State Police arrested a Shenendehowa sophomore for identity theft after he
allegedly accessed the personal data of some 250 transportation employees
due to a school district error.
The 15-year-old, not identified by police or the school district, was
arrested Thursday and charged with multiple felonies: computer
trespassing, unlawful possession of personal identification information
and identity theft.
He will appear before Saratoga County Family Court at a later date, State
Police said today. His juvenile status likely would prevent him from
serving time in jail if convicted, police said.
Due to a school district error in configuring information on a new
computer server, the student was able to use his student password to
access an employee domain and 250 names of past and present Shen
transportation employees, their Social Security numbers, driver's license
numbers and more, Shenendehowa spokeswoman Kelly DeFeciani said. She did
not say who made the technological blunder that allowed the student to tap
into private information.
