    When "rate" is set to "auto", it changes transmission rate automatically
    according to signal strength. (As you may know, ) the rate depends on
    modulation type.
     11M, 5.5M --- CCK
     2M --- QPSK
     1M --- BPSK

    So, if you want to do stable measurement, first, you should set "rate" to
    constant value (for example, 11M).

    I also have difficulty in the measurement in ad-hoc mode.
    Since aironet card uses Intersil chip, it may be good to ask
    from following page.
