Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Multimedia :: Video
About: Advene (Annotate Digital Video, Exchange on the NEt) is aimed at
providing a model and a format to share annotations about digital video
documents (movies, courses, conferences, etc.), as well as tools to edit
and visualize the hypervideos generated from both the annotations and the
audiovisual documents. Teachers, moviegoers, etc. can use them to exchange
multimedia comments and analyses about video documents. The project also
aims at studying the way that communities of users (teachers, moviegoers,
students, etc.) will use these self-publishing tools to share their
audiovisual "readings", and to envision new editing and viewing interfaces
for interactive comment and analysis of audiovisual content.
Changes: This version integrates the shotdetect application, and can
display an activity trace to provide a feedback about the current activity.
A new Edition history view displays the elements that were most recently
edited or created. Static views can be exported as static HTML files, so
that video analyses can be uploaded to a Web site. The Mac OS X version now
uses the gstreamer video player, which offers frame-by-frame navigation. A
summarized change list can be found in the changelog:

About: Fotoxx is a program for improving digital photos. Navigate large
image collections using a pageable window of thumbnails. Create HDR (high
dynamic range) images by combining bright and dark images to improve detail
in both bright and dark areas. Create panoramas by joining overlapped
images. Adjust brightness and color intensity independently for different
underlying brightness levels. Rotate an image (level a tilted image or turn
90 degrees). Remove red eyes from electronic flash photos. Sharpen, resize,
crop, reduce noise, and change color depth. Warp an image by dragging the
mouse. Edit tags/keywords and search images by date or tags.
Changes: Visual feedback for brightness/contrast/color edits was made
faster. Erratic mouse drag in the warp function was fixed. Color balance
was separated from brightness/whiteness adjustments. A problem where the
last translation in a .po file sometimes had a comment appended was fixed.
Sharpen, blur, and noise reduction, when applied within an image area, can
now blend the boundaries. A modified "top hat" noise reduction method was
added, which is more effective for some types of noise.

Changes: This version supports Java 5 and greater only. Where appropriate,
existing API calls have been updated to use Java generics. The OptionSpec
interface was extracted and surfaced. OptionSpecs returned by the fluent
interface methods are used to retrieve arguments of the options they

About: Lbzip2 is a Pthreads-based parallel bzip2/bunzip2 filter, passable
to GNU tar with the --use-compress-program option. It isn't restricted to
regular files on input, nor output. Successful splitting for decompression
isn't guaranteed, just very likely (failure is detected). Splitting in both
modes and compression itself occur with an approximate 900k block size. On
an Athlon-64 X2 6000+, lbzip2 was 92% faster than standard bzip2 when
compressing, and 45% faster when decompressing (based on wall clock time).
Lbzip2 strives to be portable by requiring UNIX 98 APIs only, besides an

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Boot
About: The Mandos system allows computers to have encrypted root file
systems and at the same time be capable of remote or unattended reboots.
The computers run a small client program in the initial RAM disk
environment which will communicate with a server over a network. All
network communication is encrypted using TLS. The clients are identified by
the server using an OpenPGP key that is unique to each client. The server
sends the clients an encrypted password. The encrypted password is
decrypted by the clients using the same OpenPGP key, and the password is
then used to unlock the root file system.
Changes: The server now tries to change to user and group "_mandos" before
falling back to trying the old values "mandos", "nobody:nogroup", and
"65534". Server startup no longer aborts even if no clients are defined in
clients.conf. Plugins named "*.dpkg-bak" are now ignored by the client. A
compilation failure on some architectures where the C compiler does not
recognize the "-z" option as a linker option was hopefully fixed.
