It started back in the mid-80's when Microsoft came up with
the allegedly innovative approach of having fresh-from-college
punks write new code as a first job, not do maintenance. Thus,
they never learned from anyone else's mistake, and they've been
travelling forward with those bad habits ever since. People like Dave
are, in effect, doing software maintenance and troubleshooting
as it used to be defined.
