Is there any attempt to define what they mean by "hacker" ahead of this
question? When I wrote a distributed kernel that implemented Bell-LaPadula
for a network (published in DECUS 11-SP-6 way back when) I and a number
of my colleagues described it as good kernel hacking, a good hack, etc.
etc., and also described some of the address mapping tricks it used
in the same way. Many many others who've been in the business awhile
have also described their works, and especially where their works caused
a system to do something its original design did not allow, as good
    hacks.

I won't go into my high school experiences, where the word "hack" was
    commonly
used but had nothing to do with computing.

If there is no such definition, it would seem useless.

So I guess this implies that if you've ever been to DefCon or one of the
other many "Hacker" cons, you probably will need to explain why it was
    that you were there...

I guess my situation is even worse though, as I have given presentations
at "hacker" cons (anyone who is in security and hasn't is missing out on
a GREAT resource for learning more about security as well as making
contacts with other security professionals)...which means I have in fact
been publicly identified with hackers and hacking...
