The Wavelan-IEEE include diversity antenna. Actually, these
are the most impressive antennas I've ever seen on a Pcmcia card (and
are similar to those on the first gen Wavelan). They are two L shaped
sheet of metal at 90 degrees, approx 1.5 cm large, raised above the
PCB, at each corner of the card. Actually, that's why the black cover
of the card is thicker at the end, to house the two antennas and the
connector.
The other cards we've open had a antenna direct on the PCB (as
a large trace). Never opened an Aironet, though...
On the other hand, you are right, there is only one external
connector on the Wavelan-IEEE card.
By the way, on my Pcmcia Aironet card (340), the antennas are
definitely *NOT* removable and there is no connector. But it seems
that there is two version of the Pcmcia card (quite confusing).
