I work for a company that is trying to develop Linux-based bridges
(APs) to replace the 802.11 APs that we currently use. I played with the
802.11 cards from YDI along with the linux-wlan driver about a year ago so
I'm somewhat familiar with how the wlan driver works. Before I start
ordering stuff, I wanted to get a few questions answered.

First off, I remember the 802.11 cards had the ability to create a BSS and
then others could join that BSS without the need for a machine with the
IS_AP option set. I'm fairly certain that this was available in
infrastructure mode. Is this still possible with the 802.11b cards using
the linux-wlan-ng driver or is this only possible with the ever-elusive AP
firmware I've been reading so much about?

I'm also not quite clear on what the AP firmware does. It says somewhere
on Intersil's website that it offloads certain bridging functions to the
card. Is it possible to accomplish the same result with just using the
    Linux bridging code?

    Thanks in advance,
