  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 14:28

Security

About: This Webmin module allows for Afick remote administration (in a
simple Web browser). It allows administrators to consult history and
archive logs, change the Afick configuration, and run Afick.

Changes: This release implements the new options from the afick 2.13
release: the only_suffix directive and the stat_ext command.

Security
Security :: Forensics
System :: Logging

About: AirSAM is a desktop GUI that compliments the Web based Snort Alert
Monitor. AirSAM gives up to date insight into who might be attacking your
network. The ultimate goal is to give audio/visual cues right at the time
of the attack. AirSAM is an Adobe Air application and should run on Mac OS,
Linux, and Windows.

Changes: The dock icon now changes on OS X depending on the threat level.
This allows for a quick visual indication of the current threat level.

[004] - Another File Integrity Checker 2.13-1
  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 14:27

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added, changed,
or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of aide or
tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: A new configuration directive (only_suffix) was added to improve
the scan's speed on operating systems like Windows. A new analysis command
(test_ext) was added to display statistics on suffix extensions. The code
can now detect if a file's modification date is in the future.

[005] - Arg_parser 1.2 (Stable)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 14:17

Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: Arg_parser is an argument parser that follows POSIX and GNU
conventions for command line arguments. It is implemented as a C++ class,
and is simpler, easier to use, and safer than "getopt_long". Arg_parser
does not modify its arguments, nor uses any global variables. So you may
create more than one parser in your program if you need or want to.
Arg_parser can also parse options from configuration files. A C language
version is also available.

Changes: A compilation problem producing bad code for the C language
version with GCC 4.2 has been fixed. "make install-info" should now work on
Debian and Mac OS X.

[006] - Asymptote 1.59
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 07:14

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: A missing filltype option for projected 2D arrowheads was added.
The scaling of plain TeX fonts was fixed. Examples that mix 3D exporting
and viewing now work properly. With the -nothreads option, the main process
now waits for 3D exports to finish before proceeding. Conflicts in slide
presentations were fixed; the asy(string) function assigns defaultfilename
correctly. A bug in processing command-line options was fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: AutoEmbed is a PHP class that generates HTML embed tags for audio
and video located on a given URL. It also provides the means to optionally
 manipulate the retrieved media information by setting parameters, and
finally return a reconstructed HTML snippet for presenting Flash media on
a Web site.

Changes: This release adds the ability to fetch a video's ID by parsing
the site's HTML for sites where the ID isn't obtainable through the URL
itself. This adds support for Hulu, CBS News, CNet TV, MSNBC, EbaumsWorld,
Break, TrailerAddict, Atom TV, Imeem, Glumbert, BoFunk, Flickr Video, and
iReport.

  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 15:13

Communications
Internet
System :: Networking

About: CloudVPN is a VPN that allows mesh networking. It can create
secured networks with special or weird topologies. All nodes of the network
are equal and can connect in any way, so it's very easy to create
connection schemes with (for example) clustered servers, decentralized
servers, complete topologies for better throughput, ring topologies for
failover, long-line for passing through many routes, or tree topology for
optimizing inter-server bandwidth needs. It is very easy to get working.

Changes: The OpenBSD port now works. Bandwidth limiting of inner traffic
was added, so users can now tune total, per-connection, and burst rates for
both incoming and outgoing traffic. Some minor problems and bugs were
fixed.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, configurable result ranking, highlighted search
results (like Google), and categorized result counts (like Amazon).
Scaffolding supports tag cloud, AJAX search suggest, and a spell checker.
It can easily integrate with other languages with XML/JSON/HTML. There is a
UI for all operations, so no Java coding is necessary. Deleted or updated
records in database can be synchronized. Content outside the database can
also be searched.

Changes: Numeric range search with inclusive/exclusive on both ends is
added. Deletion SQL choice with incremental indexing is made clearer.
Multiple schedules can be added/changed/deleted. The Lucene library is
updated to the latest release. Buffer Index can selectively update a
specific index field. Buffer index cache flushing is resolved. Configurable
email notification for indexing processes is added. AJAX Search Suggestions
partial scaffolding is added. HA Cluster mode support subscribing
incremental index changes and a spell-check index. Tag cloud generation via

[017] - Expect-lite 3.5.0
  by Craig Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvmiller/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 14:59

Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Expect-lite is a wrapper for expect, created to make expect
programming even easier. The wrapper permits the creation of expect script
command files by using special character(s) at the beginning of each line
to indicate the expect-lite action. Basic expect-lite scripts can be
created by simply cutting and pasting text from a terminal window into a
script, and adding '>' '

Changes: Key features include instant interaction for immediate debugging,
almost unlimited multiple sessions, and better control over logging
information. Pressing ^\ (control+backslash) will drop into interactive
mode, which turns control of the keyboard over to the user, typing directly
to the process on the remote host.

[018] - FastFormat 0.3.1 (alpha 1)
  by Dr Proctor (http://freshmeat.net/users/DrProctor/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 15:01

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Localization

About: FastFormat is a C/C++ output and formatting library whose design
parameters are complete type-safety, efficiency, genericity, and
extensibility. It is simple to use and extend, highly portable (to any
platform or compiler), and it upholds the C tradition of you only pay for
what you use. FastFormat supports output and formatting of statements of
arbitrary complexity, consisting of heterogeneous types. FastFormat writes
to output "sinks", which can be of arbitrary type.

Changes: The main change with the 0.3 release is the addition of support
for {index,min-width,max-width,alignment} syntax for replacement
parameters. Also, support was added to allow shim_strings to be used as
sinks, facilitating highly efficient layering of formatting. A degree of
refactoring has been done, including the wholesale renaming and moving of
names into nested namespaces, and preparation for full localisation via
renaming of stock (non-localized) conversion components. Some of these
changes may require rewriting of any customizations using 0.2 code.

  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 15:17

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Filesystems
System :: Recovery Tools

About: fsarchiver is a system tool that allows you to save the contents of
a filesystem to a compressed archive file. The filesystem can be restored
on a partition that has a different size, and it can be restored on a
different filesystem. Unlike tar/dar, fsarchiver also creates the
filesystem when it extracts the data to partitions. Everything is
checksummed in the archive in order to protect the data. If the archive is
corrupt, you just lose the current file, not the whole archive.

Changes: Major bugs were fixed, such as deadlocks in the queue and
corruption of a checksum during savefs, which makes the restoration of the
archive impossible. Management of the error and normal messages was
improved. Support was added for the btrfs filesystem attributes, since its
format should not change in the future.

  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 18:44

Database :: API
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Scientific/Engineering

About: GetData is a library that provides an API to interface with dirfile
databases. The dirfile database format is designed to provide a fast,
scalable format for storing and reading binary, synchronously-sampled,
time-ordered data. GetData was originally written for the BOOMERanG and
BLAST experiments as a data format suitable for use for both quick-look and
data reduction. It is now used by many other cosmological and astrophysical
experiments including ACT, Planck, Spider, SPUD, as well as other projects.

Changes: This release is expected to be API-complete (i.e. although
functionality may still be missing, no further additions to the list of
public function provided by GetData are expected). In addition to various
bugfixes, changes include the ability to delete fields, modify field
metadata, change the frameoffset, encoding, byte ordering, or reference
field, move fields between format file fragments, and to remove fragments
from a dirfile. Read-only support for bzip2 and gzip compression has also
been implemented.

About: gitty-gitty, the (general | GNU) template generation tools, are a
set of scripts for creating a whole set of sources which may already be
compiled and installed using the GNU development tools. Think of gtgt as a
program which is able to create an already compilable, very sophisticated
"hello world" program, written in C or C++ and constituted by a main
program, two internal modules (classes), and one static and one shared
library, and this complex "Hello World" is already fully embedded into the
GNU autoconf/automake development environment. By using gitty-gitty, you
will get a template of sources for the main cases you might meet, and which
you can also use as examples for automake, autoconf, etc.

About: HAL/C++ is a library using DBus-C++ to access the HAL daemon. The
library is not a wrapper around libhal and libhal-storage, but rather a
reimplementation using DBus-C++ to communicate with the HAL daemon, even
though it is modeled after the official libhal and libhal-storage, but does
not aim at complete adherance to the original API. The library is
application-oriented, so for now, features that would only be useful to
system-level applications or daemons, or HAL addons, are not being
implemented. However these features are mostly conveniences in the original
libhal, and can be emulated even with the existing API.

[038] - Mp3splt 0.5.4 (libmp3splt)
  by Alexandru Ionut Munteanu (http://freshmeat.net/users/ion_bidon/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 05:05

About: mp3splt is a command-line utility that splits MP3 and Ogg files at
specified times without decoding and re-encoding. It works with Mp3Wrap
and AlbumWrap files and has a silence detection split mode and a "cddb
source" mode. Libmp3splt is a library created from mp3splt. Mp3splt-gtk is
a GTK2 GUI that uses libmp3splt.

Changes: All tag/filename "Unicode" encoding issues on Windows are fixed.
The default behaviour of the tags on the split files has changed: by
default, this release sets the tags version of the file to split in the
split files (e.g. if the file for split has ID3 version X, the tags in the
split files will be ID3vX). The tags in the output files can be changed
with the SPLT_OPT_FORCE_TAGS_VERSION option. An issue where the input file
was erased if the output was the same as the original file is fixed. A
small track issue in tags is fixed.

Changes: This release adds the tags version option in Preferences->Split,
which determines whether to split using the version of the original file,
or to force ID3v2 or ID3v1 output. CUE and CDDB were not always setting the
correct number of digits for n in the GUI; this has been fixed. All

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities

About: PDFjam is a small collection of shell scripts that provide a
simple interface to some of the functionality of the pdfpages package for
pdfLaTeX. At present, the utilities available are pdfnup, pdfjoin, and
pdf90. PDFjam depends on a working installation of (pdf)LaTeX. pdfnup puts
multiple document pages together on one physical page at a reduced size.
pdfjoin concatenates multiple PDF documents. pdf90 rotates the pages of PDF
documents. For Mac OS X, some example applications (droplets) are provided
for drag-and-drop access to the scripts.

Changes: This release fixes some important security problems. The scripts
now call for "/bin/bash" (rather than "/bin/sh") as the interpreter.
Availability of "mktemp -d" is also now assumed. The sample Mac OS X
droplets now look for "pdflatex" at (by default) "/usr/texbin/pdflatex",
but this is still configurable.

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog

[058] - Tin Hat 20090119
  by Anthony G. Basile (http://freshmeat.net/users/blueness/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 18:43

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo. It
aims to provide a very secure, stable, and fast desktop environment that
lives purely in RAM. Tin Hat boots from CD, or optionally USB pen drive,
but it is not a LiveCD in that it does not mount any file system from the
boot device. Rather, Tin Hat employs a massive squashfs image which expands
into tmpfs upon booting. This makes for long boot times, but remarkable
speeds during human-computer interaction.

Changes: This release addresses several security issues and bugfixes, and
syncs upstream with stable hardened Gentoo. Over 30 packages are upgraded,
including the following important updates: hardened-sources-2.6.25-r12,
bind-tools-9.4.3_p1, openssl-0.9.8j, e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1, and
portage-2.1.6.4

About: The CentralNic Unicode Library (Unicode.php) provides some PHP
classes for manipulating Unicode data. These classes are general purpose,
but are intended for use when working with Internationalised Domain Names
(IDNs).

Changes: This release fixes a bug in the toLower() method of
Unicode_Character which would return a NULL value if no lower-case
character could be found.

requiring libgee. Log.FILE and Log.LINE provide a replacement for __FILE__
and __LINE__ as found in C. Lua, MySQL, and POSIX bindings have been added.

[063] - Word War vi 0.25
  by Stephen Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/StephenCameron/)
  Mon, Jan 19th 2009 15:14

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Word War vi is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up '80s style arcade
game. You pilot your "vi"per craft through core memory, rescuing lost .swp
files, avoiding OS defenses, and wiping out those memory hogging emacs
processes. When all the lost .swp files are rescued, head for the socket
which will take you to the next node in the cluster.

Changes: New enemies, Tesla towers and Gunwheels, were added to later
levels. The difficulty of levels was tweaked to try to make the increase in
difficulty ramp up more smoothly and gradually. Cosmetic improvements were
made to the appearance and motion of the Space Octopi. The duration of Xbox
360 controller rumble effects was shortened to 1/4th of a second to make
the effects correlate more sharply with the events which cause them.

About: X# (pronounced X-sharp) is an XML-oriented programming language
designed to quickly create Web applications and services. Everything is
represented as an XML tree, and instead of using functions to manipulate
information or perform actions, all possible operations are done by adding,
removing, or changing nodes from this tree. Since there are no functions to
learn and everything is done intuitively, even inexperienced developers can
create complex Web applications and services quickly.
