                       Caldera Systems, Inc. Security Advisory

Subject: remote root exploit in ntpd
    Advisory number: CSSA-2001-013.0
    Issue date: 2001 April, 6
    Cross reference:
    ______________________________________________________________________________

    1. Problem Description

The ntp time synchronisation demon has a buffer overflow in its
control request parsing which allows any remote attacker to gain
root access, if the demon is running.

Caldera Systems is shipping this demon disabled by default, but
we urge our customers to either deinstall or upgrade the package.

    2. Vulnerable Versions

       System Package
       -----------------------------------------------------------
OpenLinux 2.3 All packages previous to
                                       xntp-3.5.93e-5

OpenLinux eServer 2.3.1 All packages previous to
       and OpenLinux eBuilder xntp-3.5.93e-5

OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4 All packages previous to
                                       xntp-4.0.97-2

    3. Solution

       Workaround

Stop the demon and deinstall the xntp package by using:
            /etc/rc.d/init.d/ntp stop
            rpm -e xntp

The proper solution is to upgrade to the latest packages.
