The Dallas chip that R. Oden refers to is an integrated
circuit made by Dallas Semiconductor. They sell them to all
comers ( even by ones via credit card). They have had a
developers kit available which had samples of several different
configurations and a reader which plugs into a PC port.
Each chip has a unique fartory etched serial number, some have
additional memory and other features.
They are easy to read and write from a PC, and they have a lot
of cute configurations ( keyfobs,etc).
