As undoubtedly many of you have noticed, things have been fairly quiet on
the site development front here at freshmeat.net. During the past several
months, we've rethought some of the core concepts behind the site and
developed a new platform to operate upon. However, I'd like to seek active
participation of our loyal community in ironing out bugs, soliciting
feedback about design decisions we made, and ask for general suggestions
and improvements before we make the big switch in a little while. But let
me put some of my ideas and motivation behind this new version out in the
open first.

timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.

About: gumnut is a program to find the most supported proposals within
large groups of people. The text or GUI client can create, moderate, and
display proposals over a decentralized communication network (currently
Gnutella). Proposals are text files with a simple naming convention that
uses the filename to describe field attributes (such as topic and
geographical location). Popular proposals are found by searching on one or
more of these fields and then calculating the support for each proposal
based on the number of occurrences on the network.

/dev/null to avoid clogging the text user interface.

[029] - Manent 0.10.20
  by Sasha (http://freshmeat.net/users/gsasha/)
  Wed, Jan 21st 2009 23:13

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Manent is an algorithmically strong backup and archival program. It
features efficient backup to anything that looks like storage. Currently it
supports plain filesystems ("directories"), FTP, and SFTP. Planned are
Amazon S3, optical disks, and email (SMTP and IMAP). It can work (making
progress towards finishing a backup) over a slow and unreliable network. It
can offer online access to the contents of the backup. Backed up storage is
completely encrypted. Backup is incremental, including changed parts of
large files. Moved, renamed, and duplicate files will not require
additional storage. Several computers can use the same storage for backup,
automatically sharing data. Both very large and very small files are
supported efficiently. Manent does not rely on timestamps of the remote
system to detect changes.

Changes: This release has fixes to make it work with Python 2.6.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Animation

About: Moonlight|3D is a modeling and animation tool for three-dimensional
art. It currently supports mesh-based modeling. It's a redesign of
Moonlight Atelier, formed after Moonlight Atelier/Creator died in
1999/2000. Rendering is done through pluggable backends. It currently
supports Sunflow, with support for RenderMan and others in planning.

Changes: A bug that stopped Moonlight|3D from working on non-English
locales has been fixed. Also, various other bugs related to input checking
and grouped objects have been fixed. 3D views can now be reset to the 4
standard perspectives: front, right, top, and perspective. The Delete OG
Node tool can now delete almost any node from the graph.

[031] - Not Sexy Graph State Calculator 0.1
  by Fastjack (http://freshmeat.net/users/adust/)
  Wed, Jan 21st 2009 23:11

About: NSGSC (Not Sexy Graph State Calculator) can calculate graph states
that represent multi-qubit in quantum computing. In quantum computing, a
graph state is a special type of multi-qubit state that can be represented
by a graph. Each qubit is represented by a vertex of the graph, and there
is an edge between every interacting pair of qubits. In particular, they
are a convenient way of representing certain types of entangled states.
Graph states are useful in quantum error correcting codes, entanglement
measurement and purification, and for characterization of computational
resources in measurement-based quantum computing models.

[043] - Snort 2.8.3.2
  by Randal Rioux (http://freshmeat.net/users/rrioux/)
  Wed, Jan 21st 2009 06:39

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Snort is a network intrusion detection and prevention system. It is
the most widely deployed technology of its kind in the world. It performs
detection using a variety of methods including rules-based detection,
anomaly detection, and heuristic analysis of network traffic. Its rules
language is open source and available to the public as well.

Changes: A problem was fixed with the target based/attribute table and
false positives for rules that don't have service metadata. The target
based/attribute table's compatability with older versions of bison was
fixed and it no longer exits when exceeding the configured limit on
attribute table reload. Stream5 was updated to better handle
out-of-sequence server responses that contain data when not doing
server-side reassembly. Configurable limits were added on the amount of
data queued for a single connection.

[050] - Zoom Profiler 1.3.0
  by RotateRight (http://freshmeat.net/users/rotateright/)
  Wed, Jan 21st 2009 20:03

Software Development
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
System :: Benchmark

About: Zoom is a low-overhead graphical and command line profiler for
Linux. A Zoom profile is system-wide, precise down to the instruction
level, and captures backtraces. This lets you see exactly what was running,
where time was spent, and how that code was called. Drill down into
critical code to get detailed performance data. Zoom analyzes and annotates
your code with specific tuning advice for many compilers and processors.
Share what you find with colleagues or archive it for later review. Zoom
saves profiles as a single, self-contained session file that can be emailed
or attached to bug reports. It also supports remote network profiling and
scripting.

Changes: This release adds support for external debug info files and
viewing of kernel/driver symbol code. Zoom now calculates symbol ranges for
code missing symbol information. Threads are shown with user-friendly names
based on root symbol names, and the display of symbol sizes has been added.
Hardware support has been added for Intel Atom and Core i7 processors.
Symbols from the vsyscall page (VDSO) are now shown. Fallback to OS timer
mode on unsupported hardware has been fixed. This release also includes
many other enhancements to code analysis, error reporting, stability, and
performance.
