One other reason for a 4 year degree that may become more important in the
slowing economy...when the company has to "downsize", they are usually going to
use some sort of grading system to pare the ranks. You may be technically very
competent but if you don't look good on paper, it's going to be harder for the
company to retain you over someone who has the degree but in reality isn't as
skilled(especially in the US). Four year degrees are usually worth a lot more
points than professional qualifications. We all like to think we're too valuable
to be let go..but look at yourself from the viewpoint of someone in HR.
