MANCHESTER, N.H. -- New Hampshire consumers are being urged to check
credit card statements after one of the biggest security breaches on
record.
January 22, 2009
Credit card numbers were stolen from Heartland Payment Systems, a
company that processes about 100 million transactions per month. On
Thursday, an e-mail went out to hundreds of New Hampshire restaurants,
saying that the breach could be the result of global cyber fraud.
Heartland Payment Systems processes credit and debit card payments for
175,000 businesses across the country. Those in New Hampshire haven't
been revealed, but the notices went out to 700 Granite State
restaurants.
"Heartland is encouraging us to do this," said Mike Somers of the New
Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association. "They are being
proactive. They discovered it themselves. They're trying to get all
the information out there to be transparent."
Somers said restaurants who use Heartland may start getting questions
from customers, who were advised to go to Heartland's new Web site to
find out the latest information and to keep an eye on their credit
card statements.
Jerry Little, of the New Hampshire Bankers Association said banks and
credit unions are just starting to get word that their customers'
cards were compromised.
"We've had calls from banks in New Hampshire that are telling us
they've had notices from Visa or MasterCard that they're on the list
and have a number of cards that have been breached," Little said.
