Mainly management types take the CISSP test, of course that does not mean
you can not stay in the trenches. Not all CCIE's become managers when they
finish the test and the CCIE is one of the most, if not the most, demanding
test out there. I have seen doctorate level people fail this test. Looking
at the CISSP study guide, it appears to be the next most difficult test
there is.
Of course, that all depends on how you think and study.

So, with that statement, would the CISSP be a valid alternative to an
academic background? Is the CISSP the missing link from techie to manager?
What about the other way around?

I agree with you. My experience has told me that a majority of the people
taking the CISSP exam are looking to move OUT of the trenches and into
management at some level.
Your mileage may vary.
