I just completed my GSEC a couple of days ago. It seems to be structured
along the same lines of the CISSP - multiple areas of knowledge required to
pass the exam. I don't think the GSEC is as wide and shallow as the CISSP
but it certainly is technical. There is also a practical that must be
completed before you can take the final exam. My practical was a 10 page
paper on Intrusion Detection.
I have heard people say the GSEC is for the down in the dirt engineer and
the CISSP is the 500 foot view - technical versus theory - hands-on versus
consulting, etc. My goal is to get both!! : ) I have just started reading
the CISSP Prep Guide and have spent many hours browsing over the CISSP OSG
(www.cccure.org).
GSEC: 75 questions, 2 hours plus a practical
CISSP: 250 questions, 6 hours
Hope this helps!
