[003] - Automated Testing Framework 0.6
by Julio M. Merino Vidal (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmmv/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 20:51
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing
About: ATF is a collection of libraries and utilities designed to ease
unattended application testing in the hands of developers and end users of
a specific piece of software. Tests can currently be written in C/C++ or
POSIX shell and, contrary to other testing frameworks, ATF tests are
installed into the system alongside any other application files. This
allows the end user to easily verify that the software behaves correctly on
her system. Furthermore, the results of the test suites can be collected
into nicely-formatted reports to simplify their visualization and analysis.
Changes: The atf-check tool has been added, which executes a given command
and checks its exit code and output against pre-specified values. This is
mostly used internally by the shell interface. A new set of macros,
ATF_REQUIRE_*, has been added to the C interface to signal fatal errors,
while the old ones (ATF_CHECK_*) now only signal non-fatal errors. There
are several other internal changes to make test case timeout control more
robust, and multiple optimizations all around the code (especially in the
shell code).

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random, Least
Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a
customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to set
up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports SNMP,
integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It implements a very fast
in-memory IP-to-location database, allowing powerful location-based server
load-balancing.
Changes: The LDNS library has been upgraded to release 1.4.1. The
integrated IP to country database (ip-to-country.csv) has been upgraded to
the latest release. An RPM package for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SLES10
SP2 and above is now available for the first time.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Games/Entertainment
About: Brain Workshop is an implementation of the Dual N-Back mental
exercise. This exercise is a mental activity that has been scientifically
shown to improve your working memory (short-term memory) and fluid
intelligence. The game involves remembering a sequence of spoken letters
and a sequence of positions of a square at the same time. Brain Workshop
includes additional challenging game modes beyond Dual N-Back.
Changes: This release fixes a few bugs and adds some new configuration
options. Novice Mode was renamed to Jaeggi Mode. The data and res
directories can now be specified on the command line using the --datadir
and --resdir parameters.

About: CCMA is a simple, lightweight change request control manager. When
done consistently and accurately, change requests make a invaluable tool.
It's the aim of this project to make change request management easy and as
useful as possible.
Changes: A file download corruption problem was fixed. Various superficial
GUI issues were fixed. Missing or inconsistent links were fixed within the
asset menus for the admin login. Email notification a to user on new
account creation was added. The "new change request form" was modified to
have the local timezone as the initial default rather than just
alphabetical. The root user requirement for the installer was emphasized
with red text. The fact that the installer will attempt to install modules
via "CPAN" was emphasized to avoid confusion. An upgrade option was added
to the installer.

[009] - deco file extraction framework 1.6
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 15:08
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a command-line program that, together with the deco-archive
package, allows you to extract dozens of popular archive file formats. It
has a consistent interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.rar 3.zip 4.flac 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions.
Changes: The -k option has been removed, and its behavior is now the
default, which should lead to a nicer work flow. Use the new -c ("clean")
option to get the previous default of aborting extraction on error and
deleting partial contents.

by Priit Järv (http://freshmeat.net/users/tiirp/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 16:31
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: ImgMod3 is a simple image cropping, scaling, and modification tool.
It is built with a single purpose: to be able to handle a large number of
files quickly, while retaining manual control. It uses PIL for the image
processing operations and wxPython as the user interface toolkit. By
cramming its basic feature set in a single window and automating repetitive
actions, ImgMod3 aims to be easier to use than a full featured graphics
program. Key features are automatic scaling to target size and full access
to functionality through keyboard shortcuts, minimizing the need for the
mouse.
Changes: Support for saving files in PNG format was added. Optional
non-linear controls were added to extend the available range of several
image processing operations. Windows IPC functionality was improved to
remove arbitrary limits from the number of files that can be passed to the
program.

[018] - Lbzip2 0.10
by lacos (http://freshmeat.net/users/lacos/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 21:06
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: Lbzip2 is a Pthreads-based parallel bzip2/bunzip2 filter, passable
to GNU tar with the --use-compress-program option. It isn't restricted to
regular files on input, nor output. Successful splitting for decompression
isn't guaranteed, just very likely (failure is detected). Splitting in both
modes and compression itself occur with an approximate 900k block size. On
an Athlon-64 X2 6000+, lbzip2 was 92% faster than standard bzip2 when
compressing, and 45% faster when decompressing (based on wall clock time).
Lbzip2 strives to be portable by requiring UNIX 98 APIs only, besides an
unmodified libbz2.
Changes: Testing on a 128-core HP SuperDome showed a known bottleneck in
the multiple-workers decompressor to be significant on many-core machines:
whenever there were fewer input blocks than cores, the work was distributed
unevenly. Hence, the splitter-to-workers queue of "scan and decompress"
tasks was replaced with two queues: a low priority, splitter-to-workers one
of "scan" tasks, and a high priority, workers-to-workers one of
"decompress" tasks. Alas, this also increased the number of context
switches. The new worker broadcast conditions were formally proven in the
comments.

[019] - Lilith Logback event viewer 0.9.34
by huxhorn (http://freshmeat.net/users/huxhorn/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 21:01
About: Lilith is a logging and access event viewer for the Logback logging
framework. It has features comparable to Chainsaw, a logging event viewer
for log4j. This means that it can receive logging events from remote
applications using Logback as their logging backend. It uses files to
buffer the received events locally, so it is possible to keep vast amounts
of logging events at your fingertip while still being able to check only
the ones you are really interested in by using filtering conditions.

[031] - pppd-sql 0.6.0
by Maik Broemme (http://freshmeat.net/users/babyface/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 21:04
Communications
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
About: pppd-sql is a plugin for the Point-to-Point server (pppd) on Linux
and Solaris that adds an authentication backend using a MySQL or PostgreSQL
database for the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) and
Password Authentication Protocol (PAP). It supports MS-CHAPv1 and MS-CHAPv2
too. The IPCP negotiation after authentication handshake is also supported.
pppd-sql supports a flexible configuration scheme, has built-in failover
functionality (no load-balancing), and comes with easy and handy
documentation.
Changes: This version includes support for concurrent connection handling
of single users across multiple tunnel servers. Six new configuration
options were added 'mysql-port', 'mysql-column-update', 'mysql-exclusive',
'pgsql-port', 'pgsql-column-update', and 'pgsql-exclusive'. The built-in
failover functionality was removed (it is impossible with the concurrent
connection handler, and should be made with separate database utilities).

[033] - Seed7 2009-01-18
by Thomas Mertes (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomas_mertes/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 21:05
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements and
operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.
Changes: The savehd7.sd7 example program, which can be used to save a
potentially damaged hard disk partition to an image file, was improved. A
FAQ about compiling the Seed7 interpreter was added. The function
bigFileSize was added to bigfile.s7i. The functions file_size and file_type
were renamed to fileSize and fileType in seed7_05.s7i. The driver functions
cmdBigFileSize, cmdChdir, cmdFileType cmdFileSize, and cmdMkdir were
improved to use wide char (UTF-16) functions under Windows and normal
(UTF-8) functions under Unix/Linux/BSD. In big_rtl.c, the functions
bigFromUInt32 and bigFromUInt64 were fixed.

[034] - tcp_banner 1.0.0
by Wolf (http://freshmeat.net/users/offswn/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 21:01
Utilities
About: Tcp Banner allows you to place a banner message on a given port
(and IP). This is useful if you have moved an application to another port
or IP address. The inbound connection gets presented with the message you
define and then gets disconnected. This makes use of the socklib library.

Text Editors
Text Processing
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
About: TEA is a powerful and easy-to-use Qt4-based editor with many useful
features for HTML, Docbook, and LaTeX editing. It features a small
footprint, a tabbed layout engine, support for multiple encodings, code
snippets, templates, customizable hotkeys, an "open at cursor" function for
HTML files and images, miscellaneous HTML tools, preview in external
browser, string manipulation functions, Morse-code tools, bookmarks, syntax
highlighting, and more.
Changes: Almost all user menus such as Snippets, Scripts, Templates, and
Session now can hold subdirectories. This means that TEA has the ability to
show the subfolders as submenus. The search options are now saved. The
image viewer hides itself when the file manager loses focus. The Famous
input field has autocompletion.

[036] - tmux 0.6
by Nicholas Marriott (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicm/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 08:21
Terminals
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: tmux is a "terminal multiplexer". It allows a number of terminals
(or windows) to be accessed and controlled from a single terminal. It is
intended to be a simple, modern, BSD-licensed alternative to programs such
as GNU screen.
Changes: Substitutions in status-left/right can show, for example, the
session name. Interactive window and session choice screens were added.
Vertical window splitting was added. Server locking and automatic locking
on inactivity are possible. A command-prompt command option was added to
accept an argument used to construct the command, and an interactive window
rename using this was added. Save-buffer and source-file commands were
added. Global window options and a flag to unset an option were added.
Completion and command history in command prompt were improved.

[037] - Tokyo Cabinet 1.4.0
by Mikio Hirabayashi (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikio/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 14:55
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Tokyo Cabinet is a library of routines for managing a database. It
is the successor of QDBM. Tokyo Cabinet runs very fast. For example, the
time required to store 1 million records is 1.5 seconds for a hash database
and 2.2 seconds for a B+ tree database. Moreover, the database size is very
small. For example, the overhead for a record is 16 bytes for a hash
database, and 5 bytes for a B+ tree database. Furthermore, the scalability
of Tokyo Cabinet is great. The database size can be up to 8EB.
Changes: The table database API was added. It manages a database of
records of named columns. Functions with sub-indexes are also provided and
they improve performance of complex queries.

[039] - Weblog 2.0
by Henry (http://freshmeat.net/users/Henry8/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 09:17
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: Weblog is a blog publisher. It takes structured text files as input
and outputs static HTML and RSS files. It aims to be simple and robust.
Changes: weblog.ini has been replaced by config.py, which is a Python
script. URLs have changed. Spaces have been replaced with underscores. You
can also choose the encoding for filenames, resulting in nicer URLs for
languages which use non-ASCII characters. Graphical customization is now
done by directly modifying the templates. Weblog has a nicer default look.
"html_head", "html_header", and "html_footer" are no longer supported.
Bugfixes and documentation enhancements were also made.

[040] - Zero Install Injector 0.38
by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)
Sun, Jan 18th 2009 14:51
Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution
About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.
Changes: When unpacking lzma-compressed archives, the unpacker is now
fetched through Zero Install if necessary. A new "audit" command allows the
integrity of all cached software to be checked at once. If running software
using sudo, 0launch no longer leaves root-owned files in the user's home
directory. Various bugs were fixed.
