Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: Animath is a Finite Element Method library entirely implemented in
C++. It is suited for fluid-structure interaction simulation, and it is
mathematically based on higher-order tetrahedral elements. It provides
front-ends to matrix solvers and mesh generators.
Changes: SUPG weighting for upwind stabilization is now supported, and a
corresponding solver can be found among the example applications. Another
great methodolical enhancement is the addition of matrix generators for
non-linear (including geometric non-linearity) structural analysis. Matrix
and load vector generation have been totally redesigned for this release,
the equation_c class and its descendants have been replaced with one class
for each type of matrix/load. Many bugs have also been addressed, such as
installation to global directories and outdated or incomplete
documentation.

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.
Changes: This version fixes an issue with IBM versions of Java that was
introduced in the previous release. A change of obfuscator clashed with a
bug in some releases of the JRE supplied with Websphere. There are fixes
for customers reading and writing PDFs to the same File. A memory leak in
the Viewer has been fixed. A number of other bugs have been fixed,
including a Swing screen corruption issue that sometimes occurred on
Windows.

About: depfinder finds the dependencies of Zenwalk/Slackware packages and
outputs them in a comma separated list, as used in Zenwalk. The dependency
list can be output to stdout or to a .dep text file. depfinder is very
fast; its speed is mainly due to the C++ code that is used in depfinder to
find in which package each individual library is included. depfinder only
uses ldd to look for dependencies, so it won't detect dependencies for any
kind of scripts, bash, Python, etc.

by Samuel Abels (http://freshmeat.net/users/knipknap/)
Fri, Jan 23rd 2009 18:51
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
About: Freech is a fast and mature discussion forum without useless bells
and whistles. Freech may be integrated into your own Web site or used
through an API. Freech uses a threaded layout to remove some of the
restrictions of flat forums. The development follows the design of the
popular newsticker, "Heise Online", while maintaining performance and
stability. UTF-8 is fully supported.
Changes: Multi-forum support and a completely new front page were added.
The design of the forum has been simplified and optimized for smaller
screen resolutions. All pages are now XHTML1.0 (strict) compliant.
Activities of moderators are logged on a dedicated page, and moderators may
now lock/unlock other users. Spam handling and detection were greatly
improved. The forum renders a lot faster by allowing the browser to cache
more pages. A large number of bugfixes are included.

Fri, Jan 23rd 2009 08:51
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Video
About: get_iplayer allows a user to download or stream any BBC iPlayer TV
program (H.264/Quicktime), ITVplayer TV programs (ASF/WMV), iPlayer radio
programs (MP3/RealAudio), and BBC podcasts (MP3/AAC). It even downloads
iPlayer subtitles. It supports RTMP iPlayer downloads. It has full PVR
functionality for automatic downloading.
Changes: Major recoding was done into OO Perl. --pid=<pid> now limits
download attempts to specified prog types unless the --pid=<type>:<pid>
form is used. A search term can contain a pid, but it must be in the form
of "pid:<pid>" and the correct prog type must be specified using --type.
The --listformat option was added to allow a user to specify the search
output text format. Cache file format is now read from the first line of
each cache file. Symlinking of a downloaded file was fixed when resuming
iplayer TV or radio. Unescaped data in --xml-channels output was fixed.

About: Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator with built-in
CAD and post-processing facilities. Its design goal is to provide a simple
meshing tool for academic problems with parametric input and advanced
visualization capabilities. It is built around four modules: geometry,
mesh, solver, and post-processing. The specification of any input to these
modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface
(based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII text files using Gmsh's own
scripting language.
Changes: This release introduces a major refactoring of the graphics and
GUI code, adds a new full-quad/hexa subdivision algorithm and automatic
adaptive visualization for high-order simplices, and improves the
visibility browser and the automatic transfinite corner selection.

Fri, Jan 23rd 2009 09:01
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Filesystems
About: HAL/C++ is a library using DBus-C++ to access the HAL daemon. The
library is not a wrapper around libhal and libhal-storage, but rather a
reimplementation using DBus-C++ to communicate with the HAL daemon, even
though it is modeled after the official libhal and libhal-storage, but does
not aim at complete adherance to the original API. The library is
application-oriented, so for now, features that would only be useful to
system-level applications or daemons, or HAL addons, are not being
implemented. However these features are mostly conveniences in the original
libhal, and can be emulated even with the existing API.
Changes: This release updates the API to changes in dbusmm incompatible to
dbus-c++. Minute API cleanups have also been done. The license has been
changed to the GNU LGPL v2.1.

Communications
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Security
About: iodine is a piece of software that lets you tunnel IPv4 data
through a DNS server. This can be useful in situations where Internet
access is firewalled, but DNS queries are allowed. It needs a TUN/TAP
device to operate. The bandwidth is asymmetrical with limited upstream and
up to 1 Mbit/s downstream.
Changes: iodine now does automatic probing of maximum accepted size on
downstream data, and the server will fragment using this value. This
enhanced throughput and ease of use because big packets like SSH login will
work even if relay only allows 512 bytes. iodined now also replies to NS
requests and can relay other queries to another DNS server on the same
host. The client also uses one more bit of data per byte (base64) in
upstream data, if accepted by the relay.

[032] - MIN 2009w04
by Sampo Saaristo (http://freshmeat.net/users/zampo/)
Fri, Jan 23rd 2009 13:50
Software Development :: Testing
About: MIN is an advanced unit/integration test framework for Maemo/Linux.
It supports test cases written in C (or C++) as well as scripted test cases
with (a tailor made) MIN scripter, Lua, or Python. Test cases are compiled
into test modules that are loaded dynamically. A test case is executed in a
separate process.
Changes: This release reduces cyclomatic code complexity for the Engine
component, makes logging go to syslog instead of /tmp by default, and
changes the min-tests package installation directories. It fixes a bug in
scripter result reporting, memory leaks in debug macros, a problem with
logging crashing when there were no write permissions, a problem with
printing long lines from a scripter, Python asynchronous execution in ARM,
and the automake rules.

About: SQL Construction Kit aims to provide a simple builder/factory
pattern based approach to generating DML SQL for all popular RDBMS systems.
Included builders are SelectBuilder, InsertBuilder, UpdateBuilder, and
DeleteBuilder. It is much lighter weight than any of the ORM tools

been in production use since 2001 (updated to use features of Java 6). Also
included is a Facade patterned Database object that wraps a Datasource
object. This provides an execution framework for the results of the Builder
objects, which includes simplified transaction and batch management as well
as the ability to transparently handle SQL exceptions in a default manner.
The Database object also provides a simple object-oriented approach via
wrappers around the database metadata.

About: wv2ogg is a tool that uses wvunpack, oggenc, and vorbiscomment to
encode wavpack files to Ogg Vorbis files. The quality setting that will be
used for encoding the Vorbis files can be set when running wv2ogg. It will
also transfer all tags and replaygain information from the wavpack files to
the Ogg Vorbis files by default. wv2ogg was written because no other
software that would do this existed for Linux.
