An investigation into a breach of computer security at Eastern Illinois
University has not yet determined if personal data was stolen from a list
of about 9,000 people, a university official said Friday.
Eastern has mailed letters to 9,000 former, prospective and current
undergraduate students regarding the breach of files that contain personal
information. The university has created a Web page with information about
the breach of the admissions computer server and answers to frequently
asked questions. It may be viewed at http://www.eiu.edu/notice.
"A machine was compromised by a virus so we don't believe it was a
targeted attack against the university data system," said Adam Dodge,
assistant director of information security for Eastern Information
Technology Services.
