Ive had a lot of dealings with both companies so I guess ill say my two
peso's worth (Checkpoint not so much lately)

To answer your Q, I guess a few of things.

Marty is now more loaded then he was (on paper) and fair play, he's done
well and deserves it ;)

Checkpoint, historically, has been very selective and (i can only guess)
against buying other companies/tech. Its easy to assume they do it pretty
much to enhance massive gaps in their tech portfolio (which isn't anything
new). In the traditional sense of Firewalls, they can't improve their fw-1
product that much more and nor can anyone else for that matter thus need to
branch out or else market share and revenue will steadily decline (possibly
has already thus instigating this purchase). Where that particular part of
the industry is leading towards is "application intelligence" to coin
someone's term...... Now they have intellectual property of something that
understand apps/networks more than what they had (however is still not
perfect unlike something such as Kate Moss). Drugs, 3-somes....However I
digress.

So together they can improve their IPS firewalling et al which both needs
improving IMHO. IDS and monitoring (RNA style) is something different from
what CP have ever done.

However the interesting part, I think, will be where RNA will take
Checkpoint. A dynamically controlled enterprise/network/app aware IPS/FW at
infrastructure/client sounds like a cool thing to me as long as the
foundations are solid..... RNA is an innovative piece of tech as we know.

As for the whole open source thing, does it not seem that once things get to
some sort of critical mass that the whole "open source" thing fades a little
and the executive board starts to take over?. Call me a cynic however it
does seem like a trend (all be it somewhat slow such as Nessus and snort
rules for example). Im not sure what will happen specifically, however
surely with such a large user base of open source Snort!, closing the code
would bring a large backlash in the industry which is a complete opposite of
the Sourcefire paradigm now which has, to some degree, made it the company
that it is. Something that the bean counters surely are aware of. And
hell, free developers are free developers?. Even better than off-shoring :)

I guess Sourcefire will breathe some fresh innovation and life into
Checkpoint which from my experience [Checkpoint] seemed to be somewhat
stagnant in recent years. Firewall this, remote access that.... yada yada
yada - everyone can do it anyway no? and much cheaper.

But who really knows anyway...

So I know its not heap overflows, shared sections and stuff but what about
the Yellow Suit's buying Bindview (to stay on the topic of world
domination). A little bird told me that Bindview were getting some clients
that the Yellow's were bidding against and thought "hell, we'll just buy
'em" Gillette and Nestle style.

I don't think it was in the song, sadly.
