Thieves stole laptop computers containing the names and Social Security
numbers of every registered voter in the city from election commission
offices over the Christmas holiday, authorities said Friday.

The computers also contain voters' addresses and phone numbers, Election
Commissioner Ray Barrett said.

The commission intends to send notices to the more than 337,000 registered
voters in the city informing them of the theft.

Voters are warned to monitor their bank accounts for suspicious activity.

Barrett says he has asked the county's computer specialists to make changes
to the system to safeguard against any future problems.
