, but also adds modern technology such as map scripting, Perl
server extensions, asynchronous I/O, higher resolution graphics, and better
client support.
Changes: The line of sight algorithm has been replaced completely, by a
better performing and more correctly working one. The light/darkness logic
was rewritten completely. Permanent invisibility will not make the monsters
completely passive anymore, as the players now generate noise on attack,
which will attract the monsters. The monster AI was improved a bit by
implementing a primitive "smell system", which the monsters use to track
players. Old code, unused code and legacy support for gcfclient were
removed.

Communications
Internet
Security
About: eurephia is an authentication plug-in for OpenVPN. It enhances the
OpenVPN authentication process by using user name and password
authentication in addition to SSL certificates. If too many failed attempts
are registered, the user account and/or IP address will be blocked. For
Linux servers, iptables support is also included, which can be used to
restrict each user's network access through the VPN channel. For the
moment, eurephia depends on a patched OpenVPN server to provide a secure
user name and certificate mapping.
Changes: This release adds a new CLI-based admin utility for user account
and certificate administration. The code has been reorganized and some
bugfixes have been made (memory leaks, incorrect behavior, and segfaults).

[016] - FastFormat 0.2.1 (beta 6)
by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 21:23
Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Localization
About: FastFormat is a C/C++ output and formatting library whose design
parameters are complete type-safety, efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (to any
platform or compiler), and it upholds the C tradition of you only pay for
what you use. FastFormat supports output and formatting of statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogeneous types. FastFormat writes
to output "sinks", which can be of arbitrary type.
Changes: Loki.SafeFormat was added to the comparison formatting libraries
against which performance tests are carried out; the results are just as
positive for FastFormat as with the others. The performance tests now
output in spreadsheet-ready form. The application layer components were
enhanced for use with older compilers that do not support the filter_type
mechanism. The no-namespace compatibility was enhanced for older compilers
that have some trouble with ADL. Examples for "void pointers" and "no
namespace" were added to the makefiles. This release depends on STLSoft
1.9.64.

any other toolkit that a module is written for.
Changes: Crashes in the IDE property sheet, in the debugger, and in form
save were fixed. Automatic completion now works correctly on lines having
non-ASCII characters. Dir() and RDir() now work correctly on relative
paths. SUPER now works inside overridden static methods. String and BLOB
quoting in the PostgreSQL component are fixed. Sockets will not take 100%
CPU anymore. Startup forms hidden at design time are not shown
automatically anymore. The XSLT component works again. Many bugs were fixed
in the GTK+ component.

About: GIMP SCRIPT-FUs for 2.6 is a collection of SCRIPT-FUs edited to
work in GIMP-2.6.x. The compiler of this collection is usually not the
original author for most of the scripts, but was able to tweak or get them
working better in GIMP 2.6 and consolidate them in a sane menu hierarchy.
Changes: A "Flatten Image when complete" option was added to the dialog

by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 18:45
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries
About: GNU ccScript offers a class extensible threaded embedded scripting
engine for use with the Common C++ GNU package. This engine is also used in
Bayonne (the GNU telephony server), and in TOSI (FreeBSD and GNU/Linux PBX
integration servers). This engine differs from traditional scripting
systems in that it is used to script near real-time state-event systems
through deterministic callback step execution rather than the linear and
non-deterministic fashion of embedded script libraries such as tcl, and
libguile.
Changes: This release introduces support for conditional compiling of
scripts based on bound keywords. It introduces the %index symbol to access
indexing within for/foreach loops, and new loop index manipulation
functions including "previous" to skip backward in a loop. foreach now
supports an optional starting offset. Support has been added for numeric

by marubinotto (http://freshmeat.net/users/marubinotto/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 08:43
Documentation
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
About: Piggydb is an easy-to-use Web application for building a personal
knowledge repository. The knowledge in the repository is composed of
knowledge fragments which you input in a manner similar to blogging. You
can also input any file as a knowledge fragment. Piggydb enables you to
create highly structural knowledge by providing features such as flexible
relationships between knowledge fragments and hierarchical tagging. It
encourages you to organize your knowledge continuously to discover new
ideas or concepts, and moreover enrich your creativity.
Changes: This is a major update with two important features, which are
File Fragment and Fragment Embedding. File Fragment enables you to input
any file as a knowledge fragment, so you can manage your files as well as
text fragments by creating relations between them and tagging them.
Fragment Embedding enables you to embed the content of a fragment in
another fragment. The embedding can be nested as deep as needed, so you can
create more complex, rich fragments with it.

by Andrew Ferguson (http://freshmeat.net/users/adferguson/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 18:49
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
Utilities
About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in a special directory so you can still recover files lost some
time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an
incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth- efficient
manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to
securely back up to a remote location, and only the differences will be
transmitted. It can also handle symlinks, device files, permissions,
ownership, etc., so it can be used on the entire file system.
Changes: A substantial number of small bugfixes are included in this
release, particularly to improve the support for extended attributes on
symlinks introduced in 1.2.2. Many fixes were included to print more
informative error messages and reduce the number of Python stack traces
printed for common mistakes. Support for Python 2.2 and 2.6 was fixed. The
official Windows build now supports files greater than 4gb in size, and
properly ignores NTFS reparse points.

other IPsec-based VPN products. The focus of the strongSwan project is on
strong authentication mechanisms using X.509 public key certificates and
optional secure storage of private keys on smartcards through a
standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique feature is the use of X.509
attribute certificates to implement advanced access control schemes based
on group memberships.
Changes: Major performance improvements were made by introducing hash
table lookups, allowing the setup of thousands of IKEv2 connections in
seconds. Smartcard support for IKEv2 connections was added using the
OpenSSL Engine API.

[059] - Tcl/Tk 8.6b1 (Development)
by Andres Garcia (http://freshmeat.net/users/andresgarci/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 12:38
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Testing
About: Tcl provides a portable scripting environment for Unix, Windows,
and Macintosh that supports string processing and pattern matching, native
file system access, shell-like control over other programs, TCP/IP
networking, timers, and event-driven I/O. Tcl has traditional programming
constructs like variables, loops, procedures, namespaces, error handling,
script packages, and dynamic loading of DLLs. Tk provides portable GUIs on
UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh. A powerful widget set and the concise
scripting interface to Tk make it a breeze to develop sophisticated user
interfaces.
Changes: The new commands [try], [throw], [zlib], and [ttk::spinbox] were
added. The new subcommads [file tempfile], [tk busy], [tk fontchooser],
[$canvas imove], and [$canvas rchars] were added. A new ttk theme was
added: vista uses the new "hover" state. The build script now supports
bundled packages.

[060] - Tin Hat 20081229
by Anthony G. Basile (http://freshmeat.net/users/blueness/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 22:21
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Security
Security :: Cryptography
About: Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo. It
aims to provide a very secure, stable, and fast desktop environment that
lives purely in RAM. Tin Hat boots from CD, or optionally USB pen drive,
but it is not a LiveCD in that it does not mount any file system from the
boot device. Rather, Tin Hat employs a massive squashfs image which expands
into tmpfs upon booting. This makes for long boot times, but remarkable
speeds during human-computer interaction.
Changes: The boot process was cleaned up: initrd was replaced with
intramfs, busybox was downgraded to 1.7.4 and statically compiled against
uClibc, mdev is used to populate /dev rather than MAKEDEV, and init was
improved to better locate the squashfs filesystem. The build scripts were
cleaned up so that "building a new release" and "saving a running system to
ISO" are the same process. Tin Hat is no longer built from VMware
templates, but from a running system purely in RAM. The iso2usb.sh scripts
were stabilized: booting from pen drive now uses syslinux rather than GRUB.

[064] - WP Clipart 7.1
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 08:33
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Text Processing :: General
About: WP Clipart is an attempt to make a useful clip art package of
public domain images for use in word processors. It includes an optional
cross-platform viewer/editor written with Python/GTK. The collection
contains primarily non-transparent PNG images, mid-tones expanded and large
shadow areas minimized (to prevent blocking-up) for inkjet print quality.
It is suitable for documents as well as Web graphics, but also has business
application. Its primary focus is for educational use (pictures of all US
presidents, all country flags alphabetically listed, all US states,
historical figures, a sign language alphabet, and a large American history
section.)
Changes: Wpclipper.py was updated to allow horizontal resizing to make
viewing long title names easier. A bit of code cleanup was done. The
updated install package was re-released and the runBrowser command (for the
homepage link) was accommodated on Absolute Linux. As always, the
stand-alone Python script for the viewer/editor is available online in the
wpclipart.com/viewer directory. (No Glade or other support modules are
used.)

[065] - xTests 0.9.3
by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
Mon, Dec 29th 2008 21:33
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
About: xTests is a small, simple, lightweight, portable unit/component
testing library for exercising C and C++ libraries. It relies on no
platform-specific or compiler-specific constructs and doesn't require
pre-processing of your source code by scripting languages or use macros to
create secret classes that use Schwarz counters to register test cases. It
relies on you to simply code what you want, and nothing that you don't
want.
Changes: Tests for enumeration, XTESTS_TEST_ENUM_TRUE() and
XTESTS_TEST_ENUM_FALSE(), were added.
